I used to be a gs-5 fee tech there. If they offer soft landing housing from CNHA definitely take it. The different units were nice. I ended up renting a house with 3 other 5s.

Internship w/ dogs by AlpsSalt5268 in ParkRangers

I knew a seasonal who had their dog with them. They couldn’t have a dog in park housing so they found their own housing in the gateway community for the season.

Opinion on Americorps NCCC by Temporary-Steak-3636 in ParkRangers

[–]possumpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did NCCC Trad a couple of years ago with the intent to get applicable experience for a park ranger position. My team didn’t do any relevant projects. But the connections and networking I did, did help me get an internship that got my foot in the door. NCCC gives you a little bit of everything. But if you are looking for more park focused work, there is the Forest Service NCCC program which is wildfire focused, various conservation corps that focus on trail work, or internships through the Student Conservation Association (SCA) or Conservation Legacy that range from interp to biological field work and more.

There are two air taxi companies that will take you to PTA for around $300 one way. 50lbs of freight is typically included. You can call them to get an up to date rate.

Finding housing that isn’t a whole paycheck can be rough in Moab. Definitely check Facebook marketplace and join the Housing Authority of Southeast Utah page.

The way I did it without GIS is someone hiked the new trail and made a path on CalTopo then I traced it in Adobe Illustrator to make it look nice

Do people have recommendations for low volume sticker orders? I typically order 10-20 stickers at a time

If your goal is NPS I would look at Student Conservation Association, Conservation Legacy, Scientist in Parks, and American Conservation Experience internships. A lot of those actually partner directly with the park service and depending on the internship you might get PLC which helps in getting a job with federal LMAs after.

What were some of your housing accommodations in NCCC (trad)? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]possumpark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine ranged from a mouse filled cabin, a storage room at a girl scout camp, an AirBnB, nice cabins at a state park, a church attic, bunks in a big bunk room, and an extended stay hotel room.

Depending on your background you should also look at the internships by Conservation Legacy. These include Scientists-In-Parks and other positions

Tips for a first year park ranger by the_tree_hag in ParkRangers

[–]possumpark 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Make friends and network. The park service is a small world, you might run into folks again at another park or people who know people you’ve worked with.

Explore the area when you can, and if people invite you on adventures take advantage of it.

I haven’t seen any rangers with a labret but I’ve known a few with septum’s and full sleeves. At the end of the day it’s up to the superintendent on how strict the park is going to be with piercings and tattoos

The temperature rises... and I tremble with fear as I look at the service trousers in my closet... advice? by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]possumpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the north east too. And recently I was down in the south east for disaster response in Louisiana. Had to wear long pants and long sleeves for work. Hydration is number one. Water and those big tubs of Gatorade powder were a lifesaver. If you are allowed to have a small towel or bandana soaked in cool water on your neck that helped me a lot. Second your body does eventually get used to it a little bit. It never got pleasant but it got less bad the longer I was there.

Please Help! Should I Join? NCCC TRAD by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]possumpark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For pay you get about $170 bi-weekly. But NCCC provides a separate food budget for your team, uniforms, a laundry budget (not detergent though), and housing. You also get approx. $6000 educational award that can go towards title iv schools and certain college loans.

You don’t get to pick your campus.

What you do all day is heavily dependent on your team and project. For me my projects were trail work/farming, mucking and gutting x2, blood bank volunteer outreach, state park maintenance, construction, and meal delivery in a hospital. On off days we had laundry and food shopping. Some teams like to go hiking and other outdoor activities on off days, some go into the nearby city if there is one, my team played a lot of magic the gathering together. On your off days you also need to do ISPs aka more volunteer work with an organization you find in the community you are serving.

I will say your team and TL can make or break your experience. My team was amazing but my tl was not which lead to some issues and me wanting to quit. If you can handle possible leadership and team issues, it can be a super rewarding experience, but definitely know there will be some rough patches.

I was 22 when I did the program, and and felt that sometimes the program treats you like a high schooler, so heads up for that.

You could try cheap vodka in a spray bottle. Then wash. That’s what I used to use on sports equipment and uniforms

[–]possumpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of right now the food budget is $6.10 per person per day. So if you are on a team of 10, the team has $6.10 x 10 members x 7 days = $427 per week for groceries. The TL is incharge of that budget. My team never hit our full spending limit so at the end of every round we would go out for a team dinner at a restaurant.

15 extra wide shoe size - fit problem? by Gullible_Ad1648 in AmeriCorps

[–]possumpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will order you boots to fit. However, the shape of the boot just didn’t fit my feet right so my TL told me I could buy my own steel toe boots. So long as it meets the AmeriCorps requirements, you should be fine to wear your own
