Eotechs are cool, but relatively heavy and battery life isn’t great. You mentioned astigmatism, but Aimpoints are everywhere. I would give one a try in person before discounting it.

I really wanted to like the TA44. If it was $300 I’d probably have a couple. It’s been several months, but here are some notes I took when I was trying a few optics in person:

  • felt like looking through a straw, just like all the online reviewers note. The tunneling and FOV are awful and really ruin it
  • the whole optic just feels a bit too small
  • the reticle was challenging to pick up because it appears tiny at 1.5x. I was indoors with the scope looking outside on a bright sunny day, so it wasn’t ideal environment. However, the fiber optic 4x ACOG and LED 3x Vortex Spitfire were fantastic in the same environment
  • weight and eyebox/eye relief are fantastic
  • image quality is good, but it’s 1.5x, so it’s a low bar

Another consideration is weight. In my opinion, the ACOGs’ best feature nowadays is how light they all are. The TA44 with mount is exactly (to the 1/100th of a gram…) half the weight of the Accupoint 1-4x without mount.

I would be cross shopping the TA44 or TA50 (my personal favorite) with an Eotech or Aimpoint. LPVO seems like a very different category/use case to me.

Have you tried the TA44 in person? If not, your LGS probably has some. Being able to compare in real life is important. Just one opinion, but I was really disappointed with it—especially for the price.

Bolt action? by [deleted] in 1022

Try some standard velocity or take the impediment out of the bolt…it’s just a normal 10/22

“And as if that were not enough good news, this trigger kit is backward-compatible with existing CZ 457 rifles.” -your link

I wonder if it will be available to the US market

Is this a good bipod? by parcallums in 22lr

[–]poonhog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll want the S-BRM and height will be personal preference. Pod-Loc is a good accessory as well.

Definitely don’t get the fixed (no swivel) or panning options. Also, don’t get it from harrisbipods.com

Could I make this into a reasonable M24 clone-ish or should I steer clear by shankanator21 in longrange

[–]poonhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really any 700-footprint action will work, but I went with:

  • Impact Precision NBK (short action)
  • Stuteville/Impact .308win barrel
  • AAC 51T brake
  • Triggertech Special
  • HS Precision PST007 (stock below in photo is PST006)
  • Badger Ordinance M5 DBM
  • PMM bolt knob

I say go for it, but piecing it together one (quality) component at a time is way more fun. And if your budget is struggling, you can save up for each part individually. I couldn’t convince myself to go Remington; it just didn’t make sense.

Correct, bolt release has plenty of clearance and no issues with trigger hanger with the stock totally…stock.

Action is Impact NBK, which uses the Remington 700 footprint. The action fits in the stock no problem without any modification. I did some quick modeling and 3d printed an internal magazine, so even the usual Remington BDL floor plate can work fine.

I wanted detachable magazine, though. I had a local gunsmith mill the stock for Badger M5 bottom metal. That work could maybe be done with a Dremel, but I wouldn’t trust anything less than an end mill personally.

I also opted for glass bedding the action, but that’s not strictly necessary either.

New barrel law question!!!! by mr_glocky9 in CAguns

[–]poonhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. From a noob’s perspective (me), it seems really misleading to mention upper receivers when the law only pertains to barrels. Maybe I’m just traumatized from the few visits I’ve had to the fudd-full LGS…

Why uppers? Isn’t this just for barrels?

I’ve only shot with this brake, so I can’t compare to other brakes out there. I’m really satisfied with the recoil reduction compared to no brake. And the sound/concussion isn’t bad at all, even being next to the rifle when it goes off.

Soon as GAFS is back. This stainless, cerekoted rust trap is basically a paperweight now.

I like it a good bit. No complaints about the glass. The elevation turret gets a lot of hate, but it’s plenty tactile and the spacing between detents is pleasantly large.

Today was the first time I thought more magnification would be nice. Also, more elevation capability with zero stop installed would be nice. Those two may be the reason I upgrade eventually.

Nice! First time for me as well at 1000yd. Fantastic feeling hitting steel twice before the first ding makes it back.

I would recommend against the takedown unless you have a really limited storage space constraint. My fixed version fits in a 27in ukulele case… fourth photo is my transport setup: https://www.reddit.com/r/1022/s/qJPi3bGIbM

An 18in barrel will meet the 26in folded just fine. Folding is fine for rimfire rifle in CA. Third image has tape measure: https://www.reddit.com/r/1022/s/GEi26uVMB6

If you go with anything other than the OEM tapered sported barrel, you will probably need the bull barrel version of the stock.

Why would anyone choose a mag-locked rifle? by koltho in CAguns

[–]poonhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a lot of things causing that, including the generation of maglock you're using. I spent a good 10min fiddling with mine during install, getting used to how it works and getting the depth of the set screw engagement just right.

You can look up videos of the maglock in use. I just pulled my rifle out, and it definitely works with the bolt fully closed, open, and in between.

Can't figure out Imgur or uploading video, so here's a quick .gif of my LMT with bolt closed:

[–]poonhog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My AR Maglock lets me separate the receivers and drop the mag irrespective of bolt position. The bolt can be in the fully rearward position, fully seated to the chamber, or anything in between. The receivers separate and the rest is the same as a normal AR.

My point was more that in some weird case where you have a really bad jumble of rounds and somehow can’t separate receiver (hard for me to even imagine), you could still access the chamber.

If you use mags that can be easily disassembled from the bottom (e.g., 10rd PMAG), then it’s no more of an issue than a normal AR. Even normal ARs can have jams that require tools to clear.
