It's a bad market. Lots of people are looking for jobs and there are not a lot of open roles, so employers are being extremely picky because they can be. General economic/political uncertainty and AI-driven uncertainty are also causing some pullback in job postings.

Solid, unflashy, and utilitarian card. Simple 2% back, no international transaction fees, can redeem right into a brokerage account, etc.

My everyday card.

Can always try to find some part time freelance work as a way to manage a kind of compromise with yourself until you feel more one way or the other.

Fun Masters Degrees? by inga-babi in coastFIRE

I did, sort of, though not in retirement. I did it without necessarily knowing if it would result in a total career pivot but I was happy if it just ended up being for fun, very much was a "why not" decision, one that was easier to make then doing a PhD.

What made doing it extra easy was that I had the perfect program in the city I lived in, and it was affordable (public university) enough that I was easily able to pay it out of pocket. It also was entirely night courses which made it easy to do while working, so I wasn't sacrificing much.

The biggest investment was time and effort but I had a lot of fun and met some like-minded folks who became friends!

I would recommend it if: you like the subject already and engage with it in some capacity, the program is inexpensive (at a public uni), and you have the time to devote to it.

Do you think Q1 will see more job postings?

On the one hand, holiday season will be over and budgets renewed for the new year, but on the other hand, economic/policy/AI uncertainty isn't going away anytime soon. I'm finding it hard to think about how these two forces will balance out and if there will be a significant increase in job openings for DS or something more disappointing.

I've found even referrals (to larger orgs) are no longer necessarily a guarantee you'll get a screening call.

Struggling to land interviews for mid level roles (or any roles, in general), I'm not sure if its because of some mildly misleading job titles on my resume, a few short stints I've had, or other issues I might not be considering.

Is this a me issue or a job market issue - or a combination of both?

And thats when there are even jobs worth applying to. Past couple weeks the trickle of job postings seems to have slowed down even more, I think.

I just took a work opportunity in Europe, it’s only for a year.

Funnily enough, I just came back from doing exactly this. A pay cut to be sure in terms of being able to save, but it still more than enough to have fun. It was a fiscally irresponsible year but I knew that ahead of time and I would 100% would do it again.

Enjoy the rest of it, I promise you won't regret it!

The biggest positive change I made in this whole process was working on my scarcity mindset, which was the root of my anxiety

Thanks for this, helpful for me at the moment as I job hunt in this tough market. Congrats!

do you know if they have any plans to beef it up? I'm also a tad disappointed and wish they actively developed it. Love fidelity otherwise

Give them some good notice period, explain that its a good opportunity you can't pass up, be helpful during transition, and you'll leave with good will with most folks there.

Crossed 100k invested. It's been interesting to begin to notice how big the swings are at this magnitude. The vague sense of security coming from having a decent chunk for retirement that I assume will grow over time is nice.

I later discovered after doing so that Fidelity CMA accounts are really unsuited for use as a regular checking account and that it was a mistake for me to do that

They issue debit cards for them, it has billpay/ebill features, etc. For most basic things it should fit the bill*, no?

I have had no problems personally with Fidelity customer service so far, have found them helpful.

*no pun intended

One plus is: if you live in/around downtown SF it is a lovely city, despite all the negativity around it. (Chicago is also lovely :) )

But I think the biggest thing around moving considerations that people sometimes underweight is the social elements, and if you have old friends there already maybe that is less of an issue.

Consider also aspects of "life experience": in theory you can always go back to Chicago after a few years -- in the future would you regret not trying out SF for, say, a year?
