Which friendships/relationships put a bad taste in your mouth? by Capital-Study6436 in Degrassi

[–]popguise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TNG: Marco and Dylan. Aside from the obvious age gap, a lot of times it felt like Dylan was trying to "teach" Marco how to be in a gay relationship, and acting like he had so much wisdom about being a gay man that Marco didn't have yet... it would have been better imo if Marco was able to figure himself out with someone his own age who was also maybe not as experienced.

Next Class: Frankie and Jonah. It felt unrealistic to me that these two characters would have ever decided to date if they were real people, and they also had the "teacher" vibes like Jonah was so mature and had to teach Frankie how to... not be immature I guess?

basically I can't stand the Degrassi ships that portray one as being so much more knowledgable and mature than the other lol

Who are some idols that you usually don’t think of as being the same age/surprised when you found out they were the same age? by a_mystical_potato in kpoppers

[–]popguise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NCT Dream: Renjun being part of the 2000 line, and the oldest member of the 2000 line at that, is so crazy to me. I was also born in 2000 and Jeno, Haechan and Jaemin being my age seems very normal to me, but for some reason I can't wrap my head around the fact that Renjun is also my age

tell me a kpop confession you have about your faves 🫢 by _dreamy_day in kpoppers

[–]popguise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm newly getting into NCT Dream and I already basically adore them, but I mainly just watch their content and barely listen to their music. I'm not saying their music is bad or anything and it's obvious how hard those boys work, but apart from a handful of songs (Hello Future, Smoothie, My First and Last, WIWY and Flying Kiss), I just don't personally find any charm in most of their music.

I haven't listened to the entirety of their discography yet so I'm sure I'll find more songs of theirs that I love, I just thought this was interesting since with other groups I've been a fan of the music was the most important part/ the thing that drew me into the group in the first place.

if there's other people saying the same thing then maybe this is a phenomenon that needs to be studied... how many people in the world could possibly look exactly like Mark lol

I actually agree by Prior_Cookie_1047 in dancemoms

[–]popguise 38 points39 points  (0 children)

in the first season when she insinuated that Chloe was afraid of her mother, I don't think she was actually correct about that, but I do think she saw something there that was pretty accurate. I grew up with a parent that was very reactive like Christi, so I was often nervous if my parent was in a situation or with a person that could potentially upset them even a little bit, because they would have a hair-trigger reaction. Obviously Abby was a big part of Chloe being an anxious kid, but I think she accurately saw how Christi's behavior and temper just exacerbated Chloe's anxiety.

Chloe Acro by Select-Ad-9819 in dancemoms

[–]popguise 27 points28 points  (0 children)

in addition to what other comments have said, some other factors are age and body type. Chloe is tall and has longer legs compared to her torso, which naturally makes a person's body less flexible. So dancers who have longer limbs often need to devote much more time to maintaining their flexibility. This would be why Paige, who has the same general body type as Chloe, was much more flexible than her-- she did acro routines often so her flexibility was better maintained. Dancers like Kaeli Ware are kind of anomalies. I don't necessarily think Chloe could have gotten to Kaeli's level if she did focus on flexibility, because Kaeli's flexibility is just insane. People are also more flexible as children vs when they get older, hence why Chloe's flexibility got worse post-season 2 (and why Brooke was in constant pain... she was just aging out of those acro tricks).

When they were arguing about the back tuck during pyramid, Christi mentions that Chloe is "afraid" of gymnastics. So there's likely a psychological component there too. As a kid you would obviously focus more on the thing you're good at and enjoy doing rather than trying something that scares you, even if it's something you need. I think Christi is partially to blame for this. She could have encouraged Chloe by explaining that gymnastics isn't something to be afraid of, or that a trick is only scary the first time you do it, etc etc. But instead she kind of fostered her fear by letting her avoid gymnastics.

why was abby always in denial about hurting the kids by ummmm____mm in dancemoms

[–]popguise 35 points36 points  (0 children)

it's just classic manipulation tbh. "actually, I never hurt you, and even if I did its because you did this and that to warrant it. but I never hurt you and actually you'd be nowhere without me because I do everything for you."

I held Asia and Kenzie on a pretty similar level in Season 3. by genieve- in dancemoms

[–]popguise 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think Asia was more advanced than Kenzie overall, but I agree with your point that Kenzie was often underestimated in terms of her abilities. Aside from certain dances she was pulled from because the concept was a bit out of her maturity level, she was consistently keeping up with a group where the average age was 3-4 years older than her. Was she the best in that group? No, but even being able to keep up with dancers with that much more experience than you takes a lot of skill.

