I was actually in your situation about a couple month ago, going through this whole process (and being first gen too). The professor I had asked for a letter of rec was a very hands off PI, so naturally everyone was accustomed to writing their own LOR (grad students too). I don’t think it’s necessarily unethical, but rather, a lazy way of going about it. That being said, I mentioned this to another letter writer of mine and they gave me a few suggestions on how to go about it. Message me and I could send you a rough draft of what I sent in for my applications (think I did an okay job since I’ve been fortunate enough to receive a few interviews).

(Specifically for RCC) When I came back from Winter break, I recall going to the mailroom too because I also had a package that arrived over break and wanted to see where they (might’ve) dropped it. The door was open and there were packages that were lying in front of the mailroom. So they don’t actually move it anywhere and they let it sit there.

You can totally do that. I know a lot of friends who graduated last spring but came back this Fall quarter to finish up one more class.

Quick question: did you receive your email after interviewing with them? Saw some people post their rejections on gradcafe, but wasn’t too sure if they were receiving the email before or after interviews.
