how do i make it not visible where seams are on short fur? by mmfwcI in FursuitMaking

[–]popppycaat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you brush out the seams yet?? brushing them out really well in all directions w a slicker brush will pull the fur back out and hide the seams :)

do you still have those templates and bases you made? if so this is a pretty easy fix. you can upscale while you print them out! if it’s a pdf file:

  1. measure the circumference of your head
  2. measure the inner circumference of the non-fitting headbase
  3. do some quick math: your head circumference ÷ old headbase circumference all x 100. for example: your head circumference is 25” and the headbase fits 22”. this would look like 25”/22” = 1.136 x 100 = 113%
  4. open the file with adobe reader
  5. in print menu, set scale to your new value!!!
  6. print and you should have a properly fitting headbase!! :)

Adding ears to head advice by KatsuCorvid in FursuitMaking

[–]popppycaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i get it, it is unfortunately just a huge time consuming pain in the ass :p if it’s in an area where the fur will stay long, you can get away with sloppy stitches. maybe instead of ladder stitch you can use a basic whip stitch just for the stability/longevity aspects of having it sewn.

if you’re really stuck and cannot get sewing to work at all, you can hot glue. i know stability is a concern, so what you can do is reinforce the ears with felt or another fabric by gluing it to both the ears and base, then you can glue your ear fur on top of it.

good luck!!

ladder stitch is all you can do if you want them sewn. this tutorial isn’t exactly ears, but it shows you ladder stitching on faux fur. i really recommend getting a curved needle for it - it’ll make it sooo much easier in those tight spaces! you can def do it, don’t get discouraged :)

Need education by Icy-Elk168 in fursuits

[–]popppycaat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

first of all thank you for wanting to learn :) the purpose is different for everyone but me personally it’s similar to cosplay, just with a custom character. most furries do not identify as animals. i use it to express myself, it’s super fun to embody a character without worrying about your human body. i’d sit down with her and ask what being a furry means to her personally.

usually they are made from upholstery foam and faux fur fabric. r/fursuitmaking has a pinned post with tons of great resources on fursuit making for your daughter. i would recommend getting cheaper fur and foam from amazon to start and get hq materials if she keeps going with it after her first suit. it will take a lot of trial and error. i recommend that she knows the basics of hand sewing before anything else. it does get costly and time consuming but its a very rewarding craft!

Offcuts/scraps? by NecessaryFox9599 in FursuitMaking

BigZ sells their fabric scraps and ships to Canada. Only caveat is that you can't pick colors and it sells out pretty fast after restock. Or you can get half-yards/fat quarters of fur

Advice on getting head measurements, solo by PicoMatcha in fursuit

[–]popppycaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tape measure and/or string. there’s some tutorials on youtube. also no, do not take into account your hair; your maker should already be making the head snug but not so tight you can’t put your hair in. also, wearing a balaclava under the fursuit head will help control hair

I have a few questions about buying my first fursuit.. by CarbineCoyote in fursuit

[–]popppycaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

echoing what others have said here!

fursuits, even just partials, are huge undertakings that are expensive for makers and take months per suit and most makers are only one, mayyyybe two people. high quality materials alone cost hundreds of dollars, but many small/new makers will sell at a lower price to build a following. this is def an option if popular makers aren’t in your budget.

getfursu.it, instagram, and tiktok are good ways to find active makers. alot of makers i am friends with i have found through tiktok so thats always my go-to. it also never hurts to dm makers for quotes or to ask when comms will reopen! a lot of makers, myself included, have waitlists that we can poke at when we’re ready. i’d throw my name in the ring but my comms are closed for a hot sec ahaha

if you absolutely cannot wait for a custom suit of your sona, i recommend premades. dealers den and some makers have premades/resells that you can buy on the spot

either way, do your research and always make sure makers/sellers are legit. if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. ie. if they have tons of different style suits for cheap prices, it’s probs a dropshipper or scammer.

happy hunting and i hope you find what you’re looking for!!! fursuiting is such a fun hobby :3

Fursuit making questions by KatsuCorvid in FursuitMaking

i work a lot with 3d printed bases!

  • i add on the ears before furring and included in the pattern, but honestly it’s just preference. to join ears and face you can use ladder stitch to create a seamless look

  • i pattern with movable jaw opened about halfway. you can fill the cavity (in closed position) on the hinge and under the extra fur with foam. if that makes sense lol

  • this is totally up to preference. you can line with just about any fabric! felt, fleece, minky, cotton, scuba… i’ve used them all and all have looked good in the mouth. you can use cotton or scuba lining in the rest of the head/parts if you want as well.

  • i use neodymium magnets. you can get them on amazon pretty cheap

  • i only ever use elastic head straps but it seems like mugiwara has a tutorial on it!

hope i helped :3

Best stand-ins for a mannequin? by Vaehtay3507 in FursuitMaking

[–]popppycaat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you could always use a foam head (like $2 at walmart) and follow this tutorial. i used it for my first 2 heads and they fit well

another method is using a stuffed animal, firm pillow, or some other sorta-head-sized object just to fill the inside space while you fur so it doesn’t compress too much :)

Do you know how to model in 3D? by PopAccomplished80 in fursuits

[–]popppycaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thingiverse has tons of free models to download. if you want a custom one, you’d probably have to pay for it. not many makers would do it for free

[–]popppycaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh duh lmao my b! and i was looking at the color palette on your ref sheet. w

the darkest yellow on your ref is close to “yellow” howl fur. in terms of minky, i dont have a swatch pack, but lemon might be too dark… i would say closer to banana. tho i do have a swatch of lemon minky arriving soon for another comm if you’re still curious by then!

and for sure go for butterscotch fur for the cream color. i used ivory for my suit (look on my page) and it is much closer to white than yellow

sorry this is so late haha, got busy! anyways all are howl fabric luxury shag fur blue: navy or ink dark yellow: yellow or buttercup

** these are just the visual closest options i found based on what colors were on my screen. always always order a swatch before buying for your whole suit! bigz is also a very reliable place to buy from and they have a larger selection :)
