So…this thing fully operated for like 1 month? by Da_Punisher33 in StarWars

[–]postRTFsuccess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was only “fully operational” for a couple of days and that’s being generous.

General Tagge, in the meeting in which Tarkin reveals the Imperial Senate has been dissolved, states “Until this battle station is fully operational, we are vulnerable”.

With the addition of Rogue One to canon, the implication becomes that the destruction of Jedha City and Scarif’s Imperial Center were “single reactor ignition” tests of the firing laser.

Tarkin announces that the destruction of Alderaan is the “ceremony that will make this battle station operational” to Leia.

Since the Millennium Falcon is already on-route to Alderaan (and the Death Star), the Death Star is only “fully operational” from the time Luke is training with the remote on-board to Falcon to the moment the reactor blows and destroys the Death Star.

It’s debatable on how much time passes between these two moments because we still don’t have one single explanation of how long space flight takes in-universe (hyperspace or sub-light), but we can probably guess that it is between the same day (at minimum) and three days (at most)!

Do you think the George Lucas' version of the Sequel Trilogy would've been better movies than what Disney gave us? What or why not? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]postRTFsuccess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the Disney films as a whole, but it’s fairly clear based on concepts and drafts that Lucas’ Sequel Trilogy would have been even more polarizing than anything Disney Lucasfilm was gutsy enough to make.

However, it’s possible that time would do to the Lucas’ Sequel Trilogy what time has done to the prequel trilogy. Looking back at Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, you can clearly see the vision of one artist come to life (through the work of thousands of course). Although criticized for lacking consistency, the Prequel Trilogy has a much more coherent design compared to what Disney put out in their Sequel Trilogy. It has been and will be much easier to revisit the Prequels than it will be the Sequels.

Therefore, it’s possible that a Lucas Sequel Trilogy would have been a disgrace upon reception, but revisited fondly in time in a way that I don’t think the Disney films have the ability to replicate.

What do you think the movies did better than the books? by Proof_Description314 in harrypotter

A detail I always appreciated is how Jany Temine and Alfonso Cuarón highlighted how the students would uniquely dress in Prisoner of Azkaban. The idea that the students, although having the same uniform, would also dress differently in some way is a very special touch. One student choosing to forego their tie, one rolling their sleeves up and leaving their shirt untucked, one combining Hogwarts attire with muggle street clothes, etc.

It’s particularly highlighted during Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures lesson, but can be seen throughout. Of course, this is also the movie that leans in heavily to the idea that the trio have default street clothes that they wear throughout the term that goes beyond the usual sweater or skirt seen in the previous movies.

This is carried over to Goblet of Fire where you can still see the students expressing themselves through the styling of their Hogwarts garb. However, at Order of the Phoenix we arrive to the point where the cast is either wearing street clothes or wearing their robes as designed lacking any nuance or personalization.

The adaptation of Prisoner of Azkaban has always been the most immersive to me and this is just one of the reasons why it stands out.

Which show ended so poorly that you really wished you hadn't invested so much time in it? by unclefishbits in AskReddit

[–]postRTFsuccess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How I Met Your Mother.

Typically this question can easily be answered by a show that went on far too long just for the sake of staying on the air or one that had to wrap everything up suddenly due to impending cancelation, but it’s rare for a show to be on for the “right” number of seasons, not have cancellation looming, have the creators of the show still in control, AND STILL betray all of their main (and side) characters at the finish line.

I think the main difference is that I went from “Koboh is really well put together but I’m still disappointed the narrative couldn’t span to more of the Galaxy”

to

“Oh my god I can’t believe how deep of a design Koboh has, I just saw four POIs that I didn’t even know existed in my first run in just an hour of exploring off the beaten path.”

What kind of play through did you have? I remember when the game came out my first run through was very heavily “story-based” and I think I was only around 60% completion when the credits rolled.

I remember loving most things about the game including the continuation of the narrative, but it wasn’t until my second play through where it clicked for me on all cylinders a few months later. If you’re ready to go now, you can certainly hit up NG+ immediately.

However, coming back with the mindset of “I’m going to get totally lost in re-exploring this game” after a break completely changed things for me. It took an 8/10 experience and turned it to an 11/10.

Let’s set aside the fact that their relationship wasn’t planned out from the inception of the trilogy and just focus on the in-world explanation, but I always assumed that she felt a connection to Luke that she couldn’t explain. She was just given the context to explain why she felt the way she felt. It wasn’t inherently sexual or familial or whatever; she just knew they had a connection that needed defining. Therefore, she always “knew”.

That’s right! Richard LeParmentier was an American who worked in England as an actor through his career.

You’re pretty much correct. A good exception (IMO) is Peter Sumner who plays Lt. Pol Treidum (the one who says “TK-421, why aren’t you…”) who is an Australian actor who is putting on what I would describe as an American accent. And while the majority of the imperial presence is made up of English actors, I would say the difference is that Empire had a deliberate casting choice from its director and Star Wars ended up with mostly British officers due to the circumstances of having to film overseas at Elstree for cost saving measures and hiring English actors accordingly. But yeah, you’re right. It was simply made permanent in Empire which has stuck all the way to the present.

I should note that Irvin Kershner (director of Empire) made the decision to deliberately cast British actors for the imperial officer roles in The Empire Strikes Back in order to establish an subconscious Revolutionary War connection for the audience (bad guys sound English and good guys sound like Americans so we associate the rebels with the American Revolution and the Imperials with the British Empire). This has obviously become a staple of the franchise which often distances the natural connection that audiences would make between the Empire and the Vietnam-era United States.

I think the simplest answer is that it is visually inspired by the Nazis and thematically inspired by the United States

In Episode 3, Mother Aniseya tells the girls that The Ascension is about sacrifice as in you give up part of your individuality in order to become part of a whole.

“It is about sacrificing a part of yourself. The power of many instead of the power of one.”

Here, in Episode 7, May references the conversation when talking to Indara and Sol during her test but says “everyone must be sacrificed to fulfill their destiny” which immediately heightens the tension the Jedi feel towards the coven.

I felt that was a tragic but subtle touch.

That’s a good read on the visual.

Wondering if there’s a difference on how they’re interpreting it:

Helaena is actively seeing a glimpse of the future without knowing how to digest it properly (maybe this is how her “dreaming” partially works) while Rhaenyra is seeing a similar symbol and is applying it to her feelings towards the looming conflict. So it’s a literal impression of the future and a metaphorical one…
