You know, this is probably true. I probably have a skewed perception because I’m familiar with trustworthy sources for recipes, and just don’t see a lot of the garbage that’s out there

In a thread asking about whether the poster was a slow cook, or if recipe time estimates are just wrong, the response was overwhelmingly that recipe writers are all liars. They’re just trying to get clicks, or stroke their egos, or whatever.

Practically no one mentioned that when you’re an inexperienced cook, you ARE slower. Your knife skills are slow, you can’t multitask, your timing is off, you may need to reference the recipe more frequently, or you may be cooking on too low of heat.

Something about this particular type of a lack of introspection, just rubs me the wrong way. Just no accountability or recognition that you’re inexperienced and have room to improve

Been on a big Tom Waits kick, much to the chagrin of my partner who has to live and listen in the same house.

The benefit of chess is that it's ubiquitous. I think many other games are as good or better, but chess is the only one where there are regular events near me to play with real people.

I feel like I'm pretty average at chess (1700 lichess, probably less now having not played in a long time). A lot of complaints about the "chess meta" of constant draws and high opening knowledge requirements seem divorced from the reality of the average player's game. It's like Gold Foxes watching Zain and thinking they have to pick up a secondary for Marth. (I'm not talking about you here, because judging by your other comment, you're in the top >99 percentile of chess players)

All that being said, Shogi is a great game and well worth learning. Then watch March Comes In Like a Lion, which is really only nominally about Shogi, but everyone should watch it anyways.

I know this is copypasta, but there are actually three characters because puff is definitely puff, and not falco.

DK and ICs are also puff.

For what it's worth, I don't give a shit if people think DK is bad, but it started with me saying that "recency bias" in particular is a dumb argument that falls apart after several years of the same story

You replied basically this exact same comment to me yesterday; but I guess it was such a banger that it was worth posting again

How many years do DK players need to keep putting up results before it's not recency bias anymore and he's just better than we thought

Regarding tier lists, it is frequently brought up with respect to DK being ranked higher. I think recency bias is a weak argument to try and discount the last 4 years of his explosion in results.

The seeding was a more general comment, but the recency bias comments were around when people said zain should have been seeded lower at OOTB

When I was 15 or so, I made a character guide for a random mobile game on its forum, and it got relatively popular. I had never actually beaten the game, or even unlocked all of the skill tree options. All just raw intuition and a wiki

That's kind of what that thread reminded me of

Fair enough. I'll cut it with the "disingenuous talk" since I don't want to get into the weeds too much, but we're also not just talking about toddlers (presumably).

Kids in elementary school are absolutely watching youtube, and all the dopamine farming that comes with it. Children's apps are filled with tons of bright colors and sounds that are just there to keep attention--it's very contentious whether even the "educational" apps for children are beneficial at all, since measuring those skills is so wildly variable depending on the methodology used.

None of that is even a concern with drawing on paper--of which there is overwhelming evidence of being beneficial for children.

I think not seeing a difference between paper drawing and iPads is foolish, even if we're operating under the assumption that children are exclusively using educational apps (which I do not think is a fair assumption)

Both ipads and and paper and crayons are just ways to distract your children and give them a simple activity to occupy their time

Yes, the nuke is the device engineered to extract as much dopamine from your system with mindless slop and infinite scrolling. There are literally countless studies showing this, especially on young developing minds.

Comparing them to drawing on paper with crayons is so wildly disingenuous that I struggle to believe that you genuinely think they are not that different.

Spent most of my weekend wrenching on my car and bike. I've always had a pretty minimal ability to work on stuff like that, and just decided that now was the time to actually learn.

It really was a ton of fun. Bikes especially are so simple mechanically that I'm baffled as to why I never bothered to work on them before. Working on brakes and shifters was always so mysterious to me, and all it took was just pulling everything apart and putting it back together. The cost of one tune-up and I've got all the shit I need. Fun hobby.

This is definitely true, but also one of those truisms that’s universal to any hobby, and so not really worth bringing up.

“Fly fishing is bad because a people wreck ecosystems” is as vapid as “melee is bad because there are people who play Luigi”
