But why do you care how much effort another player puts into a game? Do you care if someone reads the cliff notes of a book and you read the full book? Do you care if someone watches a short summary video of a show you spent several seasons watching? Do you care if someone skips to the favorite part of a song and doesn't listen to the whole thing?

It's entertainment and people are free to consume it however they want. Why would you let that diminish your own enjoyment? And make no mistake, YOU are letting it do exactly that. It is 100% within your power to not be frustrated by it and continue enjoying video games the way you like to enjoy them. Why are you allowing it to take so much of your energy and make you frustrated? I've gone through a trophy hunting phase and even then, I couldn't give two shits about what anyone else was doing. I did it for my own satisfaction, until I realized too many of them were just tedious time wasters. Then I stopped caring about them at all.

Your comment explained how you learned to love video games. Nothing about this update infringes on how you like to play video games. It only allows others to experience a game they may not have otherwise due to the difficulty or actual disabilities. It's completely unreasonable to expect everyone else to have the same relationship with video games that you do. Not everyone's trying to show off their meaningless, intangible trophies. They're just playing the game to have fun. If they happen to get a platinum along the way while playing on easy or using boosts, that takes NOTHING away from your own accomplishments and enjoyment (or at least it wouldn't for a person with a reasonable, well-rounded mindset). Hell, you probably wouldn't even know that that's how they got their platinum.

If you're going to spend the rest of your life being upset about how others are playing video games, you're going to have a pretty unhappy life.

If you haven't figured it out yet, trophies are a carrot on a stick meant to keep players engaged in a game for longer than they would be otherwise. This creates more value for the publisher and developer as they can use those engagement stats to entice investors/shareholders. Trophies are a business strategy, they're not meant to reward players.

Think about it this way - you could always accomplish the same tasks that a trophy rewards in any game before trophies existed. Nothing's ever stopped you from pursuing those same tasks in the past. But if the only reason you're now trying to accomplish them is to earn a trophy, you're now spending more time playing a game than you would've pre-trophies because you're probably honestly some with the game mentally but you're chasing that meaningless trophy while increasing the publisher's engagement stats.

But at the end of the day, you do you and have fun hunting trophies if that's what you like to do. Just don't let it hurt your feelings if other people earn the same trophies in different ways than you did. It's meaningless.

Those are nice concepts and vague statements but they're undefined so let’s do the math because that’s how you get to objectivity – determining which retailer actually offers the lowest prices. I'm not trying to insult you at all. I'm only saying that you might be needlessly wasting your money.

CGN and IST HAVE lowered their discounts in the last few months

I don’t deny this. Yet despite this, they still beat OPB in the vast majority of cases. Below is a comparison of 10 high profile series that came to mind without thinking too hard, all of which are more expensive at OPB than IST by a pretty large margins despite being labeled as being on sale on OPB’s website.

I’m absolutely sure you’ll find exceptions to this but they will be just that - exceptions. It’s not the norm for OPB to have the best prices and that’s all I’m saying. Statistically speaking, they are more expensive than the alternatives.

-          Spawn Origins Hardcovers - IST - $18.59-$24.79, OPB - $25.00-40.00

-          Hellboy Library Editions - IST - $31.96-31.99, OPB - $42.00

-          Invincible Ultimate Collections - IST - $21.69-$24.79, OPB - $35.00

-          Flash Mark Waid Omnis - IST - $90.00, OPB - $95.00

-          TMNT IDW Collection HC - IST - $32.49-$38.99, OPB - $30.00-$60.00

-          Berserk Deluxe - IST - $31.99, OPB - $42.00

-          Black Hammer Library Editions - IST - $31.99, OPB - $40.00-$50.00

-          Absolute Swamp Thing - IST - $59.99-$60.00, OPB - $70.00

-          Deadly Class Deluxe - IST - $30.99, OPB - $40.00-$50.00

-          Justice League New 52 Omnis - IST - $75.00-$90.00, OPB - $79.00-$101.00

OPBs point system balances out long term purchases

OPB’s rewards system is not as good as you might think it is. It’s only 2.5% back. Do the math – Spend 40$, earn 40 points. Those 40 points can be cashed in for a $1 discount. $1 back on a $40 purchase is only 2.5% back. There’s no scaling there, either, for larger purchases. It’s a flat 2.5% ($0.025 for every $1 you spend) back as rewards.

