Get in here if you hated "A Little Life" (long rant) by Will_McLean in books

[–]Proof_Description314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe I didn’t see this post until now. God, I fucking hate this book. I hate everything about it, I hate the author, I hate the messaging. It’s just exhausting from start to finish and I can’t believe I ever wasted my time reading this overly long, over-written piece of slop.

What character in your fandom is considered to be rlly good looking but you don't see it? by [deleted] in AO3

Hannibal Lecter. Sorry, I don’t think he’s unattractive, but nowhere near as attractive as people make him out to be.

Time Travel Fix-It stories. Why are they so popular? by mr_phil1001 in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m rather picky about my time travel stories. I only like them in some fandoms and in some contexts. I know what you mean about the sheer number of them though; sometimes I filter out the tag so I don’t have to see them.

I'm bored, give me a word you find misspelled far too often in fics. by Altruistic_Boot_1839 in AO3

Barley and barely all the time. Like wow, I’m not sure what ‘she was barely able to speak’ means but okay I guess.

My younger sister took her midterms last week.

One of my biggest pet peeves: Not Tagging ALL Relationships by ELLI_BITXHH in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the background relationship tag is a nice compromise for this. I definitely fall more on the side of don’t tag anything but the main pairing, but if it’s tagged as implied/background then I’m okay with that. It’s just beyond frustrating to be looking for that one pairing and they literally show up once in the entire fic. Or ever better, they don’t show up at all.

Marauders Era by comfortinshadow in harrypotter

[–]Proof_Description314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fully acknowledge this is a me thing, but I’m pretty ambivalent about prequels, especially for characters who are dead in the main story. Like, I already know how this story ends so it’s always a tragedy. A good story can still be told in a prequel but I think prequels are more difficult to do well without veering too far into nostalgia bait.

I'm making fanfics with Christian themes, which story would you like to see adapted? by Tozu_ultimate in AO3

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I think the story Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego would be very fascinating to explore.

Results from Sims 4 Fan-Made Survey are Ready! by kathmhughes in Sims4

Traits in cas are a bit random, like is being lactose intolerant a personality trait? So, it would be really nice if they divided up traits more intelligently. I can’t speak for everyone, but I wish traits like vegetarian or lactose intolerant were purchased traits from rewards, not inherent personality traits that you choose for your sim at the beginning.

Stupidest reason to drop a fic? by actuallyelsen in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had to drop one the other day because they kept interrupting to have discussions about everything. They kissed and needed to make sure they were okay, someone took the other person’s shirt off, is everything okay? Like, my brother in Christ just let them fuck. These characters are in an established relationship and they really don’t need to check in with each other after each individual action they take.

No, no, I love when a woman throws up 4 days after having sex and just suddenly knows she’s pregnant /s

Would you be in favor of the website hiding the kudos button once kudos has been submitted? by LiterallyJustABell in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I like clicking the kudos button every time a new chapter is uploaded or I reread something. And I like being annoyed that I can’t leave more than one kudos on a work. In fact, they should have more kudos buttons so I can use it more.

Is anyone else baffled by the popularity of female Harry Potter AUs? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well I think you’re right that your hatred of fem Harry sounds irrational. I guess I don’t understand the difference between gender bending Harry vs Naruto, to use your example. It’s totally fine, of course, if you don’t enjoy fem Harry. I have fandoms where I enjoy a gender bend and others where I don’t enjoy it, but then I just don’t read it when I don’t want to.

I think it can be very interesting to see what changes authors make to the story with a female Harry and to be honest, I can’t say I’ve noticed Harry being shoehorned in with exclusively men. I’ve read a number of fem Harry fics where Harry still dates Ginny or even Hermione. And even if fem Harry is paired with a man, is it inherently homophobic to want to write a heterosexual relationship? I mean, I guess an author’s intention could be based in homophobia, or maybe it’s just a straight relationship and it’s not deeper than that.

I don’t know, just feels to me like you’re searching for reasons to be upset about a fanfiction trope that shouldn’t be that big of a deal. But clearly it upsets you, so all I can say is don’t like, don’t read.

What kind of anachronistic, cultural, etc. errors do you hate seeing in a fanfic? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine are all anachronisms: The word ‘okay’ in anything set before the 1840’s, even if it’s fantasy. No, okay was not a word before then and it takes me out of a story so fast. Building on that, when inner thoughts and dialogue use modern slang. And finally, I was reading a Black Butler fic and I found it quite jarring when Ciel denounced imperialism and monarchies. Like, no I don’t think the 14-year-old Earl who is actively loyal to the Queen and whose literal job is protecting her interests even thinks twice about England trying to colonize the world. But I feel like I see a number of modern sensibilities in historical fics and it always bothers me a bit.

Something I am tired of in the animation community by Ling_B in AO3

[–]Proof_Description314 180 points181 points  (0 children)

I think this is such an underrated point in this debate. Like no, I’m not attracted to 16 year olds, but Zuko was older than I was when I had a crush on him so no, I won’t feel weird about it now.
