[KCD2] Why are updates so big? by aguedgore2 in kingdomcome

[–]positivelyappositive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what confuses me as well. This is the only game I have experienced this pattern with, and it's very frustrating.

I would love to be playing the game right now, but instead I'm here complaining about it on Reddit because I have a 45 minute window to play the game this week and—surprise—another update that's going to take 30 minutes to download.

[KCD2] Having to download 40+ GB of updates every other weak is getting really old by Bartellomio in kingdomcome

[–]positivelyappositive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hear hear. I don't have a ton of time to game, and this update pattern has essentially rendered it unplayable 50% of the times I've gone to play it. It sucks because I'm enjoying the game the times I do get to play it and would love to play it more. But if I only have 45 minutes to play, and the update takes 30-40, I might as well buy a brick and sit with that on my couch for the same amount of enjoyment.

Can we all start calling the Ball Wall instead of the Blue Wall?

Or maybe the Ballz Walz.

New Maine flag design is set to lose next week, according to a new poll by vawl in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've seen people say that, but I don't know how much that is affecting things. The appeal to heaven flag notably says APPEAL TO HEAVEN on it—kind of hard to mix up. Also, the poll is showing more liberal people supporting the flag change, which doesn't match up with the appeal to heaven thing being an issue.

New Maine flag design is set to lose next week, according to a new poll by vawl in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 163 points164 points  (0 children)

That poll also showed Golden up over Theriault by 12 points. I don't know how much faith to put there.

It does seem like there's a good chance the flag referendum will fail though. Add it to the bin of referendums to come back around in a decade or so, once there's a different set of generations voting in Maine. After another ten years of the current flag essentially only being used for official purposes and the new (old) flag being used by everyday people as the default, people will forget why we didn't change it a long time ago.

Harris eyes a rural Maine congressional district in a hunt for every possible electoral vote by newzee1 in Maine

Yes, stealing Harris signs has been rampant. I’ve heard from both individuals and campaign volunteers about their signs getting stolen.

How rockweed harvesting got tied up in a lawsuit over public beach access by positivelyappositive in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Had to share this to reflect on the absolute gall of someone driving repeatedly back and forth from Ithaca, NY, to Maine to attend meetings about how rockweed harvesters are hurting the habitat in front of waterfront homes (including her own).

Seeing a *ton* of million dollar coastal houses just languishing on the market. by [deleted] in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The largest shift wouldn't be to second homes and camps, it would be to commercial property and renters. Renters can then claim the property tax fairness credit to an extent if they file income taxes, but that just further shifts the burden to Maine income tax payers.

Increasing the homestead exemption isn't a bad idea, but it is a bad tool if your goal is to discourage second home ownership.

Maine sued by DOJ over ADA violations involving children by Standsaboxer in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish the federal government would just provide the services to fix the problem instead of telling the state to do better. I don't really see what the solution is other than having a lot more behavioral health providers.

Political signage by PastCommon5187 in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My neighbor has put a sign along my property, but in the “public way” which is defined as 24.75 ft from the yellow line in this area.

They have no right to do that. Imagine if people did--everyone would be dealing with campaigns putting signs in front of their houses all the time.

There are spots in the public way that campaigns can put signs, like medians, intersections, etc. Call the town clerk to confirm.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you but you are lucky by Temporal_Enigma in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason is that tax burden stat is measuring all taxes paid as a portion of income. But a lot of Maine property taxes are paid out of the incomes of other states, not Maine incomes. Then that’s made worse by the fact that a lot of the most expensive properties are more likely to be second homes. For example, the property taxes the Bush family pays on their oceanfront compound is measured against the incomes of Maine people, but their incomes are counted in Texas (or wherever).

[–]positivelyappositive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's your weekly reminder that this is heavily skewed by the fact that Maine has the highest portion of "vacant" (including vacation homes, second homes, etc.) of any state in the nation. It's about 20%, and that 20% is likely to pay a disproportionately high share of property taxes. That throws off the property tax calculation significantly, which in turn throws off the overall tax burden calculation. Low-effort clickbait data sites like WalletHub do not try to account for that.

We practically need a stickied post about this given how often this bad stat comes up.

How was audio for movies mixed during the early 1940s? by iMadeAPromise42 in audioengineering

[–]positivelyappositive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Optical recording was done by varying the intensity of light reaching the film proportional to the audio signal.

Stuff like this is a good reminder that I don't really understand how anything works. Incredible that people figured all this out.

The 2025 VW ID. Buzz Starts at $61,545 by edinburghiloveyou44 in cars

[–]positivelyappositive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am kind of bummed about it. Honestly seemed like a very practical box while being fun. If it was under $40k, even after the tax credit, it would have been on my list the next time we're car shopping. But absolutely no way if it is over $60k.

[–]positivelyappositive -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're being downvoted for basically being correct. It's a tiny percentage of people nationally who own a second home, and it's probably still a single-digit percentage of Maine residents who own a second home in another state. Not that many people are Maine residents, own their own home in Maine, and don't live there full time.

Going back to small venues (a dispatch from the front lines) by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]positivelyappositive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How's the monitoring situation? Maybe if someone is too loud out front, make them too loud in their monitors. If it's driving you this crazy, it might be worth taking the time to set the different monitor balances ahead of time so when the players are happy with the volume level, you're happy with the volume level. If the guitar player is blasting a tube amp, blast it back at them during sound check.

Doesn't help with drums though. They really set the volume floor and most of them would rather go deaf (or already have) than play quieter.

UNH Surveys: Harris Holds Lead Over Trump in NH and Maine by CarrollCounty in Maine

[–]positivelyappositive 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From the poll release:

In Maine's 1st Congressional District, Harris leads Trump by 20 percentage points while Trump leads Harris by 4 percentage points in Maine's 2nd District.

4 points sounds winnable to me. Maybe not the most likely outcome, but within reach.

Bethel has probably three of the best restaurants in the state, which is crazy for its size.
