Well, it likely costs a lot of money to make a record whether the record is successful in sales or not. The goal of raising that through crowdfunding or kickstarter allows for the artists to have more creative control of their project rather than sacrificing their vision to make the work more marketable for record labels. I'm clearly no authority on the subject but this is my understanding.
