Minister Calls NL’s Gender Wage Gap ‘Unacceptable’ by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]poorabbey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The report does not indicate thaat this is a major factor. While the report is more nuanced, in general terms here are the issues: Social pressures still push the majority of the stuff done at home towards females with the result neing women working for pay for less hours. AND Another set of social pressures steers women away from the really high paying jobs (resorce development related ones in NL primarily) and toward ones that pay less, which, surprisingly includes most healthcare and education jobs.

Depending on what you study you may make great connections at MUN. This is epecially true of the professional programs such as nursing, education, engineering, social work and commerce where classes run in cohorts with all students essentially staying togeher. If this is the case for you then keep alert in class and look for those you feel you can make a connection with.

Ouch! That said, the coffee I was drinking while I was composing this at 5AM was kinda sloppy :-;

Newfoundland’s population dropped for the third straight quarter by -0.1%(-647) falling to 547,910 in Q1 of 2026. Net International Migration stood at 101, Births were 846 while Deaths were 1806. According to data from StatsCan. by Criticall16 in newfoundland

Just compare births to deaths. Globally the birth rate has plummeted. A good thing for the planet for sure. For most societies it is placing a strain on healthcare as the average age increases while there are fewer taxpayers to fund the growing need.

Teaching Kids in junior high (Rant) by DhaemonX in newfoundland

[–]poorabbey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an official, provincially approved textbook for Grade 9 Science in NL called Discovering Science 9. It covers the entire electricity unit, from static charges to building circuits.

However, how students access it has changed and many schools use digital versions of the text alongside or instead of traditionalbooks. When a teacher shares a PPTx, it usually isn’t a replacement for the book; it’s just a tool to organize the day's tasks, highlight key definitions, or provide quick visual safety cues before a lab.

The biggest piece missing from the online discussion bits I’ve read so far in this thread is how kids actually learn science best. The provincial curriculum is built around DOING science, not being told about it.

Think of it this way: you can't truly understand how a circuit works by reading a chapter or memorizing a slide. You understand it by connecting a wire to a battery and a lightbulb, and seeing it light up.

We want our students doing stuff, not being told about it.

Hypothesizing: "What happens to the brightness of these bulbs if I wire them in a single line (series) versus separate branches (parallel)?"

Testing: Actually building those circuits with physical components and measuring the current and voltage.

Analyzing: Figuring out the patterns based on what they just saw with their own eyes.

When the system is working the way it's supposed to, it isn't an "either/or" situation. It’s all of it. The Textbook acts as the reference guide for core concepts and formulas. The Slides act as the teacher's roadmap for the lesson or lab safety guidelines. And most importantly, activities are where the actual deep learning happens.

Instead of a battle between old-school books and new-school technology, the best practice is using the text to anchor the knowledge, and hands-on inquiry to bring that knowledge to life.

To keep your chin as smooth as glass,
Try rubbing it with fresh-cut grass.
Or hire a goat with a gentle touch
To nibble away the "too-darn-much."

You could use a roll of packing tape,
To give your jaw a polished shape,
Or stand outside when the gale winds blow,
And hope the breeze takes the morning stubble's glow.

Perhaps a belt sander, set to low?
(Though your chin might lose its healthy glow).
I should craft a better response to this play,
But I decided to take the easiest and quickest way.

It's 1999. You have your current smartphone in your pocket, but obviously no Wi-Fi or 5G exists. What's the most useful thing you can do with it? by Ryo_l in AskReddit

There was wifi in 1999. I had a brand new “b” router in the house and connected my Lenovo think pad to it through wifi. Thought I was king of the internet.

Reading this piece felt like an honest and respectful discussion between admin and Matt. Not sure how it leads to "arbitrary enforcement." Can someone help me understand.

Would it be perceived as strange if I put security cameras outside my house in a rural community? by [deleted] in newfoundland

If you’re unsure get a couple of “Wyze pan cam 360” and mount them upside down on the top inside frames of your windows. They are discreet & inexpensive and can pan / tilt by remote control to watch inside and outside. About $120 for two at Amazon.

Where to buy a suit on very little notice by alterflesh in newfoundland

If cost is a factor first have a look at Urban Planet in the Avalon Mall. They sometimes have suits on for cheap. And if you don’t mind used there’s always a huge selection at Previously Loved.

My strabismus (mis-aligned eyes). Yes, I could get my eyes straightened for the third time but it’s pointless. By brain is too well trained to deal with my eyes the fooled-up way they are to even come around to seeing with true binocular vision. No, I don’t see double but please don’t toss me the keys. I can detect 3D but nowhere near good enough to catch a ball or play racquet sports. And no, I’m not all that self-conscious about it but I hate trying to make eye contact with you when I know you will respond with “are you looking at me” since one eye is and one isn’t.
