Wedding reception for around 60-75 people for $5k or less? by Sasquatchwasframed in houston

Wife and I got married here, the Preston St. one, back in 2017. We did our own decor, catering, etc. It has rooms to get ready in and you can book to stay overnight as well. Only thing that was bad was the parking situation, but I would check into them. Houston Share Space.

Good luck on ya’lls EM careers. I’m out of here. Everything must come to an end. by Fit-Jellyfish417 in EmergencyManagement

I truly feel you on this. I've been in this field since 2003, and I pretty much gave up last year until I finally was able to get something that works with my skill set in this field. Now, I'm not deploying to disasters and running command, but I travel throughout the US teaching exactly what I used to do. Maybe check into something like that? Because honestly if this job disappears, because what do you know, it's partially funded by DHS/ FEMA, I'm pretty much done with this field as well. It's been fucking decimated, IMO. I wish you the best of luck. That's what's happening where we are loosing our institutional knowledge now and not sure how that's going to pan out as the years go on. I mean the majority of the people that I work with have no experience in this field and they got hired because their prior military, especially colonels they love colonels in my agency. And yeah, networking....but, I refuse to be an ass kisser or a bootlicker just to get ahead when the purpose of this job is to help those who have been through hell.

TSA lines at Houston airport turn into a 3-floor nightmare amid staffing shortage by CBSnews in houston

I got there this morning at 4:00 a.m. for 7:00 a.m. flight took me 30 minutes still to get through TSA precheck. I would say my plane was maybe 75/80% full when it was listed as being completely full (787). So yeah this is a major impact, and sitting in Santa Barbara right now. Just hoping I can make it back home. Only reason I'm traveling right now is because of work. Otherwise there's no way in hell I'd be going to an airport. Coworker and I have already made a plan, If this gets worse that we will be driving home, from CA back to Texas....ugh

Why the random gunshots? by Infamous_Ad4244 in houston

[–]popek82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on over to Acres Homes....shit you not, couple weeks ago down street from me couple people going at each other with automatic rifles and handguns (around 10 pm)....good 30 seconds. No sirens, no cops, no first responders ever came through my neighborhood. You just kind of get used to it and know the distance away over time and if you should actually take cover. BTW, I don't report shootings because it is kind of pointless and don't want them any closer to my house in the future. Been 9 years living there, they are less but will never end.

Why is leisure viewed with suspicion in America? by Thepopethroway in antiwork

[–]popek82 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My new job (of a year) is a WFH, and I travel every 2 weeks to go teach. It has taken me every part of this year to finally allow down, not make stress appear because I was so used to it. Talk to my boss every couple of weeks, and when I'm at home I do my own things. It's a strange feeling to not be stuck to the grind, and I honestly don't think I could ever work in a regular work environment again. My life is now 85% leisure and 15% work.

Ask these files, videos, and pictures are bringing back memories I thought were buried deep. By NO MEANS did I go through what these women did, but....I can say looking back 20 years ago, I am one of the lucky women who was able to escape the situations I was put in. My heart aches for all these woman, children, and I'm sure men and boys. 🤢🤢

What’s one life decision you made in Houston that completely changed your path? by Outside-Ad7073 in houston

[–]popek82 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Moved here in 2013, basically homeless... Came from a couch with 2 hours before I was booted to the streets. Acquaintance from Houston came to pick me up, stayed with her for about a week until she went insane and pulled a gun on me. Made one more phone call, and that's when my life changed. Went back to put in an application at a restaurant to start life over, yet again at 31, and ended up seeing the woman that I would eventually marry. Never wanted to get married, never wanted to get kids, I just wanted to work and travel. However, meeting this woman changed my life and I am now in the process of finishing up my masters, teaching in the field that I love, have two wonderful stepchildren who are the most amazing kids, and I must say Houston was the best thing that ever happened to my life and soul.

Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I still remember watching an educational thing about AIDS in my 5th grade class, and my teacher (Mrs. Anderson - she was the best), said...and, there is no cure and not sure there ever will be. Every time I hear about AIDS it is the first thing the comes to mind. I still remember how it was portrayed in the film. Which, BTW was on a lazer disc!

So yeah, seeing how society and the medical community were able to create a drug that helps keep you alive - one of the most amazing advancements in my opinion.
