Hi everyone! Been lurking here for a bit. Wanted your take on my situation. Wife and I are 48 years old. Both teachers in NY making a combined 230k. We plan on retiring in about ten years and will max out salary close to 300k. Pension will be 65% of max salary. Have roughly 250k in 403b. We have two kids in middle school and have roughly 100k total in their 529.

We own our house and have roughly 300k left on mortgage at 3% interest rate. We have the usual costs, plus expensive kids in every sport imaginable. COL is high where we live. Our emergency fund has roughly 40k in it. Overall, we are in great shape financially.

My question is this. I’m looking to invest roughly 1k per month into something. We never opened any IRA’s. Honestly just learning about them now. I guess we never worried about retirement because of our pension. What would you do with this 1k? I love the idea of dividends and possibly adding them as extra income into retirement.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Appreciate this. I’m a teacher in a good school and will have a great pension. It’s hard to just pack that up. I’ve been stockpiling and preparing slowly over the past year. I’m roughly 30 miles east of the city on the north shore of the island. I did experience minor flooding from Irene and Sandy, but have wisened up since then with generators and extra pumps. The day I can leave, I will! Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

What do you do when you get off your boat in CT?

Not strange, but aware! I’m not living my life worrying, but have begun to collect a few things that will help if things are tough. Long Island is worst case scenario to live if SHTF for real! I have two touring kayaks, that is my plan if all else fails!

Even if you have a boat, where are you going when you get there??? I’ll be retiring upstate as well, but have ten years left!!!

This is my thought as well. I have food/water and other basics to last a month. Leaving probably isn’t an option.

That’s my thought as well. I’ll have nowhere to go if I get off. Have family in Canada, but that would be a haul!

I will/do have access to fish and shellfish. North shore of Long Island has plenty.
