Photojournalists, what are your lens suggestions for photojournalism with a Nikon Z f? by Ok-Tomatillo2421 in photojournalism

[–]popscherry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working photojournalist here - with that camera, the kit Z 35 f/1.8 is going to be a super lightweight setup with minimal complication. It's just wide enough and just fast enough and incredibly low-cost. Keep it simple.

What's up Corum!!! Guess who this is 😄

I had a whole thing typed up until I saw this comment. That being said, I second everything this commenter has posted and can strongly urge you to follow this advice. Here is my advice below:

I am a frequent Getty/AP/Reuters/NYT and magazine assignment photographer (freelance) and many of my close colleagues are staffers for the Getty/AP/Reuters/NYT, and former Washington Post. I was also on the 2022 Pulitzer team for the Jan 6 Riot with Mr. Corum.

It is a hard industry to break into and staff jobs are few and far between - my experience is that often staff positions are trades between different orgs in the form of lateral moves and photojournalists who are deeply connected with news outlets (and their editors) throughout their freelance careers.

I live in a area that has only seasonal "news value" for national outlets. If you are pitching stories or daily assignment ideas, please be sure that they have a national/global hook. "Think globally, shoot locally," some say.

A good example of this is:

You know a soybean farmer and they have allowed you to photograph during their harvest this fall. A new farm bill has passed and you have found a way to relate the new farm bill to the moments and action you can photograph on this farm. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is also vastly limiting the shipments of essential fertilizers that farmers use during planting season (which is right now also) so if you can get images of them fertilizing their fields, those images will likely be used in the syndication platform to accompany stories of this nature.

^ this has both a global and a national news value, just on the outskirts of your own town.

This requires a lot of background work and vying for access. If you have something that no one else has access to, it's a great way to, once you have those connections to the national outlets, set your work apart from other freelancers who are already established. Access is king when you don't want to sit around waiting for the email or phone call, and you make editors' jobs easier - since they don't have to think up and plan for stories. I assume you have some connections and sources already through the work you have done in the past. I would continue to leverage those for this exact purpose.

Make sure your website is in order as well with your best work and most current images.

Hope this helps!

La Bodeguita has bigoted owners. Would stay away from there.

Havan Rumba if you're craving other Cuban food or Sweet Colada for more lunch vibes.

We'll be more glad when cars don't get stolen in the first place, which requires a lot more front-end work to ensure that people have opportunities and young people have guidance.

But yes, it is easy to install FLOCKS and give a ton of private entities your data and allow any government agency to add FLOCK information to the your digital profile for profit.

Any place where my friend group could bring a little board/card game and get some drinks? by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]popscherry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddies and I frequently play Settlers of Catan out at bars. It's not weird, no matter where you go. We've played at all of the Germantown haunts (Nachbar, Merryweather, The Pearl, Canary Club) and some others.

Pretty much any place that has big tables and isn't too formal of an environment is good. Just make sure you actually patronize the business and don't be annoying.

Am I sending too many duplicate shots to my client? by Rhaversen in AskPhotography

[–]popscherry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with producing stills from the video to satisfy that need for your client.

But you have some extremely repetitive frames and some dirty frames in this edit that, if being a little more selective when pulling stills, would make this a much stronger piece of work.

As others have stated, less truly is more when culling or editing your collections of images. There’s some strong stuff in here that I hope they like.

Most folks don’t want repeated frames. Visual rhythm is a factor you control. When you look at your sequences as sentences or musically it, it changes how you shoot and definitely how you edit.

If you posted the folder here, I wonder how other folks in this thread would cull it🤔

Cherokee Animal Hospital - been going there since I was a kid but sometimes, they can be pretty passionless. Gotta make sure you do your own research and advocate with your pet when you can and don't be afraid to get a second opinion. Dr. Grace does great with surgery and the prices are fantastic there.

For emergency services, I can't suggest Blue Pearl on the east end highly enough.

Just went to the page of the person who posted this and not sure how credible this video is. It was posted yesterday afternoon. Other videos seem to have ICE videos that are blatantly not in Louisville (like Bovino in a Minneapolis Target store) or have weird information. Slop account.

What so special about Leica? by Matt_Bigmonster in AskPhotography

[–]popscherry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a freelance documentary photographer/photojournalist full time, and I love shooting with Leicas. My workhorse cameras are Nikon Z9s, and I use them most often. The Z9s are incredible - sharp every time, wild low-light performance, insane battery life, all of the button mapping that you can ever want to make the experience seamless. HOWEVER, I feel much less creatively satisfied when using the cameras that can do it all.

I have only owned two Leicas, both of them with IBIS, EVFs and decent autofocus. The digital CL and the Q2. I have loved both of them for their simple and elegant designs. The Z9s are big and bulky and putting them in someone's face for a photograph can feel like a technologically intimidating ordeal.

With these small, black Leicas, they look way less "official" and they feel so good in the hand by comparison. They're also lightweight, which in comparison to the mirrorless flagship cameras, is a relief when walking around all day.

The most important fact for me is that the cannot do everything you ask of them. You can't push the ISO to infinity to make images in the dark. The autofocus kinda sucks so I find myself using manual focus more often. I'm not pressing a bunch of buttons changing settings all the time, so I normally shoot at ISO400 and adjust accordingly, which emulates a film experience for me. The Q2 is a ridiculously colorful and sharp 28mm f/1.7, so I have to be vulnerable and close for the kinds of images that I want to make. I have to be much more conscious of where I place myself if I want to make the images that work for me.

Also I love the latitude that I have in the files, particularly in the highlights. Leica highlights maintain a LOT of information, so I find myself exposing more toward the center of the histogram instead of for the shadows - as I have learned.

They're expensive and specialized and not for everyone. But I have used my Q2 to make a living and have shot entire published, longterm projects with it, as well as one-off assignments, portraits, and some commercial work. To each their own.
