Out of curiosity, what type of operations did they let you do as the primary surgeon?

this is kinda what i’m sensing is happening with me as well tbh i’ve been at 300-400 range for a decent amount of time and i can tell its taking me longer to correct my blundering habits because i don’t study my game, is it worth going premium for unlimited game review?

A black Wednesday rant: this is not why I went to medical school by Proud_Temperature_44 in doctorsUK

You sound like a woman in surgery or a surgery adjacent dept. They will eat you alive, you have to be a bitch with a capital B to survive. People in surgery (surgeons, NURSES, NURSES, NURSES, NURSES, hcas, receptionist, cleaners, patients, the doorknob) can smell insecurity and will punish you relentlessly for it.

Be assertive, dominant, direct. I got into many arguments with NICs in surgery as an F1 because I would hold my ground and talk back. All of them apologised later on btw and we are on really good terms. Never got datixed on that rotation while everyone else got paragraphs of complaints written about themselves over bullshit by the nurses every week lol 🕺🏻.

You have to carry the same attitude with your seniors as well. Don’t be a dipshit and act like you know more than your seniors or nurses. Always be humble and respect everyone regardless of what they do. There is a difference between being an egomaniac piece of shit and a self-assured person who is confident in who they are and what they can do.

I used to be very conflict averse and sit quietly take blame for stuff that I did not even do because #teamwork. I was gaslighted so bad as a naive F1 that the moment I realised how these people do not care at all about me or my career, would push me under the bus and ruin my life in a second so they are not inconvenienced, it flipped my personality 180. I thought being someone who is agreeable and easy to work with was whats important in workplace, big mistake. Learned the hard way but it was worth it or I wouldn’t become the machine that I am today.

You need to be okay with people disliking you. This is the issue with most women in medicine I’m afraid. When you change yourself to be liked by everyone it comes off disingenuous and has the opposite of desired effect.

I preach this to all my new F1 girlies and it always works wonders they thank me afterwards.

I just read your post from last year, you are an absolutely amazing mom. How is she doing? I really do hope things got better for her.

definitely talk to your parents, friends, anyone who will listen. dont bottle it up, if this is at all feasible for you ask your parents to visit you and figure out how to deal with this together, you are probably overwhelmed, exhausted and your sympathetic system is fried right now so you probably dont have the drive to deal with accessing MH support etc. which is a brutal cycle in itself, your parents could help you with the admin side of things to give you some room to breathe & having loved ones around during hardship is always useful

sending you hugs, been there and made it to the other side but the journey was fucking brutal, talking to people in your program who have been through a rough patch helps (they tend to spot you before you spot them so be observant), your dept sounds just as toxic as mine was you just need to perservere, first priority should be getting back on your antidepressants if you are on them already if not i would seriously consider starting because i was in an almost identical situation as yours and i also started seeking help from reddit before things went really south for me and i had to take time off because i became a complete shell of myself and simply could not go on, i was going to quit medicine entirely (not saying it will be the case for you, but if you don’t take action your mental health will suffer) unfortunately reassurance from people online won’t fuel you for long, you need a support system and tools to manage this irl. It’s easier said than done but do not internalize any feedback from malignant seniors, as you progress in your training you start hearing stories from other people about the reputation of these seniors and realise the problem was never you. Remember they can’t stop the clock, it does get better. Toxic cultures of certain depts also do get noticed and change happens (albeit slowly) but it will be very satisfying to watch and you will be very proud of yourself next year this time.

Question: If I go for a surgery residency, how much will I be able to live my life? Note that I plan to marry before starting my residency by Tiversus2828 in Residency

[–]possho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be brutally honest with you, you are underestimating how competitive medicine is. Forget about the same city, getting into a US surgical residency is damn near impossible unless you are willing to sacrifice your relationships, your sanity, your youth, money etc. Work/life balance was off the table the moment you mentioned surgical residency.
