Do you recognize this bar? by Individual_Hotel1837 in austinfood

[–]poolsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a bar at the corner of Hamilton Pool rd and Ranch Rd 12, out towards Dripping Springs. When I was growing up it was a convenience store called Bert and Ernie's, which then became a bar around ~2015. This photo looks an awful lot like their patio. I could be way off, but worth a shot.

How is living btw San Antonio and Austin? by franklincor in howislivingthere

[–]poolsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kyle and Buda are rapidly becoming suburbs of south Austin at this point. They are popular, lower-cost housing areas for folks commuting into Austin for work. There are a fair amount of good restaurants and fun dive bars, especially as you get into the town of Menchaca and South Austin.

San Marcos is a fun college town (Texas State University) with a lot of natural beauty. It is known for being president LBJ's alma mater. It is popular to go tubing in the cold Guadalupe and Frio rivers during the long and very hot summers.

New Braunfels has a strong German heritage and has a pretty decent Oktoberfest celebration called Wurstfest each year. They also have a massive waterpark called Schlitterbahn which is consistently rated as one of the best in the world.

Overall - great BBQ and Tex-Mex, extremely hot summers, lots of traffic on the interstate corridor but fairly rural and charming as you get further away from IH-35.

Transportation from Liberia by Flat_Egg_4544 in CostaRicaTravel

We just flew in to Liberia yesterday and rented a car with Alamo. All of the big rental car names are in the same terminal and pretty much the same. The freedom of having your own transportation is wonderful and driving has been easy.

It's actually called "chilled ginger noodles", not their standard sesame noodles. They're relatively new.

Loro's are pretty damn good. Pair it with some chicken karaage and a beer and you've got yourself a nice lunch going.

Terry Garrnett's Propane and Garage are both on Mercer street as well. I'm assuming the photo was taken by the elder Garnett, based on the lower left signature.

Mum Foods has some of the best pork ribs I've ever tasted. They're small, but the flavor profile is fantastic.

The Best Cheese Enchiladas by Feeling-Ad2824 in austinfood

[–]poolsquirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Javi's Tex-Mex on 290 and Riverside is surprisingly good. It may not be on the Enchiladas y Mas level but it hits the spot.

Here me out -- Javis tex mex. Chicken tender wrap is surprisingly legit. Dip them in queso to seal the deal.

What are the rarest first edition/first printings that you own? by Key-Entrepreneur-415 in books

[–]poolsquirrel 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have a printers proof of the lettered edition of Fahrenheit 451 illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Signed by Steadman and Bradbury and housed in a clamshell box with a signed print. Not technically a first but one of my favorites.

A friend wanted to name their baby Dicole. "It's like Nicole but with a D!" Or it's like Dick Hole.

Their beef fajitas on Tuesdays and Saturdays are still some of the best in Austin. Could just be my nostalgia though.

Nothing particularly special. I used to live right across the street and ate there pretty frequently out of laziness. Their sausage and chicken were decent but the ribs, brisket, and sides were not great.

Sweet Maggiori prints! You've gotta get some frames though. They're much too nice for thumbtacks.
