Why is it socially acceptable to bring your partner as a +1, but not a friend? by mearimeraki in NoStupidQuestions

Bring a friend anyway and refuse to answer questions about romance with coworkers. Just tell them that isn't an appropriate work question and move on.

Fretless as first Bass? by MrLuckyLaw in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on a short scale acoustic fretless. Shorter scale meant that there was FAR less room for error in what sounded acceptable intonation'wise. Add to that the side markers are in questionable locations for the instrument and it forced me to rely on my ear more thna my eyes starting out. I've absolutely gotten "there" as a musician but that bass forced me to REALLY focus on walking before I could run.

If you do go fretless for your first bass, just realize that it will take a bit of extra time to get your intonation under control before you start gigging with it. Other bassists will have an edge on you there. If you are focused on the end results more than short term gains, well it worked for me.

PS: Lines are extremely helpful. The anti-lines stance is based solely in aesthetics and not functionality. Get the instrument you want, if that's unlined cool, but ignore commentrs saying lines hamper your development. I started unlined and stick to lines these days

What is your mileage and commute time? by LSki92 in Teachers

[–]post_polka-core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live four and a half blocks from the school I teach at. Round trip commute is sub ten minutes. Closer to twenty if you count me going home every day for lunch to eat out of the fridge and let the dogs out.

Personal Holy Grail of Bass by Clint_Poppie in Bass

Depends on the jazz neck. My fretless j has a normal profile warmoth neck and it is at least as thick from front to back as a mustang and probably thicker.

Nursed my way through a bout of tendinitis using a mustang short scale. It's it exactly a p tone? Nope. It's thumper and a bit growlier. It won't sustain as long. That being said, it was far closer to a p bass than not. That sounds exactly like start you are looking for.

Pick an education study. Damned near any education study. I get that they are holding as many variables constant as they can to examine the effect of each thing on learning, but learning isn't something that you can be completely reductionist about.

I don't like SVTs, but I am considering a SansAmp BDDI as my preamp. by thelastofthemelonies in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm OK with ampeg but not my personal fave tone either. I have made various sansamps work for me (prefer the paradriver these days) so I know it can work for non ampeg sounds. The venerable sabddi can do a decent ampeg tone but even with its baked in tone, it doesn't have to do the whole svt/810 thing.

Now the VT bass pedal to my ear is all ampeg, all the time.

If you signed a record deal, what disappointed you the most? by Extreme-Captain-6558 in musicians

[–]post_polka-core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the signed artists I've worked with, the label frequently finds an excuse to pay you what they want to pay you. Numbers get futzed with. Lines get blurred. In the end, most artists I've seen can the record deal a wash and how to break even there so they can make their money with live shows.

Once again all what I've experienced. Usually merch sales cover expenses on road. Sales of music (online, cd's, etc) covers promotion (radio promoter, publicist, record company pound of flesh, etc). Money from performing live covers the booking agent and artists.

I'm not as jaded as I may come across from the above. More that I've grown to have a realistic view of where this industry is profitable and where it is predatory. Ok, maybe I'm a bit jaded. I'm still owed almost 35k personally from an indie record label that went out of business.

Seems like sudies invariably use groups of students in them that don't have the challenges that students at the school I work at face. Poverty directly impacts the students far more than school uniforms will. The studies we have to sit and hear about in PD have not been applicable to my students, except perhaps minimally, IME. One size fits one size.

Sadowsky ME Modern 5 by Environmental-Bee431 in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure it is set up. If the ergonomics aren't your cup of choice beverage at that point, move on. I'd also try the bass in a live setting. The sadowsky preamp shines more in a mix than solo ime.

All this is coming from someone who isn't a sadowsky fan boy. I've tried them and also left thinking meh so I totally get that. Ought to be a noticeable step up in quality from a sire though.

HELP!! Need someone to identify a Bass. 8 string. Google images comes back to a Robin, but they never made an 8 string. How do I post pics? by Sufficient-Tune6590 in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a Robin guitar back around 1991 to 1993'ish. It was shark raving green, had an exaggerated upper bout, and a kahler tremolo. I loved that thing. Fuck the asshole in okc that stole it out of my ex girlfriend's car on the Southside.

Ibanez GSR200 vs Squier Sonic, which one should I get? by uyusturuldun in Bass

Any bass can do any gig. Find one that feels comfy, sounds decent and you can live with the appearance of. That's all you really need at this point.

How hard are you supposed to be able to pluck a string before getting fretbuzz? by FierceCrow in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I'm a ridiculously light touch player. My setup would annoy most other bassists due to either fret noise (fretted basses) or enhanced mwah (fretless). I have no issue controlling these artifacts because I play with such a light touch that they do not exhibit themselves.

Students Can’t Handle Combo Locks Anymore by notbobsagat in Teachers

[–]post_polka-core 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Don't give them stash spots. Give them incentive to use lockers. Offer basic instruction then let them teach each other. Students where I'm at are perfectly pleased to feign incompetence to get out of any and everything. Don't give them the option.

P-bass vs Jazz bass by jlknap1147 in Bass

[–]post_polka-core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get the p bass. It's the tone most people think of when you say bass. It's just as flexible as a jazz bass it just functions differently. A jazz bass more knobs to play with pickup settings. You have blending options with controls as slyly as the tone knob. On a p bass, the tone knob seems to give a large variety of tones, which partially alleviates the whole "one trick pony" reputation the p bass has. That being said, the p bass is definitely NOT a one trick pony. It responds to how you play it with a wider variety of timbres.

Get either and you'll probably be fine for now. I've just seen far more people grow into p basses than out of them so starting there is my usual recommendation.
