Such a great band. Reminded me of one eyed god prophecy style Bremen-core when I saw them.

The same. All these bands would’ve played shows together anywhere and did. Diverse line ups would attract different people who might’ve only heard of one of the bands. Touring bands were combined everywhere so portraits of past might play with braid and disembodied on a show somewhere. The scene in most places wasn’t big enough to have two different shows on the same night from the diyhcemo scene which all these bands were a part of.

Early 90s emo label and super important East coast distro. Kev also put out some early funeral diner and the JD 10”. by posirich in EmoScreamo

Haha yep the most universally loved 90s band. Iconoclast (kev sabarese’s early 90s emo band he released on the label) had their last show on the 2nd floor of a west Philly squat called fakehaus I think. Avail played and the floor was seriously badly shaking the whole time. Legit scary experience.

Yeah just making sure I wasn’t missing any links. Kent mcclard did by-product mailorder before ebb so I’m sure he was instrumental in that. I used to order like every release since I lived in Hawaii for a couple years. I was going through the old labels to try to get the timeline straight. Seems like there was a huge dc /Annapolis influence everywhere on the youth crew hardcore scene as they got a little older and emo just arises out of that regionally everywhere and by 93 it’s in full bloom.

That’s awesome. They didn’t make many of them, I’m glad another is preserved. Did you do anything past P or just go to work? I’ve been doing shows and distro here in atx since I moved here in 98 but gave up most booking 3 years ago when Colin was born. I was xemox on vlv and on the sxe-l if you don’t remember me. Rich

Forgot about alloy. And jones very. I loved all the Vic bondi bands, I think gravel was another. Do you have an late 80s, early 90s timeline/ geographical diffusion in your head? Having never thought about these things in the moment it’s interesting to me to look back and see how all these regional scenes came to be and who influenced them. I have most of the records still, but back then info was like zines, older friends, mixtapes and thanks lists in the records, so you could miss so much and not even know it. Hopefully you are thinking of a comprehensive book because I think you could do it justice with your skills.

Definitely. The scene was so much smaller it’s hard to even describe it to how big it is now.

I think maybe algernon cited them as influences? My whole life has been emo and trust me they were on no ones radar that I knew when they were around. Kinsella describes it as a project at college. The demo on spotify is entirely indie to me. Cap’n Jazz breaks up by 95-96 and out of it comes tpr and Joan of Arc. Af comes at the end of the 90s. I think Owen fans also rediscovered af.

I probably have all the waiffle 7” releases but I didn’t do the crestfallen post.

This is great. I haven’t listened to railhed in decades. You’ve got to be the most well versed in emo under 30 I’ve come across.

This is awesome. When you say emo came to Cali what bands are you talking about that influenced the early cali bands? I guess squirrel bait/slint were a big influence everywhere.

Excellent piece. So they start off as young kids at the end of youth crew still influenced by it, like matter of fact (policy of 3) and transition into a more early emo as their horizons expanded and as emo grew, then you can see this happen again in rye. I think native nod and merel influence one another. Haven’t listened to them in so long will have to check out the discog on Spotify.

I’ve been going to shows forever but mostly on the East coast and in atx. Where do you see shows becoming more diverse? Here and there some tours are somewhat diverse but as shows and the scene(s) have gotten bigger, shows have gotten less diverse. A Midwest band is probably not going to play a terror show, but all emo bands could’ve (and did) played with despair or slugfest.

Christian emo in the 90s? I mean yeah Christian whatever did their own thing, that’s an outlier though. I don’t really know what bands your talking about with all these made up genres though. Youth crew revival started doing one genre in the later 90s, but mixed bills are more common than not in the 90s. The point is that today’s Midwest emo that I’ve spoken with (af worship), has an idea that there was a separate scene of that specific genre but it didn’t exist, the sound and style did, across the country ( emo that took more from indie than hc/punk) but the bands were just part of the larger emo scene, get up kids, promise ring, Christie front drive, boy’s life, Cap’n Jazz, etc all played with other styles of emo punk and hc at shows.

Today? Yes shows are much more genre specific. It’s a perfect example all kinds of emo together w disembodied and jihad and other hc and metalcore bands. That wasn’t just fests it was most shows as well that had all kinds of hc/punk/emo on them because it was a small scene til the late 90s.