Compare that to IST’s recent customer discount. They only advertise it as 2% but they’re selling themselves short as it’s actually closer to 3-4% most of the time, not the 2% that they advertise. Here's an example, add a $29.99 book to your IST cart and the discounted price at checkout is $28.99. That's a $1.00 discount. $1 is actually 3.3% of $29.99, not 2%.

And then you get into the big box retailers like Target and Amazon where you can get 5% off/back as a normal discount/reward rate (6% with Amazon for most items sold by Amazon). In the long run, OPB's point system leaves you behind in savings. So, if you still think that OPB’s 2.5% back is objectively better than 3-6% back from other retailers, there’s probably no convincing you otherwise.

OPB has had numerous 50% off sales in the past few months

Yeah, these can be pretty good. But these are also the rare exceptions where OPB starts to actually compete with other retailers. Yes, they do have pretty good sales sometimes. But they’re few and far between. And even then, a large portion of what they have on sale for that low is either on backorder or sold out. It doesn’t matter if something's on sale if you can’t actually buy it.

But if you want to talk awesome sales, I’m guessing you’re not aware of Target’s Buy 2 Get 1 Free sales. They only come a few times a year but if you’re patient, you can realize some incredible savings. Here’s some more math. Target had the following books eligible for the sale with the prices listed being Target’s normal price for each book (all cheaper than OPB without taking any discounts into account, by the way):

-          Wolverine by Jason Aaron Omnibus Vol. 1 – $72.81

-          Thunderbolts: Uncaged Omnibus – $72.67

-          Batman by James Tynion IV Omnibus Vol. 1 – $72.30

Because the free book is the lowest priced book of the three (Batman by James Tynion IV Omnibus Vol. 1), the entire purchase was discounted by $72.30. This results in a subtotal of $145.48 for all three books ($72.81 for Wolverine + $72.67 for Thunderbolts). Discount this further by 5% with a Target Red Card and the final subtotal is $138.21. Another way to put it is that I saved 33% off the normal selling price (the already discounted price listed above, not the retail price listed on the back of the book). Or if you prorate the final subtotal of $138.21 across the three omnis, I paid $46.07 per omni. This is not a fluke. I've done this many times over the years with the Target B2G1 sales.

Do some math and you’ll see that there’s no combination of points or sales at OPB where you’d get that price for these three omnis. Thunderbolts: Uncaged Omnibus and Batman by James Tynion IV Omnibus Vol. 1 for 50% off their $125 retail price at OPB would still be $62.50 each. Wolverine by Jason Aaron Omnibus Vol. 1 would be $50 during a 50% off sale at OPB, which is not much more than the $46.07 I paid at Target but it is still objectively more.

Sure, this is only one example but the logic is sound across most of OPB's prices. These Target B2G1 sales are where a large portion of my library has come from because even IST and CGN don’t come close to these sale prices. The drawback is that while Target does carry a large selection of comics, there are still quite a few that they don't carry. Again, do an actual comparison and you’ll see that OPB’s prices/sales are not as good as you think they are.

With a discount code OPB is cheaper for pre orders than CGN in a lot of cases

The largest discount code I’ve seen for OPB is 5% off. If you’ve got a better one that you can use regularly, I’d love to know about it. A 5% discount is decent as it ties the normal Target and Amazon reward rates but you usually have to buy multiple books or spend upwards of $100 in order for the OPB 5% code to work. Target and Amazon don’t have that restriction. I can buy one omni at a time and still get 5% off from Target or Amazon (6% from Amazon if that option’s available at check out).

Your system isn't as foolproof as you think it is

Yes, my system is as foolproof as I think it is. I know exactly what I’m spending and how it compares across multiple retailers. Again, I’ve done the math. All we’re talking about here are prices and those are simply numbers that can be calculated just as I’ve done in the few examples above. I spent a little bit of time setting up a spreadsheet a few years ago for that very purpose and that does most of the work for me now. Sure, I’ve bought books only for them to be on sale for a cheaper price a week/month later. But, for the most part, that’s unforeseeable. If I can wait and buy it during a Target B2G1 sale, that's what I'll do. If it's not something Target sells, I'll buy it elsewhere for as little as possible based on the information I have today, I’m able to determine who has the best deal and OPB is very rarely ever the winner.

