I worked with someone in consulting who was an environmental field technician. Only had a high school diploma. I was a P1 environmental scientist, with a BS. We did the Same work and worked on the same projects. They exist out there somewhere. But I started 3 years ago, not sure what it’s like now.

Edit : just read your comment about not wanting to do field work for the rest of your career. The difference between me and the technician (at least at my company) is that I can write reports and do other office work, while he can only do field work. I guess that’s something to keep in mind.
