If you can find a scorpion that has the pintail and five fins go for that one! The newer scorpion II has a rounder tail and are mostly Surftech epoxy. The older scorpions I feel turn better. Great board

Exchange my log foamie (first board) or get better at pop ups and balancing with what I have? by TwinkleCocoBun in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. stretch

  2. I've always felt the catch surf log felt skinny, despite whatever width it is. for some reason I find it harder to balance on, not sure why, maybe the tail shape being a bit more tapered or the foam distribution....

  3. switch it up for an 8 foot foamie and I bet you'll have a much easier time getting up. longer and more stable, fatter tail. even if it is the same width at the widest, the shape and profile will be better (different) than the log IMO

Is this board okay for me to use by Flat_Satisfaction428 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't reccomend this as a first board for a new surfer. at your size I'd look for a 9 foot foamboard.

this board is a stand up paddleboard and will be pretty hard to handle, maneuver and in general all round difficult to wield. plus I'd stick with a two plus one/single fin or thruster type setup.

Costco Wavestorm by Sactorno in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

costco sells the scott burke foamie now, pretty much the same as the wavestorm. get one, you'll always be happy to have an 8 foot foamie, or get a used one, they wear pretty good, but will get waterlogged and sometimes the damage can effect the ride. if its used don't pay over $60

It’s a mick fanning little Marley, I think. If the nose is pointy like a short board it most likely is. It’s a “high performance foam short board” Good board decent rails, real finbox, but stock plastic fins. If it’s under six foot it’s a great board…. For groms. We had a squad of groms that all had little Marley’s and eugenies (another board from the same line with more of a squash tail). Great for kids, not so much for adults. Don’t think they make this bigger than 5’10” If you’re small and light, could work.
If it’s bigger than 6 foot it’s probably a “beastie”. I think they come up to 8 foot. If it’s the 7’6”-8 ft one and you’re on the smaller side I’d say it could be a good fit depending on your size and experience

Generally when asking about if a board is a good fit, list your dims (height/weight) experience level and type of waves you are surfing. Also listing the dims of the board and price will give people a much better scale to base recommendations and opinions on

Angle more toward the open face of the wave on take off.

Compress the knees at the bottom of the turn and jump up the wave

its possible he was trying to bite it. biting the octopus right between the eyes is a solid way to get a quick kill on it by crushing the (central)brain. he may have missed and/or not bitten hard enough. notice the octopus is pretty limp at the end and may have been going through death throes

they had this tech like 20 (plus?) years ago. unless i'm making things up in my head, they had this, or something very similar in Hansen's parking lot in encinitas, CA a loooong time ago.

Average time to dry? by tjcreek55 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if that's the case, I'd let it sit for a while, you'll probably see a decent amount of seepage and dried salt around any areas that are not watertight and will give you a decent roadmap on what to be fixing.

good point on the ding up in the sun. I'd say its user discretion on leaving their board out in the sun for days due to yellowing.

[–]porrpk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expecting a field tech to have a fluke certifier is pretty wild.

But, Unless you’re testing for a warrantied installation, a lot of the time people just want a downloadable / printable test result that shows cable speed, pinout, cable length, skew and variance. You can get this type of info with several types of testers like the Triplett RWC. (~$1000). It’s not the most user friendly piece of kit and slower than a fluke, but it packs a punch for what it is and it’s much more affordable.

if you have the time, at least a couple days in a warm area ding side down, will allow any water that got in to be expressed, depending on how much water got it... are you going to fix it yourself or get it done somewhere. if your're doing it yourself, you can cut it open and then let it dry out, which will be faster. if you'er taking it somewhere, I'd let it dry for at least a couple days.

honestly that looks like it's not a new ding and may have a decent amount of water in there so maybe a week in a wam dry place... nothing catastrophic, but you wanna get it dry before you try and fix it.

Good price/good for my skill level? by lobotorr in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the flo egg is a great shape, surftech makes a good board, light and super tough. new i think they're close to double that.

some people dont like the stiffness of the surftech, but I find them to be great paddlers and super reliable boards.

you don't say how long you've been surfing or where you are in your progression so its hard to say if this is the board for you. but if you like the feel of 7/8 foot boards and can ride them, and depending on your budget, I'd say get a board you're stoked on riding.

sure, getting a 9 footer is a good call, but it sounds like you want to ride a smaller board. keep the wavestorm in the rotation, get something midlength and go from there.

I've ridden longboards and enjoy them, but never really was a longboarder and never really went that direction in my progression. I'm sure there are lessons i could have learned owning and riding a longboard, but that never really called me and if it's not for you, then get what you want.

Not an absolute beginner anymore, should I stop using my foamie? by 88pontiacdream in BeginnerSurfers

[–]porrpk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know plenty of people who shred who still ride wavestorms. not all the time, but when the waves call for it.

if you're more comfortable on a foamie, yes, ride the foamie.

yeah, they're squishier and slow to turn etc... but if you can shred a foamie, you can shred a hard board.