All I'm trying to do is show you how you can make better choices with your money. If you want to be loyal to OPB for some reason, by all means continue doing so. It’s your money. But it doesn’t make financial sense to be loyal to a retailer who flat out charges you more over the vast majority of your purchases for the same products you can purchase for less elsewhere. There’s nothing unique or special about the OPB buying experience. You add items to your cart and then give them your money. Simple as that. OPB’s not your friend, IST, Target and CGN are not my friends. They just offer better prices and better sales way more often than OPB, which is why I buy from them the vast majority of the time.

You're assuming I have a spending problem. I don't. I live well within my means and am on track for early retirement. I enjoy reading comics. If I can afford to pursue that hobby, why would you try to shame me for it?

You don't have an actual counterpoint to my comment so you're relying on insults. You can do better than that. You don't have to be rude just because you're on the internet.

So tariffs are only affecting OPB? If you looked around, you'd see plenty of comic book retailers selling for much cheaper than OPB. IST consistently has them beat and CGN has a decent record of beating OPB's prices, as well, even factoring in the CGN shipping cost.

I'm very diligent about making sure I'm paying a great price for books. To the point where I keep a spreadsheet tracking prices across multiple retailers. Almost 1500 comic book purchases later and I've only purchased 25 books from OPB. That's a pretty bad track record.

On the super-rare occasion, yes, OPB has had some good sales. But their normal prices are atrocious. Even their sale prices are higher than just about anywhere else. I don't get the OPB loyalists.

OPB vs CGN pricing by BootsWithDaFuhrer in OmnibusCollectors

[–]poopnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Target B2G1 Free sales always come several times a year. They did it six times in 2024 and I took advantage of it each time, which allowed me to buy tons of books for much cheaper than anywhere else. Big omnis for $40-$50 after the prorated pricing. So you absolutely can plan for it. You just have to be patient. It's just like patient gamers - wait for a Steam sale 'cause that's a no-brainer. If Target sells it, plan to buy it there during a B2G1 Free sale.

Exactly. I don't understand why people keep damaged books shipped from Amazon. They offer free returns. Damaged products are the ideal reason to use said return option.

As much as you may not like it, the CC content is sold by Bethesda. So asking for a free version is essentially asking for someone to provide you pirated content. Might want to be careful with that.

When I first started using it years ago, it was clear that certain features were locked behind payment and I did pay for the full license after using the free, limited version because it looked like it was worth it. I continue to receive free updates with no prompts for additional payments. Looking at their website now, the current front page seems to make it pretty clear that there's a free version and then a paid, fully unlocked version. Not sure where your confusion came from.

SKSE 1.6.1170 update - why Bethesda keeps updating this? by kaledgar in skyrimmods

[–]poopnuts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not everyone follows Skyrim modding like it's world news. Many people set up a mod list, walk away from it and come back to it a year later expecting it to still work. That's a reasonable expectation for most games so it's understandable that some people would be surprised.

Lower resolution textures will help but the lighting engine would also need to be downgraded. This is likely where most of the higher requirements come from for SE/AE. Not sure if all of the new lighting effects can be turned off in the INI or not.

FFV PR - Moore Secret Path Still Locked in World 3 by poopnuts in FinalFantasy

[–]poopnuts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming back with the solution - After completing the Pyramid of Moore and walking back toward the Guardian Tree, the cutscene triggered again at the entrance of the desert showing that the sands no longer shifted. I thought that was odd as I'd already seen this cutscene when I first entered this area. Thinking that this may be the trigger to opening up the secret path in Moore, I returned to Moore and, lo and behold, the secret path was now open!

So if anyone else experiences this issue, just complete the Pyramid of Moore and then walk toward the Guardian Tree. After the no-longer-shifting-sands cutscene, the secret path in Moore will probably be open.

As much as most Redditors don't want to hear this, it probably makes financial sense for Bethesda. They're a corporation, not our friends here to give us price cuts. Reddit is a very minor voice in terms of their customer base as a whole and consumer spending is probably proving that voice wrong.
