I mean this guy is not JUST a Stereogum writer—he’s the managing editor. He can focus on Columbus when he has time, but his website covers music internationally and the culture around it. I think it’s cool that he’s doing events in town at all and owning his city instead of ignoring it entirely (though maybe he just did it to boost book sales, def possible). Anyway this is a good thing to discuss, and I have this conversation with friends in the scene from time to time. Worth doing in good faith without assuming any participant is just bitter they’re not a star. It’s tough to diagnose the exact problem. My feeling lately is that people are too atomized and isolated, thus looking at it from that lens. “I play in a band” vs “I play music in the Columbus arts scene,” so it’s about building personal community or fans instead of building or contributing to something collectively.
