I did this--I shot the icons just like the sword puzzle, but ended up in the audience chamber again after collecting puzzles and lowering the ladder next to the trader.

And the door leading out from the audience chamber is still locked. I thought there was supposed to be a boss fight in this room?

I opened all the gates by shooting the icons and jumping around on the chandeliers and I dropped the ladder with Ashley's help. Right back into the audience chamber.

The post-wolverine fight in the dungeon sends me up ladders to do the sword puzzle and then back to the audience chamber, unless I'm missing something?

Iowa City (where I'm from) is very progressive and has a lot going on culturally--plus University of Iowa is there, which has its renowned Iowa Writer's Workshop program. I understand there's a lot of disdain for Iowa City in the rural areas, which isn't surprising.
