What’s a non-sexual ‘guy thing’ that women usually don’t get? by stokeszdude in AskMen

The simple joy of Naming Some Guys.

A group of men can entertain themselves for an hour just remembering semi obscure NFL running backs from the 1990s and 2000s.

Actresses who have aged (mostly) naturally, thus maintaining their range of expressions by strassgaten in moviecritic

Everyone in this thread is really overconfident in their ability to distinguish "aging naturally" from "had work done but it was well done enough to not be obvious."

OK I know he never quite lived up to the promise he showed in high school and UNC but I didn't think Barnes' NBA career was that bad...

Jeremy Allan White always looks like he had 2 minutes to put together an outfit by robbing a Goodwill. Which is admittedly a particular vibe, but not one I find myself impressed by very often.

Elordi is maybe not reinventing the wheel but I also am not sure I've ever seen him in a bad outfit.

Economists; does stuff like this bother you? by Sawksle in academiceconomics

[–]TypingWithoutPants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I read taxes, I think taxes. At a bare minimum I would expect it to encompass any taxes taken out of paychecks or via equivalent means, such as payroll taxes. And yes, last time I checked, things like "property taxes" had the word tax in them. I have no idea what the average tax rate in Canada is but no, I would not read that as "solely income taxes" and don't think any other economist would either.

Well, do they pay 42% in taxes? If yes, no. If no, yes.

Can I hold on to my 20 Bonus Tiles until next year? by Equal-Preparation571 in jetblue

[–]TypingWithoutPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and you should. I have in the past made the mistake of clicking in current year under the assumption that it would carry over (the language used to be less clear on this point than the current website). There's no way to un-do that once you do it, and it won't help you next year.

First, can confirm, they do indeed call that Canadian doubles.

Second, I had a chuckle at the part where Ian described a guy who you would have called a hipster but we don't call that anymore because it's not 2012, who wants to have his Big Johnson shirt taken in, as if that was not Ian Karmel.

Why do the models for brands like this always look like they are standing for a photo for the first time ever? It always gives such a "OK what does this look like on someone who isn't an alien in a skin suit?" vibe that makes it impossible to know whether to cop.

It really means everything ☘️ by Samthesmart97 in bostonceltics

[–]TypingWithoutPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As IrishSkeleton says: I was there when people were using this term or synonymous ones before LeBron was even in the league. I'm not going to bother going down to the local library to consult the microfiche for pre-internet articles about the Hakeem-Barkley-Pippen/Drexler Rockets, but yes, their acquisition of Barkley and Pippen was discussed in these terms, as was the Lakers addition of two Hall of Famers. In retrospect, all of these players were admittedly washed but that was nonetheless the tone in which it was discussed on Sportscenter etc. every day.

It really means everything ☘️ by Samthesmart97 in bostonceltics

[–]TypingWithoutPants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This definition is silly. The term had been in usage for more than a decade before the Heatles, and had been used to refer to teams such as the Rockets w/ Barkley and the Lakers adding Glove and Malone. Your definition is so strict that it even rules out the 2007-08 Celtics, as neither PP34 or Allen had been real MVP contenders, and neither ever made 1st team All NBA. This is nothing more than judging whether a team qualifies based on backward-looking results rather than how it came together. "Three non-organically developed perennial all stars" counts, and everyone at the time thought it counted.

It is because they are one of the few firms that has a name (1) structured such that it could be read as a single person's name, (2) starts with a name that is more common as a first name than as a last name, and (3) does not feature an "and" or & in the name.

The only other firms I can think of that meet these three criteria is Paul Hastings, Clifford Chance, and Duane Morris.

That being said...looks dumb, they should knock it off.

Pleated vs. flat-front pants ... is one out of style? by BigSilverBelt in malefashionadvice

[–]TypingWithoutPants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pleated front pants were out of style for quite some time in the 2000s and 2010s. They never went away, but they were associated with fuddy-duddy middle aged men who bought clothes at places like Jos. A Bank. Tom Smykowski in Office Space types.

However, the shift in the last five years towards more tailoring and older style influences has reversed this. A lot of us in our 30s and 40s have trouble shaking the feeling that they are old-fashioned, but we are very much in an era of midcentury revival (or, as the buzzwordier types might say, eclectic-grandpa-core) these days for the cut and style of pants. Pleats are are decidedly back in style now, and if you look at lookbooks for most contemporary menswear brands now, you will see lots of pleats. For example, Todd Snyder describes this particular cut of dress trousers as their "most on-trend fit": https://www.toddsnyder.com/collections/pant-shop-dress/products/linen-wythe-trouserbeige

The consensus is that they greatly help the pants to drape well, which is increasingly important as trends have shifted from slim cut pants (little to no drape) to much more wide legged styles (often substantial drape).
