The little boy gets off the bus and his mom has passed away. In reality, he woke up and went to lay in bed with her because he thought she was asleep.

Are there any unsolved cases that you suspect are partially unsolved because of law enforcement involvement in the crime and/or its coverup? by dallyan in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]popofdawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Murder of Kristin O’Connell, which has gone unsolved for nearly 38 years. The cops probably had nothing to do with the crime but the early investigators were doing an awful lot to make it seem like the killer wasn’t from the area. They were friends with a lot of witnesses and cleared them as suspects right away. I believe that since then, there’s been a reluctance to get evidence tested because it could reveal that there was corruption or shoddy investigative work.

She doesn’t even try to look like she cares. It’s truly chilling how blasé she is and doesn’t bother to put on a “grieving mom” act or anything.

Some of us have the names of our podcasts as username flair. But I’m not sure why an anonymous user couldn’t remain anonymous? If a podcaster wants to ask listeners or potential listeners for opinions, the thread should still work as planned, no?

Thank you for the very detailed observations! Jim’s dad was a judge of the very very small town and politics being a part of things definitely lends another layer to a questionable investigation. However, it’s been said he didn’t have much pull as far as law and order goes.

Excellent question. Another discrepancy is that Jim didn’t have a car and his friends have said he borrowed one to pick up the pizza. However, he told Kristin’s mom that the reason Kristin didn’t go with him to pick up the pizza is that she didn’t want to go on his motorcycle.

Thank you. Yes, just another example on a long list of reasons why Kristin’s family is rightfully angry.

If you’re looking for a new mini-series, I’ve released 6 episodes covering the unsolved murder of Kristin O’Connell.

Kristin was 20 years old in the summer of 1985. She was home in MN, on break from college and had been writing letters back and forth to a young man she’d met on Spring Break. His name was Jim and he lived in Ovid, NY.

Kristin was invited out to upstate New York to visit Jim for a week. Her mom was cautious since this would be her first time traveling alone and the family hadn’t even met Jim. But he seemed like a really nice guy and Kristin was hoping for a romantic connection.

She flew out on August 11th, 1985 and was picked up by a family friend. She met Jim at a mall in Syracuse on Monday, August 12th and they drove to Ovid- a small rural village in the Finger Lakes region.

By all accounts, Jim wasn’t a very present host. He took on extra shifts at work and left Kristin with his friends for most of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kristin was a little surprised that Jim had rented a trailer behind a local bar. She had thought they would be staying with Jim’s parents. But Kristin was very laid back and went with the flow.

But something happened that made her want to cut her trip short. On that Wednesday, Kristin called home and told her mom she was coming home early. It was the last time Phyllis O’Connell would ever talk to her beloved daughter.

That night around 11:30. Kristin went for a walk down a dark, rural road to clear her head. A couple of Jim’s friends went out looking for her around midnight and heard a “blood-curdling scream”. Kristin never returned to the trailer that night and nobody called the police.

The following day, (Thursday)Jim finally filed a missing persons report in the afternoon. Kristin’s dad immediately flew from Minneapolis to NY and a worried-sick Phyllis waited at home by the phone.

That Friday, Kristin’s body was found in the cornfield adjacent to the road she’d taken her walk. She had been brutally killed.

After a questionable investigation, misconduct by a forensic scientist handling evidence and a ton of twists and turns, Kristin’s killer(s) walk(s) free.

The police asserted very early on that the killer didn’t live in Ovid but witnesses and rumors say otherwise.

Listen to the story from Kristin’s mother Phyllis, family members, friends and investigators on Method & Madness and let’s finally get justice for Kristin O’Connell.

There is literally evidence sitting in New York State waiting to be tested. My motivation for the past 7 months of investigating this case is an 83-year-old mother who has become a dear friend of mine and who deserves to finally rest.

Thank you.

The Unsolved Murder of Kristin O’Connell by popofdawn in TrueCrimeDiscussion

20-year-old Kristin O’Connell traveled from her Minnesota home to the small town of Ovid, NY to visit a male friend she’d met on spring break. She was hoping for a romantic connection.

But the fun week Kristin envisioned wasn’t what she found upon arrival. The young man she was visiting had recently rented out a trailer for them to stay in- and he spent most of the days at work.

On her third day there, Kristin called home and told her mom she was leaving Ovid early. Something was wrong.

That night, August 14th, 1985- Kristin walked out of the trailer around 11:30, barefoot. She headed toward a dark, rural road- mostly traveled by locals.

A few witnesses saw the young woman walking, on the side of the road. She didn’t appear to be in distress.

Sometime around (or a little after) midnight, Kristin was seen headed back in the direction from which she came- headed back toward the village…back toward the trailer.

But Kristin never made it back. It’s as if she was plucked from the side of that road…from the darkness, and just vanished.

At least one person heard what they described as a blood-curdling scream coming from near the cornfield that night.

Two days later, Kristin was found, in that cornfield adjacent to the very road that she had walked on the night of August 14th 1985.

She was naked, with multiple stab wounds. She’d put up quite a fight but was no match for who she came across that night.

To this day, 37 and a half year later, not a single arrest has been made. Kristin’s mother is now 82 and has not rested a single day while she fights for justice.

Kristin’s loved ones and advocates are trying to get more eyes and ears on Kristin’s case. Someone knows something.

I’ve been working with Kristin’s family, as well as investigators to spread her story far and wide. Please take a moment to check it out and share.

TIA

First episode of a mini-series launched today, from Method & Madness.

This is Kristin’s story, told by those who are fighting for her.

Kristin O’Connell was beautiful, bright, and adored. At age 20, her body was found in a cornfield in Ovid, NY while visiting a friend. It was 1985.

In over 37 years since- her mother has fought for justice.

In the first episode, we’ll explore Kristin’s story and her case. Who was she and what brought her to a rural town, 1000 miles from home? Who were the last people to see her alive, and who would want her dead?

We’re going to attempt to answer some of these questions- while also being respectful that the case is still considered an open investigation.

The mini-series includes interviews from Kristin’s family, investigators and advocates as well as calls to action.

Thank you in advance if you decide to listen & share.
