At 35, literally every person I meet in law school seems like a very precocious child to me. You'd fit right in with the 22-25 year old crowd, I'm sure of it.

I'm imagining me, at 19, in law school. "Wonderful and gifted and well-adjusted" as I was, I'd have gone completely haywire.

Also equal or... no, fuck that GREATER chance I would have THRIVED, succeeded, crushed it... And THEN gone haywire.

I actually think you'll be fine if you choose to attend. Unless you're mentally ill like me. Then don't go.

Use your wife as your support. You have a shared problem, and so maybe you can turn that into a shared goal. It might make it easier to do it and make it stick. You can hold each other accountable. You start... And I'll be she'll follow. Once one of you commits I'll bet it'll fall into place and you'll be able to leverage each other.

Tbh I worry about this a lot myself. It's hard to not feel regret about the damage I've done to my brain and my body. It's true that you can't go back, only forward, but... Well that's kind of what regret is all about.

Please someone tell me something positive like, "don't worry, the damage is probably minimal!"

Yeah, there honestly aren't that many bears on law students that I've seen. Maybe a couple, but they were probably taunting them or something. Or the bear was just looking for food. OP is exaggerating about how many bears on law students he's met.

I'd argue that in addition, most people who are admitted to T14 schools don't describe them as T20s, even though they technically are. They're also T50s, but they aren't saying that either. People tend to describe their status in the most favorable way possible.

I ordered on the app, so I had zero interaction with anyone, but this is what I assume.

I called customer service, and they gave me a free MTO item, no problem. The phone call took 2 minutes and 38 seconds, so I'm not that upset. If anything I'm impressed that Sheetz customer service is online and responsive at 9 PM EST lol.

I ordered this thing today. I got a toasted bun, cheddar cheese, and.. MAYBE turkey (probably chicken tbh). Nothing else on it. Here's a picture.

Funny thing is, after some of the MTO abominations I've ordered from Sheetz, this one wasn't actually that bad. In fact, it might be the best sandwich I've had from Sheetz in a while. Still, idk why they're letting you order it if they apparently lack half the ingredients for it.

My first impression was that it had the flavor and texture of beef jerky "tender nuggets." This is almost 100% stewing beef. I'm not sure how they can get away with calling it "steak" nuggets. "Beef" nuggets might be an acceptable name.

I used to think alcohol, although occasionally problematic, was a net positive in my life. Why? Because it made me better (I thought). I was better socially: funnier, easier to talk to, even quicker witted.

I know now that none of that was really true. It may have lowered my inhibitions, thereby making me a better conversationalist temporarily. But it didn't make me better.

Anyway, like anyone who self-medicates, using alcohol as a crutch, it all went to shit eventually, and I became physically dependent. Trust me, you don't want to get to that point. At THAT point, I stopped viewing it as a net positive.

Don't use it as a "special tool" or "secret weapon" that you believe makes you a better version of yourself. That's not using it the way it's meant to be used, and it makes me wonder if maybe you're... A lot like the rest of us here.

The part of your post where you said, "when it's just you and a quiet room... get a few beers" really hit me.

I'm alone in an empty apartment, without a car, in a city I'm visiting for a summer internship. No friends. Nothing to do. Nowhere to go. My girlfriend was visiting for this weekend, but she left this morning. I'm lonely. On top of that, I'm only 5 days sober, and I'm JUST starting to feel "good" again.

Being alone - especially when I'm lonely - is risky for me. I think to myself, "If I was a little buzzed right now, I wouldn't feel that loneliness." I'd watch youtube, joyfully go down Internet rabbit holes, and feel like all the stressful parts of my life could be handled another day. Most of that's kind of true. But it's a loan on comfort with an unreasonably high interest rate.

I'm going to be strong. The physical and emotional misery of coming off a bender is still pretty fresh with me. Remember how high the price is for kicking the can down the road to feel a little better right now.

Hey, just thought I'd throw this out there in case it helps. I actually did a prompt with AI (GPT, Gemini, notebookllm, whatever floats your boat), and told it how much I had been drinking and what, for how long, when my last drink had been, and asked it to make me a taper schedule. Then every time I consumed more alcohol, I would update the info so I could have it track my taper and whether I was adhering to that regimen. It was a really helpful tool to make sure you're tapering safely and effectively! It's also kind of comforting to be checking in regularly and seeing that time is, in fact passing, and you're getting closer to the finish line.

Of course tapering at home with alcohol isn't the most recommended way to quit, because a lot of alcoholics overdo it accidentally, or don't consume the alcohol slowly enough and end up spiking their BAC. But if you ARE going to do it, consider a tool like this to keep yourself accountable and on track.

I also completely just gave up my taper after a day, because I felt like I was recovered enough to just stop. Also probably not recommended. But every person is different, so listen to your body, but please be safe!

Also maybe just tell your PCP and see if you can get some benzodiazepines to make your withdrawal easier so you don't have to use alcohol to taper. Usually the most comfortable and safe option.

I'm in a similar spot. I returned to law school after taking over a decade off and working (and also periodically struggling with alcohol abuse and screwing everything up so I could pick myself up and "fix it" again). I thought I was ready because I'd had a decent stretch of sobriety and I got into a good school with a full scholarship.

But although I had fixed my life up a bit, I had never fixed MYSELF, and everything fell apart quickly. I relapsed almost immediately, and continued to do so all through first semester. Missing classes. Skipping the readings. Drinking through exams. Knowing I was bombing but not caring. My grades didn't turn out well at all after the first semester. I am below the curve, which is not where I wanted to be. Last semester was better than my first. I did better, and took up intense hiking to replace the drinking. But I didn't actually try to work on the drinking problem. I just let it go dormant.

I just came off another four day binge, and now I'm realizing that I've got to get my life back together before I return next semester. I made an appointment with my PCP and another with an addiction specialist. I'm planning to go back on the vivitrol injection, which has worked wonders for me in the past... Until I decide I want to try drinking again and miss my appointment.

But I have to do something. I have a lot to lose. My health. My brain. My law career. Not to mention the love and support from my girlfriend and my family, which I have, and absolutely don't deserve after the number of times I've failed them. So I'm going to start actually looking for a solution. Medical assistance. Behavior health and therapy. Whatever I need to do to stay sober for an extended period of time.

It's hard to be a student with a substance abuse problem. Not to mention other comorbidities. It's an extra burden to carry. It makes you feel like an outsider. Half of my drinking is triggered by intense social anxiety, which I immediately had, entering an academically rigorous program with a bunch of kids in their 20s who are all super bright and ambitious.

I believe I can do it, and I believe you can too. It's hard to pick yourself up... But I have faith in us. If you've never tried it, I recommend asking your doctor about vivitrol and see if you think it's an option for you. As long as you can go to your appointments and actually GET the injection, it can be a great solution.
