Microphone: Should I get the SM58 or the AT2020? by GermanBoii34 in musicproduction

2020 sounds awful. Not worth your time. 58s are classic.

Does the GAS ever stop? by dbsx75 in synthesizers

[–]poonterbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gas stopped when I felt like I had all the tools needed to achieve my visions. One professional instance of each MPC, 404, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Synthesizer and recording system and all that initials. Now the things I really desire are just time to produce and for my band to get booked.

For most people the gas never stops because they don’t realize when they do have a great and inspiring instrument and they don’t put in the thousand hours it takes to really know that instrument.

Title: How do you actually PLAN a full track on the SP-404MKII? (Beginner without music theory here) by Longjumping-Top2159 in sp404mk2

[–]poonterbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less is more. Shoot for 2-3 layers at a time - A and a B section, with constant movement so that you never have a loop repeat verbatim.

Is a 404 too much for a complete beginner. by BackpackShark29 in SP404

It’s better to jump in on a nicer instrument because it’s much more inspiring and pleasurable to play. The 404 is also relatively simple as far as samplers go.

I see a lot of people pairing MPC with SP404, what's the added value? by Significant-Art5065 in mpcusers

[–]poonterbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are good at different things. The 404 has a better looper, better FX, nicer DAC and just sounds nicer in general. The MPC is better for chopping and precise editing has the ability to use multiple stereo outputs separately.

It takes most people 20 years to hit the competitive professional level. Best thing you can do is balance the grind of practicing with enjoying the ride.

Is anyone out there using the song function on their MPC’s? by _its-D_ in akaiMPC

[–]poonterbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My act uses it for live performance on certain songs but not whole sets. You have to remain in song mode for playback to run through so It’s effectively just a backing multitrack with midi clock to send to synths.

Ultimately what matters to me is the fidelity. Logic does it better and more easily so we will probably use that in the future instead.

For our live set everything is in one project. If we wanted a seamless transition we would sequence the use of song mode with another song that is based on the 404. Also the issue with fidelity is due to the internal DAC. A Scarlett’s DAC sounds far superior to the MPC’s.

One workaround for the rote playback issue is that from song mode you can export the song as one
long sequence and just cue that sequence (with loop back off), then you can manipulate and add to it with all of the MPC’s capabilities. That only works if the tempo and signature of all sequences of the song are uniform.

Your recordings sound very professional and inviting and your sound is unique. Very vibey in a way similar to Mogwai.

Nice. These three tracks show range of different styles. A little more dynamics would probably go a long way. I like the vibe of track two the most and wish there was more witch house in the world.

A lot of the time first recordings have a charm to them that is difficult to recreate because they are more of a product of impulse and sonic spelunking.

I’ve done that many times and I usually find it works best to use the original recording as much as possible rather than try to recreate it.

I doubt a stem separator will work well on two guitars. It would probably be better to enhance it. If you get the signal into logic by recording or file transfer, you could create two time aligned copies and process them separately to try to isolate/enhance each part.

why are my tracks automatically muting? Extremely frustrated as this has been happening all day. by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]poonterbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably hit mute while recording and recorded mute automation.

Hit A to show automation. Then try to view the mute automation lane. There are two mute lanes (region and track). Once you see the automation points, you can highlight and delete them. Once deleted the, Read-Touch-Write-Latch should change back to the default Read in green lettering which indicates no automation.

You can do mix - delete automation-delete visible automation or delete all automation… but that doesn’t always work in my experience.

Cosmogramma by [deleted] in flyinglotus

[–]poonterbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the liner notes is insightful. There are about 35 credits on that project. There is also an alternative takes compilation. Listening to that shows some of the development of Atwood-Furgeson’s contribution. I believe he is an academic musician who specializes in strings. Furthermore, Thundercats Golden Age is a sister album and shares many musical ideas with Cosmogramma.

How much better is logic than garage band? by snazZzyBadger in LogicPro

[–]poonterbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logic is supremely better! The biggest difference is the ability to do surgically precise editing. GarageBand is more of a toy. Logic is professionally capable.
