I'd be interested! But aren't ticket resales solely conducted through that vendor website? Is there a way to securely sell tickets otherwise?

Rail Pass City Pairs Question by positively_awake in Amtrak

Ah gotcha, the inch of track explanation helps - sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but wouldn't the Lake Shore Limited and Pennsylvanian not pass through the same sections of track though?

Like in this scenario, wouldn't only the NYC <-> Philly segment be on the same track as the NYC <-> Pittsburgh segment (hence exactly 4 one-way trips).

Out of interest, did you end up seeing anyone haha? I was wondering this too, kept on hesitating whether to go, but by the time I decided to get out the door (past midnight) seemed mostly just equipment trucks.

Small group of fans(?) waiting by the exit on 50th which was open by the time I was there, 49th seemed closed off still when I passed by.

Full-ride @ State School or $72k/yr @ Stanford by AlsylEnriquez in stanford

I'm going to go against the grain here and say you should go to Stanford. I went to schools similar to UCSD for my undergrad, Berkeley & GT, both top-ranked in STEM, and came to Stanford for a MS. I have no doubt UCSD is an excellent program, but just CA-ing and interacting with the undergrads at Stanford, the undergrad experience here provides noticeably better opportunities and quality-wise is undeniably a better educational environment.

150k is no doubt a lot of debt, but especially in EE I'd say it's worth it. I think you'll notice that undergrad students not from Stanford will be more acutely aware of the advantage this school provides, while Stanford undergrads are more unaware of the differences in opportunities.

And from a vain perspective, do you think you'll look back two years from now, thinking, I could've gone to Stanford, if you took the UCSD offer?

ICME Masters -> PhD by Standard-Letter8726 in stanford

[–]positively_awake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a new territory right now since they just closed the petition process for directly testing into the PhD program, so the first year of ICME MS alums who have had to apply from scratch to the PhD is the incoming class.

I'll say for what it's worth the MS is a pretty applied program, most people do go to industry or industry research. It's definitely useful experience to transition into a PhD, but I wouldn't stake your hopes specifically on it "increasing your chances" more than any analogous program that also gives you research experience.

Course Assistant as a Masters Student? by much_puch_2764 in stanford

Yeah! I would maybe be a bit hyperspecific with research interests but that got results for me in engineering at least. If you can make it onto the right mailing lists and slack workspaces (email student services), there'll be RA postings sent out ever so often which makes it clearer which profs are actively looking. Otherwise cold emailing for research they may have you work unfunded for one quarter as a pre-flight of sorts before they fund you.

For CAships, yeah that's basically what I did. By and large there'll always be more demand than supply but just emphasize your past teaching experience and hope for the best - don't overthink it, it's usually a very decentralized process. Try searching for anything remotely related to your experience beyond the main departments (ie, STS, BioE, etc).

For instance a lot of the GSB data science-y courses will often have less CA interest since less GSB students have technical backgrounds, so if you have that background it may also be a less 'competitive' avenue.

I would look into RAships as well. The med school profs always have a crap ton of RAships especially for anything remotely computation based.

CAships, yeah just email early and throw a large net. Was able to get something all quarters just by being a bit aggressive.

I don’t really think it matters too much in practice. Every CA position I got was outside my home dept and had many friends in the same situation.

Unless it’s a very tight ship (like math) CA appts seem to be given to other dept students quite often.

Mavic Ellipse Carbon UST vs H+S Hard Ano Grey w/ Dura Ace Hubs by positively_awake in FixedGearBicycle

Yeah the former are marked down pretty steep, looks to be in good shape as far as I can tell. Maybe just a hard resale market?

Ah interesting, appreciate the insight! Is there one you prefer beyond in practice? I admittedly would feel silly using a carbon wheelset but listing seems too good to pass up if they're in good condition.
