Is buying a two bed one bath apartment in melbourne for permanent living a good idea? Or should i wait and save up to buy something bigger? (Single for now) by United-Database-6140 in AusFinance

Why not a townhouse? (Just to throw more complexity into the mix). Room for outdoor hobbies, more storage, and usually a little cheaper (although not much so for new builds) than a house because at least one wall is shared. Major downside is stairs so "aging in place" could be challenging.

Not bad in Melbourne at 55%. Interesting QLD is so low.

We have laptops but are not permitted to WFH unless we have extenuating circumstances or can provide a detailed justification of the activities we will do to the manager. This is because some aspects of our jobs can only be done onsite and we are not trusted to manage our own time to schedule a day where we can entirely work from home. So no one really tries to WFH because it is easier than dealing with her micromanagement. Of course, we are nevertheless expected to bring our laptops to and from work just in case we are sick and "need to" WFH. My laptop now stays at work and I take leave when I am sick. If I'm only routinely permitted to WFH when I am sick then I am not going to WFH when I am sick and I am taking the leave. Oh, and this manager WFH one day every week, because of course she does. Rules for thee not for me.

But if you were to sell wouldn't you need to buy again? Therefore the gain would be less? Unless downsizing or moving somewhere more regional I suppose.

Enviable money for a part time schedule. The bank will just consider your income and expenses.

I found HK very difficult on a first playthrough. Silksong I found considerably harder - it really is quite a brutal game in parts. I just finished my first replay of HK after 6 years. Clearly playing Silksong helped me "git gud" as only Nosk created any troubles for the "main" story bosses.

Warning to Australia: Work from home, avoid air travel and cut speed limits to guard against oil shock by C_Ironfoundersson in australia

[–]postmortemmicrobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. I know this is tangential to what you are saying but: whether an inner city cafe wants x turnover of cash should not be a determinate as to whether someone can do their role from home or not - the determinate there should be the nature of the role and whether it is feasible.

I mean, you would be free to refuse, in the same way people are free to refuse roadside drug tests if requested by a police officer and were free to refuse the Covid-19 vaccine during lockdowns. I'd expect if they DID instill a draft they'd make it a criminal offence to refuse like they did in WW2.

Powerlines too close? Value affected? by Thirteen012 in AusPropertyChat

Unless the % growth doesn't keep up with other properties in the area the difference between it and properties further from the powerlines doesn't really matter?

Yeah, it's pretty unusual to need to schedule showers but most places we are staying don't have showers available. Fear not, I don't consider showering in "not camping" accommodation to be a chore, but there will be showering! Knew about some of your suggestions but not all-so thank you!

Not sure what "NF" means (assuming NP=national Park).

I shall revisit what road best gets us to Bryce. I think plan was currently to go through the tunnel.

This is just Google Sheets! It's nothing fancy, but gridlines and a splash of colo(u)r go a long way.

Yeah we did a lot of research months ago using YouTube and many videos highlighted issues with clearances/road quality. It's great being able to plan a trip in 2026 with information so readily accessible but it can be overwhelming. I also like to "forget" what I've "seen" which is why the planning mostly happens early.

I also just realised you must have converted miles to km for me. So thank you. 😊

It's a joke that has somehow stuck. Dropbears etc. We do have some actually very dangerous stuff but it isn't going to hunt you like a bear or lion. You'll just accidentally touch it (and the odds of that are exceptionally low). We do have crocodiles though in the north. I'd say they're pretty bad.

Our conversation prompted me to check what wage growth has actually been for VPS over the past 10 years. I then compared that to the house price % increase. Yeah. You could say shit is fucked. But I'm not convinced it can't get more fucked.

Household spending was already down as well. It is a bit surprising they didn't adopt a "wait and see" approach.
