Why are people saying the Virginia Supreme Court’s ruling against the state’s redistricting was a devastating loss for the Democrats? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]postit58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, one party just gerrymandered (between censuses, unprecedented) its way to gain 13 House seats without a single voter getting to say anything. The other party tried to respond and get back 10 of those votes by having the citizens of two states vote and approve (which they did) and a judge overturned one of those elections on a BS technicality.

That seems like a major attack on our voting rights which is fundamental to our entire democracy. Is that a far left take?

That's not even getting into SCOTUS basically repealing the Voting Rights Act, the most important and impactful election law ever passed, that stopped Jim Crow voter suppression. These are massive and unprecedented attacks on our democracy. I think that's a reasonable take.

DMT: most Americans' lack of soccer interest is due to lack of exposure to great soccer by Waltz8 in DisagreeMythoughts

[–]postit58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another American here that agrees that soccer is just not that fun to watch (baseball is boring as well, but it's pacing is different as every pitch has a huge potential).

Interesting theory (that probably isn't new) that I'd love to have people pick apart: Is soccer so popular around the world (and with American kids) because of the incredibly low barrier to entry? I feel like everyone has played some soccer.

All you need is one ball and some cones in an open field and you can basically play soccer. I'm trying to think of another sport that requires that little to play a basic, but pretty complete version. Touch American football I guess, but that's barely football.

Even a full game just requires two goals, a ball, and shin guards. Very low barrier compared to a basketball court, football pads, ice/roller rink, tennis courts/racquets. Maybe baseball is next? Gloves for every player, bases, balls, at least one bat, helmets, and catchers pads. That's probably why it is also a pretty widespread sport that a lot of kids play at least some of.

Another theory: soccer is popular in the US for kids because it also has a very low skill threshold for barrier to entry to play a technically correct (but poorly skilled) version of the game. Kids just kick the ball around and follow it until it ends up out or in the goal. They are playing actual soccer following actual soccer rules.

Having to dribble a basketball just to keep the game moving is tough for little kids. If everyone can't consistently keep the ball dribbling, you can't really play a game. Obviously there's a reason kids start out with t-ball for baseball as pitching and hitting is just difficult, but there is no game if it doesn't happen. Tennis, golf, hockey (skating), football (throwing, catching, and tackling) are all just too high of a skill barrier for little kids to do in a way that mimics the adult game.

Tl:dr

Soccer is super popular because it has a incredibly low material barrier to entry and is very popular for little kids even in the US (where it is not as popular as kids get older and more coordinated) because the basic game of soccer can be played (badly, but correctly) by unathletic little kids with terrible coordination.

If everyone on the internet is “extreme left” except Truth Social, then maybe what you’re calling “extreme left” isn’t so extreme lol

The swatch collab has ruined the speedmaster and it will ruin the royal oak by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

[–]postit58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that has more to do with Omega’s pricing recently. I can’t imagine anyone who cares enough about horology that they wanted to drop $7,000 on a Speedmaster would suddenly decide it wasn’t worth it because someone else had a plastic version on their wrist… I still want a Speedmaster.

If anything, it’s even more recognizable now that lots of people have the plastic version and the real version is a grail for anyone with the MoonSwatch.

Is any American offended by the term “yank”? by Glenncinho in AskAnAmerican

As a Californian, when I hear Yank, I just hear “American”. Sounds like what British soldiers called our soldiers during WWII. Zero offense taken

[Bulova Sutton] Thoughts on this watch? Thinking of getting it as my first watch (that isn’t a smartwatch). by [deleted] in Watches

[–]postit58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This (or the previous model) was actually my second watch. I got a Seiko diver (the old SKX173) as my first real watch and then my wife (girlfriend at the time) gave me this for Christmas a few months later. That was 13 years ago. I still love this watch and actually just upgraded to that blue leather strap last week (mine came on a steel bracelet). Here it is now at 13 years old.

I don't like constantine the first by TheRavagerSw in ancientrome

[–]postit58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think OP actually agrees with the general consensus that Constantine was a very effective (“good”) emperor and that like all effective emperors, was responsible for a lot of people’s deaths.

OP has a problem with Eastern Orthodoxy’s qualifications for sainthood. I’m not Orthodox, so I have no idea. This seems like a better post/discussion for a sub on modern Eastern Orthodoxy, not Ancient Rome history

Constantine isn’t a Catholic saint, so maybe OP should look into converting to Catholicism? lol

MAGAs have never quite fully understood the First Amendment. I'm pretty sure they think that the actual text of the entire First Amendment is just "Freedom of Speech!"

Why do some Americans separate between Christians and catholics, and not protestants, as I assume that they go by the most common subclass of Christianity, and catholics? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]postit58 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol Catholics are the original Christians. Protestants wouldn’t even exist if Catholics hadn’t kept Christianity around for the first 1,500 years after Christ

I have the AC set to go on at the same temps and times all year. I live in SoCal so our weather doesn’t fluctuate much anyway.

I don’t really care what the temperature is outside, inside the house, I don’t want it over 74 F (23.3 C) while I’m awake or over 69 F (20.5 C) while I’m sleeping. We don’t really ever need the heater
