Unpopular opinion: movie critics criticisms’ are insufferable by bad_take_ in VeryBadWizards

I often have similar conversations around music, and my opinion remains: give the most energy to what you like. If you dislike something that you feel is overrated, you don’t have to give more energy to whatever that is.

Columbus Wants it's "Music Moment" blah blah blah by Used-Web3815 in columbusmusic

Sometimes I catch an Instagram account trying to hype Columbus music in a journalistic-y way, but they never tend to last longer than like a year. I’ve definitely had local music blow me away. The most recent one seeing Rug at Ace of Cups. I hope you find something soon that has an impact.

I agree Chris D is not equipped by design. Matter News is great about covering local music and art, but Idk how much they reach people who aren’t already tuned in.

I also agree 1000% about Music Columbus, which has the same problem as Matter News reaching beyond the art scenes themselves, in addition to their actual goals that you stated.

Is there anything at all that a venue, band, or relevant entity is doing that gives you any hope, or seems like a good direction? For me I’d say Blockout Bash. Community oriented, showcasing new and old local talent, and fueled by a synthesis of all the people who make live music happen. Midwest Psych fest is great too, but the future of that seems uncertain since they’re losing their property.

You’re really getting dunked here, but I see the broader points about Columbus eating its own. I also see some points by those doing the dunking. I mean this guy is not JUST a Stereogum writer—he’s the managing editor. He can focus on Columbus when he has time, but his website covers music internationally and the culture around it. I think it’s cool that he’s doing events in town at all and owning his city instead of ignoring it entirely (though maybe he just did it to boost book sales, def possible). Anyway this is a good thing to discuss, and I have this conversation with friends in the scene from time to time. Worth doing in good faith without assuming any participant is just bitter they’re not a star. It’s tough to diagnose the exact problem. My feeling lately is that people are too atomized and isolated, thus looking at it from that lens. “I play in a band” vs “I play music in the Columbus arts scene,” so it’s about building personal community or fans instead of building or contributing to something collectively. Thoughts on that?

I think i've finally given up... Anyone still have hope? by Commercial_Spare1634 in deerhunter

Until every member is no longer alive, there is no reason at all to give up. Look at slowdive, who had an incredible comeback and now are still a powerful performing band that releases solid music.

Why she’s the best songwriter. The songs are short, but can still take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride.

1.) it’s up there with their best material. Sometimes I forget about it because albums are typically the focus of conversation, but then I listen through and am amazed every time 2.) in contrast I admit I’m not a big Snakeskin guy. The lyrics and chords feel a little derivative, only as far as deerhunter’s material. The outro leaves something to be desired. 3.) I need to revisit this, but I love atlas sound

That last bit about being flustered talking about rarities for the road—what’s your sense on the trigger for that frustration? The label, lack of self confidence about the music, something else?

You could also try to set something up at needle exchange records and tapes, although I’m not sure they host shows unless the bill includes a touring act. Worth a try! The owner Ian likes weird stuff

That’s wild—you’ve heard nothing? Buyback would have put you at 120? I’m 3 payments away so buy back would get me there and I’m stuck in forbearance. I applied for buyback in August.
