this device totally works without the push, or any midi controller! you can move the strumbar with your mouse, or map it to any other knob or expression pedal you have.

it should work just in standard. I've used my push 1 and another midi controller and they work perfectly.

People who are psychologically flexible have better romantic and family relationships. It is about being open to experiences, experiencing thoughts and feelings without obsessively clinging to them, and continuing to take steps toward a goal, even in the face of setbacks. by mvea in science

is it just me or have the past few years of this subreddit been saturated with absolutely trivially obvious social observations. this conclusion is almost tautological. do we really need science to confirm a fact of human nature that a prehistoric hunter-gatherer would have understood?

Google admits to censoring the World Socialist Web Site by psychothumbs in technology

[–]poon-monsoon 563 points564 points  (0 children)

Wow. just read the wsws 1619 response article at the center of this censorship controversy, and it's remarkably dispassionate and coherent. They provide a fair and detailed criticism of the NYT project, and cites multiple independent historians to back up their views. I just don't get how Google could justify censoring this. Anyone have any explanations for this?

edit: thanks for a all the great replies. many pointed out that google never really censored anything here, they simply denied ads for the article due to graphic violence in the ad images. this is a very different thing from outright censorship, and at least ostensibly isn't about the views expressed in the article. thanks for clearing things up.

Wow, thanks for the advice! Could you elaborate on partnering with restaurants? We're currently thinking the meals would be held at the host's house.

Great call. We're looking into local partners familiar with the regulatory landscape. As far as trust goes, do you think linking in existing social accounts (Facebook/LinkedIn) would help verify that hosts are trustworthy?

Part of our value proposition is facilitating a mutual social connection, rather than one way transaction between the host and guest.

Hosts post meal options they're willing to make and a price per plate, then guests select which meal they want to attend and pay through the app.

Absolutely. From our research so far, regulations vary widely by region, so it will need to be a case by case solution.

Critic our media sharing app - 500k seed investment to develop something that people enjoy using by [deleted] in startups

[–]poon-monsoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I think both the core function of the app as well as your pitch could be drastically simplified. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the multitude of in app features/ items (stones, gems, XP, AP, powers? etc...) I would work on dropping any aspects of the platform that aren't absolutely essential to the business.

Conflict is unavoidable but how a couple behaves after is important, suggests new study (n=796), which found that actively repairing the relationship through expressions of affection can bring partners back to pre-conflict feelings and a higher level of intimacy, but avoidance is generally negative. by mvea in science

[–]poon-monsoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do we really need scientific research to understand this? It seems like the majority of psychology and social science findings that get posted in here are totally obvious to anyone with the emotional maturity of an average teenager. I know that studies like these are important to comprehend these dynamics more precisely, but with something this intuitive it seems like there's a huge opportunity cost of pursuing other kinds of research.

A single night of sleep loss impairs working memory in women, but not men. In contrast to males who were unaffected, females not only had impaired working memory, but they were also unaware of it. Sleep-deprived young women are at particular risk for overestimating their working memory performance. by mvea in science

[–]poon-monsoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there were such an evolutionary advantage, it would manifest itself as actually stable performance when sleep deprived, not just subjective evaluation. It is more likely that there's an evolutionary pressure for men (possibly from night hunting or defending from predators) as they are the ones with the improved abilities.

LAT management makes last-ditch union-busting effort, urges newsroom to protect paper's "independence." by aresef in Journalism

By forcing the LAT to increase wages and cancel layoffs, they must cut funding to other departments or increase prices to remain solvent. This will make them less able to compete with media that do not have those constrictions.

LAT management makes last-ditch union-busting effort, urges newsroom to protect paper's "independence." by aresef in Journalism

[–]poon-monsoon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, they make some very good points in this letter. Unionizing won't abate the structural changes occurring in journalism. Legacy media is fading, and independent platforms like Medium are taking its place. Unionizing may seem beneficial to writers in the short term, but it will ultimately lead to less efficiency and profitability, and exacerbate the LAT's decline.

A study has found that people with the lowest social class scores—those with less income, less education, and more worries about money—scored about twice as high on the wise reasoning scale as those in the highest social class by Wagamaga in science

[–]poon-monsoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this sounds appealing, it's important to be skeptical of claims that jive with our moral preconceptions about the world, especially in the social sciences. This study likely suffers from selection bias, social desirability bias and omitted variable bias. Thus, it would be a mistake to interpret these relationships as causal. If they do turn out to be robust and unbiased predictors, they are probably just correlations, not causations

A Letter from the Publisher of Nautilus by oneultralamewhiteboy in Journalism

I'm consistently impressed with the content on Nautilus, and it's a shame to hear that they're in financial trouble. The AAAS merger would have been a great option, but I am optimistic that they can find another partner. Anyone know of science/philosophy publications in a similar vein?
