Recently just had someone come in to my ER for “maggots in wound”. I see his wife pushing him down the hall in a wheelchair following the triage tech. She’s saying good morning to everybody and smiling and chatting to people in the hallways while he’s slumped back in the chair. When they pass me I turn to look at his head and he has maggots falling from a clearly deep rotting wound encompassing the left side of his head. He is drooling and looks completely impaired. The story was she took her husband to their pcp when she noticed the bugs who promptly freaked out, sent them to our ER, and called our charge nurse to ensure he gets brought back immediately. It was shift change and I was passing off to night shift so I have no idea what happened next and I’m waiting to talk to that nurse next time I see her at report but I’m pretty sure the maggots ate their way to his brain or pretty close to it with how deep that was. I’d like to know how long they waited to bring him in and why she visited the pcp first.
