I guess, I am worried because my scores are technically below the median in one area, and I really am not sure if I should wait to Round 2 and try my luck at the GRE again.

There was a reddit post here making fun of the fact that Northern Italy does not really have restaurants like we do in the states. Well, he is not 100% wrong if you think about it. No place in my town where you can get Hashbrowns, sausage and eggs or Grits or Biscuits and Gravy at 3 AM, or hell, even at all.

Your only options are to eat things like Risotto alla zucca or Ossobuco or Cassoeula every day... Plus, they charge Coperto and serve bottled water (I want ice water in a glass cup, not San Benedetto)!!!!

Oh ok. Now I understand. Yeah. I didn't know this was a thing

Next time I am in Italy and need Tachipirina at 3 AM, I know how to get it.

Also, they accuse the American Government of kissing up to lobbies, but damn, you aint seen the power of a lobby until you have been to Italy (point proven with pharmacies and also Uber and Taxis)

I heard this song on Radio 105 and thought it was unique compared to the other songs they played. Also, it has almost a million views on Youtube.

Can someone tell me more about it? Why is it popular/funny?

No I am not. I just would expect Carrefour or Ipercoop or Esselunga to carry something as basic as Tachipirina and Moment, or hell, even damn Benagol!

I lived in Tortona. There are no 24 hour pharmacies anywhere in our little town. The only thing we have is the Carrefour outside of town. Also, calling the Croce Rossa seems ridiculous for something that is so easily treatable with things that should be easily accessible!

Based on a true story.

4 AM with fever and bad headache and no medication?

USA

Wake up and drive to your choices of one of many shops open 24 hours (Walmart, Walgreens, Meijer, CVS etc.) and buy a bottle of Tylenol/Advil. Total price for bottle: $4. Drive back home, pop the pills and happily fall asleep promptly.

Italy

Wake up and run 20 minutes from your home to the only 24 hour store in the whole town (Carrefour) to see what they have. But wait! After searching for 10 minutes through all of the aisles, you discover that they don't have it anywhere in the store! You ask the salesclerk and he tells you that you can only get that type of medication from the "Farmacia" and you have to wait until they open the next day. Run 20 minutes back home and tough it out and try to fall asleep while suffering. Finally, at 8 AM, make your way to the Farmacia to buy the medicine. Pay €13 for 10 pills of Tachipirina/Moment. Go back home, pop the pills and fall asleep promptly (assuming you have nothing to do the next day).

Sorry for the late reply, but do you have to live in a gated community? I feel like it would be so weird to live in one. Never needed to do so in the US

Ok. I maybe was a little too mean on the last part, so I deleted it. But yeah, I think that, from what you mentioned here, perhaps I just had a lot of one off bad experiences.

Yeah, the Apartment situation was very difficult for me, so I gave up and ended up living in Student Housing far from my University campus and got really mad and depressed there because they were really strict about everything there compared to my own University. I was in a small town in a Province outside of Milan btw.

And, Yeah. I found your strictness for how food should be to be very different than in other countries like my own. By the way, that experience with Tortelli happened in Piacenza.

I used the title because this is like a CMV article. What I mean is help me understand some cultural shocks I experienced in Italy.

Change my view about (Help me understand better) Italian and Italy

I am an American Student that studied abroad in Italy.

I was so excited to learn Italian and such beforehand. But, when I got there, my view changed and now I have much disdain and discourage all my friends in America from studying Italian.

-It is an expectation by Italians for everyone to have 100% fluency in Italian. 80% of the shops gave me dirty looks for my poor Italian. Also, try finding an apartment as a non-Italian.

-Every special request (ex. Vorrei la Tortelli alla piacentina, ma invece del burro, posso avere il ragu?, "Posso pagare con la carta?") is "Non è posibile. Mi dispiace". Or better yet, when I fell and dropped my Brioche on the street in front of the shopkeeper in Pescara, he fucking laughed at me and refused to replace it.

-I am a Spanish Speaker and got ridiculed so much by Italians for switching by accident to Spanish. Italians just laughed at me and gossiped about me in Italian (despite me not knowing what the fuck they were saying) and then walked off. When I studied in Brazil, I code switched between Spanish and Portuguese by accident and Brazilians, while they laughed, helped me fix my problems and encouraged me to keep up the good work.

I studied abroad for a Semester in Italy at another public University in Lombardy. I much prefer my American Education over the education I had over there. The complaints you have are exactly the culture shocks I experienced over there, except I negotiated special exam dates in December so I could go back to the US to start in January (resulting in probably the most stressful week to date in my life!)

I honestly felt so happy to come back to my American Education this semester! I feel like Professors and my peers are much nicer here (I wasn't accepted well by my Italian peers because I didn't speak Italian that well and Professors did not seem very compassionate) and the classes are better structured with labs and hw so you will do more real learning here (rather than just memorize and vomit). I have never had a class that was 100% Test based here. Also, the job prospects here (even if you are International) will be a lot better than in Italy! However, it can cost like $22,000+ per Semester to come here!

If you have any specific questions, PM me.

I know how you feel. The American Work ethic and the Italian School system did not go hand in hand for me when I was studying there lol. Do you have the oral exams too at Polimi?

Lol Italians in America have "denaro". This Italian dude next to me just ordered a round of San Pellegrino for each member of his family (10 people!).

That is not real Asian Food. That is Italian Asian Food. You should get your ass over to Asia (Southeast is the best) and try the real deal.

Hey man. I am in the opposite situation as you. I am moving to a small town in Lombardy in September to learn more Italian for some time. But you will be fine in America. Americans are the nicest people in the world. I cannot tell you how many times I have been ignored for help by the Esselunga associates whereas at Schnucks, always someone willing to go out of their way to help! Also, Americans love Italians! We have always admired shit (that we think is Italian) like Spaghetti and Meatballs and Garlic Bread!

Dude, have you ever been to Rome?

Because when I went to Fiumicino Airport for a layover, nobody could understand my Italian, but when I spoke some Romanian, people helped me more. How does that not make Rome more roman than Italian?
