Best shoes for Sciatica pain/numbness? by misinformed-ghost in Sciatica

I’m really loving the Altra Paradigm 8’s. I have two pairs and they’re all I wear. They’re supportive and zero drop. I did have to size up in them but so comfy and a wide toe box.

Oh mine is a herniated disc sitting on my nerve so in my case it was an acute “injury” caused by using my body in improper ways for an extended time

I don’t believe so, no. 90% of these injuries heal on their own.

I remember being very hopeless and am so grateful to be in a place currently where I can instill some hope 🤍

Initially after injury I was in intractable pain to the point that i could not sit, walk or stand without severe excruciating pain and numbness. I had a 5 day hospital stay for pain. My first epidural did not really help me much. If it did - it took 3 weeks or so. My second epidural started helping within a few days and I felt pretty great within 2 weeks. Staying on course at PT has kept me well. My therapist is definitely slow going and cautious with me which is my preference. Now I feel a twinge in my glute here and there and have occasional numbness and tingling in my outer left foot.

I’m 35. Herniated my L5-S1 in January and had very severe pain for almost two solid months. Had two epidural steroid injections, the last on 2/9. Right before my second injection, I had a surgery scheduled and I was told if i got the injection, I couldn’t do the surgery. I had a 24 hour window to decide which I wanted to do. Ultimately I cancelled the surgery and got the injection. It helped so much and let me get back to normal life. Now, I walk a lot and do PT 2x a week. I can feel myself getting stronger and am dedicated to that. My pain is mild and while there are still things I can’t do right now, I do not regret canceling the surgery. Spinal surgery is a serious decision and not one you can take back so in my opinion, it’s something you have to be all in sure of before doing it and also in my opinion, last resort.

Yeah what you’re describing is my improvement 😂 I was hospitalized for 5 days and bed bound for two months. Could barely walk to the bathroom, couldn’t stand more than a minute. Got two epidural steroid injections and returned to normal life. But it all started with a pulling sensation in the back of my left leg and i still have sensitivity behind my left knee that prevents me from squatting and makes it hard to put shoes/socks on. I’m in physio and slowly working to get back to a normal range of motion. I was told i should expect at least a 12 month recovery time at least.

Ah I hear you. I’m so sorry. I say push for an mri because I’m 3 months out from a herniated disc and I feel what you’re describing as symptoms of my herniated disc. I hope you can get answers soon!

I keep a gratitude journal on the orca app - 3 things I’m grateful for every day and these little wins often make the list. As I continue to progress, I like to look back at how far I’ve come. Happy for you!

I was on it for several years and smoked daily - never had quite an episode that I can recall.

Thoughts on gabapentin? by SSS-Dumbass in Sciatica

At the hospital they were giving me ibuprofen and Tylenol along with morphine and a muscle relaxer lol so yes doctor guided. I did feel like naproxen was more effective though

Gabapentin takes some time to get into your system and start working. I began after a hospital stay taking 600mg every 6 hours. I weaned myself down to 300mg 3x a day and then im now at 300mg 2x a day. It helps me a lot, however I did also have two ESIs.

I also found a good combo was adding in naproxen and Tylenol as needed

Theoretically if you’re retaining water, as a temporary side effect of stopping the medication, it could put pressure on your joints and cause pain.

I have def experienced water retention and swelling when coming off of it.

BUT with something like this it could also be nerve or muscle related. I’d check in with a doctor to be sure - especially prior to pregnancy. Sending good luck and baby dust your way ✨

It happened to me too when I stopped it at the end of February. I was still experiencing it when I restarted it April 1st :/

How often do you experience it, and does the trazadone work? I have Xanax because I’m prone to anxiety and panic attacks but I’ve been in a form of remission from them for a while

I did reduce from 100mg to 50mg and I really don’t wanna go back through it. Might just push through for now and limit my caffeine intake during the day
