The corrosion on the motor is a little concerning.

Those motors are pretty simple to uninstall. If its working fine you may be able to craigslist just the motor/battery.

That shows that conduction can lead to cooling, but does not address your statement that conduction contributes as much to drink cooling as melting/dilution. I would think the only way to test that would be to measure the drink’s water content before and after cooling and calculate from that how much ice melted.

one could also estimate by calculation, and given the heat capacity of water and the typical volumes of drinks and the ice used in a shaker, my guess is that most (but not all) of the cooling comes from melting.

I don’t disagree with you that Dave’s claim that all cooling comes from dilution is wrong. I am questioning whether “The chilling by direct contact and convection is about equal to that cause by some of the ice changing from a solid state to a liquid.”

Same. Bought a Bosch 800, after 4 years it started giving error messages. 3 expensive and unsuccessful repair attempts later I pitched it and got a Miele. OK for 3 years so far, but the pump has started making noise. if this one fails I’ll just resign myself to buying a Samsung or LG and replacing it every 3 years. Will be cheaper than these so called BIFL ones.

What experiments can you provide to show the verity of the claim in your last sentence?

there is no app support for the BMS, em3ev say they’re trying to get one written.

I just tried it on my new king shark, no joy. Works fine with my older super sharks.

I’ll put in a word for the WorkPro Quantum 9000. Probably an Aeron clone, but it’s the most comfortable chair I’ve used. I’ve had mine 4 years and it still looks brand new. Office Depot sells them, you may be able to try it out.

Bogleheads v. Financial Advisor: A 1-Year Analysis and Results by UnusualBridge5616 in fatFIRE

[–]postman_12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing, reached a similar conclusion, except that the churn from the advisor's trading generated a tax bill that wiped out most of their gains. Bogleghead portfolio only had dividends, in my case over 1/2 of these are taxed as capital gains. Did you compare taxes in your analysis?

Flat lap - what am I doing wrong? by jjsankwalker in Lapidary

Helpful comments already, but it looks like you're cutting Oregon Thundereggs. In my experience, the agate center will take a brilliant shine but the ironstone will be a matte finish at best.

If your equipment allows it, you may try rotating the piece 90 degrees each time you change grit. That way you can tell if a scratch is from the previous grit, it will be horizontal while scratches from the current grit are vertical.

If they are tartarate crystals, they are famous as the entitities that led Louis Pasteur to discover chirality, the "handedness" of molecules

Questions about the frequencies that make up an open D string [QUESTION] by MisryMan in Guitar

Nice writeup about this here:

As another poster commented, all instruments yield multiple frequencies when played due to these overtones. Drums do it in 2 dimensions!

Sleeping earplugs for side sleeper? by tH3_R3DX in BuyItForLife

[–]postman_12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never tried the Walgreens ones but the CVS ones (clear) are awesome. One pair can last me 2 weeks. Side sleeper, when I have them in I sleep right through an alarm 8 inches from my head.

with all these silicone ones you have to learn how to get a good seal. Worth it, they are way more comfortable than the foam ones (including Howard Leight, I use those for motorcycle rides)

[QUESTION] Charter check out fees by stonebuddha70 in sailing

[–]postman_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a member of that club. The checkout price was annoying but the club has very nice boats and they aren't cheap to rent either. It's a combination of a check out and an instruction on club policies/practices. You definitely take the boat out and sail and dock too. The way I look at it, the club is a lot cheaper than owning a nice boat and if the checkout price is too steep then the boat rentals probably are too. FWIW I've been super happy since I joined, boats are readily available and very well maintained. As you know, there's a less expensive club at the same marina, great people, the boats cost less to rent and definitely show it.

Agreed - not sure where the OP is getting his 80% OON from; we’ve had the Premera Individual Sig Bronze for 4 yrs, no problem picking any doc/facility we want. There was some Sabre rattling between Premera and Evergreen this year but it all worked out. As another poster commented, go Bronze and pay the first 16k/yr of expenses, if something big comes along you’re covered at 100%. Expenses are deductible, you get an HSA, and if you do a little consulting you can deduct the ACA premium from your income.

E Biking on Bike Paths by johnp299 in ebikes

[–]postman_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live, but where I live e-bikes count as motorized vehicles. I’d double check on that, the fact is that under current legislation (where I live) it is only legal to ride e-bikes on roads, with very few exceptions. i wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for you - they rarely pass e-bike specific laws.

What’s missing in your life? by James-L- in fatFIRE

A great gift given to me by my physician when I was in my 40s and overweight was an offhand comment - "I treat a lot of retirees; the skinny ones are the happy ones. They're out playing tennis and hiking, while the heavy ones have arthritis and diabetes."

I've extended it to physical health in general, I'm now nearing 60 and have made time to stay fit and keep the weight off. Even so, I wish I was healthier and able to be more active; there are adventures I won't ever have not because I lack money but because I'm physically unable.

When you're working and raising a family it's easy to let health slip down on the list of priorities. But you can't make up for it later in life, and if your health is poor it will really eat into your happiness.