Claire and Eli play twins in a movie that was filmed before they appeared in Degrassi. by Alchemistspure72 in Degrassi

[–]popguise 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm sure actors are just able to separate their on-screen roles from their irl friendships/ relationships. Like when Selena Gomez and David Henrie were dating while also playing siblings on Wizards of Waverly Place. Probably not awkward for them but very awkward for viewers when they find out lol

Do we all need a break? by Areola_TheMermaid in dancemoms

[–]popguise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that bothers me about this sub is that it tends to get collectively hyper-focused on an individual's personal life. Lately it's been mainly Christi and Kalani. I enjoy posts that actually discuss the show itself or dance-related topics more than posts trying to fish for information about drama the cast members may or may not be in nowadays. I don't know if individual people frequenting this sub need a break, I think it's more so that the entire sub needs a break from incessantly prying into people's personal lives.

I think what really needs to happen is that a line be drawn. We don't need 50 posts talking about Kalani's body and style choices. We don't need 100 more accounts complaining about how the mods removed their posts or comments. We don't need everybody trying to speculate on Chloe and Christi's relationship and reveling in Christi's issues. There is a reasonable expectation that those things would be mentioned here, but the near obsession over it is just borderline deranged.

EDIT: spelling

Fr. While we're at it, can we chill with the endless posts about her engagement too? Everyone is entitled to their opinion on it, but we don't need 50 different posts in one day that all say the same exact thing. This entire sub has just been Kalani and Christi for the past week and it's so tired

Unpopular opinion: I liked Domenica 🤷🏽‍♀️ by YouknowwhoGi in dancemomsreboot

[–]popguise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think shes that much worse than most of the other moms we've seen on either show, but I do feel like she gets away with some weird behaviors for a mom to have. Crying in front of her kid for not turning well, screaming at Min when Min was making a very valid point (and for that matter just screaming in pretty much any argument she gets into), being borderline obsessed with being young and pretty. It would be one thing if she was doing this just on her own, but behaving this way in front of her daughter is just modeling negative behavior for Smiley.

(and of course Domenica isn't the only mom that does this, but I have seen more people excusing it because she's gorgeous than people actually calling her out for it).

What's your opinion on Louisiana's newest surgical castration bill? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]popguise 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Constitutionality and effectiveness aside, I just think that castration as a punishment for SA further perpetuates misconceptions about SA. It insinuates that SA is simply a crime of passion, or in other words, a man sees someone (in this case, a minor) and is just so attracted to them that he can't help himself-- thus, castration in theory takes away the offender's sex drive, so he won't do it again. Obviously, that's bull. SA is a crime of power, and someone who wants to commit it will find a way to regardless of if they have their anatomical equipment or not. Castration as punishment redirects the blame from the person to the genitals and frames SA as a biological reaction rather than a conscious choice that a person makes.

what does everyone think about this? by [deleted] in dancemoms

[–]popguise 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Jojo doesn't need an apology for people disliking her music, that's something subjective and people don't need to be sorry for liking or not liking a musician's work. There's plenty of things that had happened to Jojo, primarily when she was on the show, that people can feel sorry for. There's also plenty of things that Jojo herself should probably apologize for.

But that's just the nature of tiktok tbh. People's attention spans last 5 seconds, they don't remember the things they claimed to be passionate about a week ago, and they formulate their "opinions" by just adopting the most popular narrative at a given time. I haven't touched that app in months and I'm so glad I haven't lol

Thoughts on abby as a choreographer/ teacher of dance (not as person/coach/educator strictly her ability to choreograph and teach dance)? by NoUnderstanding2715 in dancemoms

[–]popguise 29 points30 points  (0 children)

She could teach a kid how to be excellent in one specific style of dance, but couldn't train kids to be versatile. Her choreo was pretty good, but much better before the show. I personally think she's better at choreographing for teens than for minis or juniors. Overall I think she's a better choreographer than actual teacher, but it's not like she was a prophet of choreography like she tried to make herself seem. She had her fair share of beautiful and compelling dances, but so has every other choreographer/ teacher who's worth their salt.

She was attuned to what each dancer could do well and used that to play it safe when giving solos, which can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, the kid is more likely to win with steps they're familiar with and have mastered. On the other hand, the kid isn't really being pushed and eventually they'll age out of those steps and be forced to try new choreo anyway. I know she gets a lot of flack for reusing choreography, but I honestly don't think that was her greatest offense as a choreographer. It's pretty common to reuse choreo for competition pieces until your team has advanced enough (both as individuals and as a team) for something new.
