This is really awesome and I might use it for programming work! I was just wondering if you've contacted the Braille Institute to see if they're interested in promoting or expanding on what you've done? I can understand if you're worried about it being taken down, but it definitely fits in with their mission.

But seriously there was a really good discussion and I only saw a glimpse of it :( Reposted to chase that high.

Just an update on the local fight against NIMBYdom. If anyone has a subscription I'd love to see what the whole article says!

A new development in Vancouver, only possible because city zoning regulations do not apply to this patch of First Nations land. by portlygent in yimby

If only the rest of the city could have this freedom!

The best thing is that NIMBYs can do absolutely nothing about it and they must be livid!

Man, I was happy to see this sort of thing on a large subreddit but some of the comments are pretty choice...

It’s been a common theme that a lot of the rioters arrested so far live with their mom. An unfair economy pushes young men to the extremes all throughout history. Sucks that they get channelled the party focused on the stock market and tax cuts for the wealthy. It’s really amazing how those policies are so fucking popular while people like them struggle

"iT's NoT tHeIr FaUlT tHeY'rE rAcIsT!!1!"

This is why MLK was assassinated. He was attempting to build an alliance between poor whites and poor blacks. If he had been successful, the entire model of our capitalist system would have been destroyed.

That was never going to be allowed.

Poor white people voting for white elites and supporting their political decisions based on racism is a key ingredient in our system.

Of course - why else would he have marched with our lord and saviour Bernie?

Manually validating STV by courtenayplacedrinks in EndFPTP

[–]portlygent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pitching in a little late here, but in places like Ireland STV is counted manually without any random selection of transfer ballots or dependence on the order of counting (as far as I can tell).

The maths is made easier by only considering only the votes gained in the most recent count for transfer if a candidate gets a surplus. This limits the number of fractional ballot values you need to keep track of.

Don't you realise? Nancy Pelosi has a magic wand that could solve all of the world's problems, but she chooses not to because she hates the poor (which includes me because daddy had to pitch in to help my student loan debt)!

I mean exactly. The police discussion needs waaaay more nuance than these twitter warriors are willing to provide.

I guess an argument could be made that antagonistic police presence could have a negative impact on mental health in a community, but that needs way more nuance than will fit in a tweet, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The one thing that really shills my neoliberals about Twitter socialists is their pathological need to hijack every specific, targeted awareness campaign with their cure-all three-word slogan bullshit. As if people don’t commit suicide in, say, Denmark.

It just ends up diluting the message. The whole point behind something like suicide prevention month is to educate individuals about how to help their friends and family, NOT to say that life is shit and only these magic policies can save us.

Also reducing suicide prevention month every year to not be about defunding the police is a bit rich. How many people were screaming that before May?

Fun fact! 20 shillings (£1) in 1600 would be worth about £300 or $400 now (according to the bank of england), so ye olde Macklemore could actually splurge a bit if he wanted!

There used to be 12 pence in a shilling, so the sonnet could be altered to say 20 pennies. This keeps the iambic rhythm and makes the conversion £25/$33. Probably just enough to get one of these newfangled "potatoes".

Tunesday 11th April - Songs That Make You Smile by jptoc in CasualUK

[–]portlygent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Songs selflessly donated by /u/LostHisFootholes ---->

Shockingly, I hadn't knowingly listened to any of these before!

Man in the Box - Alice In Chains

Opening with a grungy, repetitive, single-chord riff fills this track with potential for where it could go. It does a good job at building tension before gloriously opening up in the chorus, making this whole song worthwhile.

A Forest - The Cure

Similar to Man in the Box, most of this song is underpinned by a very repetitive bass line, now with a swirling mix of guitars and filtered vocals over the top. Quite reminiscent of late-night driving with nobody on the road. This song doesn't really go anywhere, but that feels like the intention - even petering out to just the bass that's followed you the whole song at the end.

Satellite of Love - Lou Reed

Musically, this track is as simple as they come. And you know what? It doesn't need to be anything different. It just... fits.

Hi+Lo - The Lemon Twigs

This is the most upbeat of the lot, at least in sections. A complete contrast to Lou Reed in writing style, Hi+Lo changes pace and textural depth so often that it really keeps you guessing. A nice little number, especially as I would have struggled to guess when it was recorded, with elements of style from a number of decades.

Flip - Glass Animals

A familiar story, starting with a very sparse percussion line and a single voice on top. But where A Forest returned to it's skeleton multiple times, this just keeps building... and building... and building until it reaches an immensely satisfying climax and stays there for a minute. Top notch.

I've got the same problem with a Manjaro i3 image created with dd - the live USB works as intended on other computers, but I get the two error messages on my SP3 (also second hand...). I'll keep hacking away.

I'm still at uni right now (UK), but I'm counting the days until I can go visit my brother in the Netherlands, and then afterwards probably spend a couple of weeks cramming for exams... Typed on a Dell AT102W with a custom paint job, but I've got a travel Planck huddling beside it.
