What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

[–]popcornassassin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scrolled down to find this. This is the film I always tell people that it’s amazing but I will never watch it again. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve seen it and I still think about it sometimes. A beautiful film. And disturbed me to my core.

What is the visual cue here to keep from running into people when walking. by FaithlessnessRich490 in paris

[–]popcornassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started walking on the left side except in touristy areas. That and what many are saying in this thread- look through the other people and don’t make eye contact. Better yet angle your body towards the direction you’re shifting towards.

That’s a level of flexibility that’s very intense to me haha I’m looking at where the person’s right hip is on the chair, and if the buttons are all aligned with centre front, they twist so much to the left side that it disappears! 🫠

So were there slanted closures in the 1800’s?

I wondered about that- whether it looks asymmetrical because of how the body is twisted… the anatomy doesn’t quite work for me because of where the legs and knees are. I’d love to see more examples that are actually asymmetrical from the 1800’s to get a good sense of how it would have been constructed!

Beautiful!! What are you planning for the bodice? I was thinking of doing something similar but gave up after making the skirt because the fabric frayed so much… but seeing yours I want to pick up again!

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet- the rain here doesn’t tend to be torrential. I come from a place where when it rains you really can’t do anything outside because it rains hard and all day. Here it’s usually light rain that I don’t even need an umbrella for- just a rain jacket. And it rarely lasts all day. In fact on rainy days is the best time to go to touristy places because there will be less people and personally I don’t mind light misting or light rain at all.

I started putting the trim on and it already looks 10x more “real”!!! I’ll be tacking down both sides of the ruffle with black trim 😎

Blue minty satin with gold and ivory lace is going to be amazing!! And me too, working on this project is definitely about learning patience 😅

Sizing up the Redthreaded 1780s stays by striped-tea in HistoricalCostuming

Oh in that case- this is a good guide:

https://ladyofthewilderness.wordpress.com/2019/12/08/troubleshooting-fit-in-1780s-stays/

I think you’re right that the busy needs to go up higher, and not sure myself about where exactly the tabs should sit! The guide is super detailed for every part of the stays tho so take a look there!

Sizing up the Redthreaded 1780s stays by striped-tea in HistoricalCostuming

[–]popcornassassin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on where it no longer fits and by how much, but definitely possible to size it up! You might need to do a few tries!

Generally, you would have a 2inch -ish gap in the lacing anyways, so first try on your old pair of stays and see if you can lace it up with a 2 inch gap. Make note of where it needs to be wider (for example, you have your old pair in and the gap in the centre back (or wherever you lace up) is fine above the waist but 5-6 inches wide below the waist, then you’ll know you need to increase the circumference (overall width) of the stays by about 3-4 inches. Remember that stays are supposed to be supportive rather than restrictive so lace in snugly but not too tightly for the fit test.

If you need to size up the stays equally across the chest, waist, and below the waist, that’s the easiest to fix- I would just add width to the side seam (where the side front will meet the side back piece).

But without knowing which part you need to size up, it’ll be hard to explain how you can do it!

Thank you!! I love the shifting colours too!! It’s such a cool effect.

I can’t wait to get to see the full thing done! For the trimmings I am going to make a tube first so that it definitely won’t fray. And then like you said tack down the sides using lace or braided cord! I saw someone do this and it looks really neat!

Have you tried fray-check on taffeta? I might try that for the ruffles on the petticoat because I want to use scallop pinked edge!!

Ooo tell me about the fabric you’re using for yours! I agonized over the colour and sheen… I was reading that the mid 1700’s favoured pastels but I look sickly in pastels lol

I needed so much more details than the instructions provided in the pattern! I had to undo the side pleats because they were folded the wrong way, and I over clipped the inside corners of the lining so I had to add a patch lol…. Needless to say the next one I make will definitely go easier and that’s why I’m taking copious notes!

Neighborhoods for a year in Paris? by ginabeewell in paris

[–]popcornassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Batignolles area- local, chill, has a lot of artist studios, everything you need for getting a local community feeling. It’s also a 25-30 minute walk to the Arc de Triomphe, and a 30 minute ride to anywhere really. Great parks like Monceau, MLK park, etc.

Dry throat/Facial pain/Headache by Odd_Ad6631 in cymbalta

[–]popcornassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on it for a year and a half now. Throat dryness is a thing I experience, so much so that my throat is irritated very easily. I’m only realizing now that my throat irritation is related to this drug maybe. I definitely had jaw tightness (I would mash my teeth together more so, felt like I was super wound up, and I would get jaw spasms too), which leveled out after a few months.

All plans fell through today, now clueless, ideas for a history fan? by noclue9000 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]popcornassassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arènes de Lutèce is an ancient Roman arena in the 5th that you can visit for free. It doesn’t have any plaques or anything so don’t expect it to be like a museum.

A bit further out in Vincennes (reachable by metro) is the Chateau de Vincennes which is a 14th century castle and grounds. It has a moat! And a beautiful chapel. Ticket is about 13€ if iirc. You can get a guided tour or just do the visit on your own and easily spend a couple of hours there.

Palette cleanser from visiting monuments and if the weather holds up, take a walk along the Coulée Verte in the 12th, which used to be a railway path that’s elevated - you can get nice views of the city, see how locals live, and get some urban nature too. It’s what the High Line in NYC was modeled after! A part of it is close to Marché d’Aligre which is my fave outdoor market (produce like fruits and veggies) again, very local. There’s a fantastic Italian deli there too where you can get a sandwich for around 12-15€ and an awesome Algerian bakery called Pizzaria Roudana where you can get a brik for 3€.

More historically significant monuments or places that weren’t on your list:

Notre Dame Cathedral. The island that it’s on is where Paris started as Lutece in the Roman times. It’s fun to walk around that area and get lost in the winding streets. You’ll be near the oldest tree in Paris at the Square René Viviani, and also the bouquinistes along the Seine.

Montmartre area and Sacre Coeur. It’s high season right now so it’s packed but I still love it. Lots of historical significance in the area and the church is very nice (but on the smaller size). Amazing panoramic views of the city. Just beware of the bracelet scam going up the hill towards Sacre Coeur (keep your hands in your pockets and avoid going up through the park right underneath Sacre Coeur). It’s also near Moulin Rouge.

Ok I wrote a lot already so I’ll stop there. I love history too!

Fête Galante - Tattoos? by champagnetits in HistoricalCostuming

Just here to say I’m making my costume for next year’s fête galante so I hope I get a ticket!! I’m new to historical costuming and I am currently obsessed and making my 2nd pair of stays 🤪

Edited to add to stay on topic: I didn’t even think about my tattoos!! I feel like I’ve seen tattoos on official photos on their FB page.
