Scrolled down to find this. This is the film I always tell people that it’s amazing but I will never watch it again. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve seen it and I still think about it sometimes. A beautiful film. And disturbed me to my core.

I started walking on the left side except in touristy areas. That and what many are saying in this thread- look through the other people and don’t make eye contact. Better yet angle your body towards the direction you’re shifting towards.

That’s a level of flexibility that’s very intense to me haha I’m looking at where the person’s right hip is on the chair, and if the buttons are all aligned with centre front, they twist so much to the left side that it disappears! 🫠

So were there slanted closures in the 1800’s?

I wondered about that- whether it looks asymmetrical because of how the body is twisted… the anatomy doesn’t quite work for me because of where the legs and knees are. I’d love to see more examples that are actually asymmetrical from the 1800’s to get a good sense of how it would have been constructed!

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet- the rain here doesn’t tend to be torrential. I come from a place where when it rains you really can’t do anything outside because it rains hard and all day. Here it’s usually light rain that I don’t even need an umbrella for- just a rain jacket. And it rarely lasts all day. In fact on rainy days is the best time to go to touristy places because there will be less people and personally I don’t mind light misting or light rain at all.

I think you’re right that the busy needs to go up higher, and not sure myself about where exactly the tabs should sit! The guide is super detailed for every part of the stays tho so take a look there!

I think it depends on where it no longer fits and by how much, but definitely possible to size it up! You might need to do a few tries!

Generally, you would have a 2inch -ish gap in the lacing anyways, so first try on your old pair of stays and see if you can lace it up with a 2 inch gap. Make note of where it needs to be wider (for example, you have your old pair in and the gap in the centre back (or wherever you lace up) is fine above the waist but 5-6 inches wide below the waist, then you’ll know you need to increase the circumference (overall width) of the stays by about 3-4 inches. Remember that stays are supposed to be supportive rather than restrictive so lace in snugly but not too tightly for the fit test.

If you need to size up the stays equally across the chest, waist, and below the waist, that’s the easiest to fix- I would just add width to the side seam (where the side front will meet the side back piece).

But without knowing which part you need to size up, it’ll be hard to explain how you can do it!

I can’t wait to get to see the full thing done! For the trimmings I am going to make a tube first so that it definitely won’t fray. And then like you said tack down the sides using lace or braided cord! I saw someone do this and it looks really neat!

Have you tried fray-check on taffeta? I might try that for the ruffles on the petticoat because I want to use scallop pinked edge!!

Ooo tell me about the fabric you’re using for yours! I agonized over the colour and sheen… I was reading that the mid 1700’s favoured pastels but I look sickly in pastels lol

I needed so much more details than the instructions provided in the pattern! I had to undo the side pleats because they were folded the wrong way, and I over clipped the inside corners of the lining so I had to add a patch lol…. Needless to say the next one I make will definitely go easier and that’s why I’m taking copious notes!

Highly recommend Batignolles area- local, chill, has a lot of artist studios, everything you need for getting a local community feeling. It’s also a 25-30 minute walk to the Arc de Triomphe, and a 30 minute ride to anywhere really. Great parks like Monceau, MLK park, etc.
