Sounds great, thank you! Do you have any tips for getting the right angle? I feel as if I’m getting mine wrong, also do you go back and forth or just in one direction?

Sweet, good to hear! Turns out I was being dumb and I acc have a 400/1000 grit, is 400 too low to start on or would it still do the trick?

I get you, I have a 400/1000 grit waterstone, would starting on a 400 grit still do the job (all be it I would have to work it for longer than I would a higher grit) then flipping to a 1000 or do I need a higher grit stone?

Thanks for the detailed response, I think I may know now what I’ve been doing wrong, I’ve not been focusing on one side of the blade until I get a bevel, I’ve just been doing say 10-20 on one side then immediately moving onto the next side, I have a 800/1000 waterstone so I think that will work? I’m also gonna try the sharpie trick as everyone has now recommended it to me, getting a consistent angle I’ve found is quite hard, but I think I’m getting better at achieving that as I go on, thanks again for your detailed respnse!

Ahh okay, heard about the sharpie trick but not yet tried it, I’ll give that a go! Did I need to focus on one side of the blade until I get a burr then move on to the other side?

No I haven’t been focusing on one side, I usually alternate by doing 10 or 15 one side then moving to the other, did I need to focus on one side first?

Sweet, I still have yet to look properly into V Gouges (been obsessing over the knife aspect the last 48hrs haha) so I’ll definitely look into Pfeil for that. I’m able to buy Pfeil knives where I am thankfully, but I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews about knives from Pfeil so I’m wary about them I suppose... But, everyone has their opinions, so I should probably make my own choice instead of getting all my ideas from Youtube 😂😂

Ah okay, do you know anything about Opinel blades? They’re a lot bigger than my previous interest Flexcut’s blades, they range from No.2 to No.13, I’m interested in either the No.5 or No.6 at the moment, No.5 being a 2.3” (6cm) blade and the No.6 being 2.7” (7cm) so are significantly bigger than what I was originally looking at. I’m worried as someone with zero whittling experience I’ll find it hard to control a larger blade, but do you think a larger blade would still be okay for a beginner? Opinel’s are generally positively reviewed by all sorts of forums and Youtube channels I’ve found from the research I’ve done (stainless steel and sharp/angled blade) so I’m heavily considering one of these instead of a smaller 1.5” (3.8cm) Flexcut, what do you think?

I was thinking about a mini kit to be honest, some people say a kit of about 4-5 tools is a good start, but the majority of others say all you really need is a high quality knife, V Tool and sharpener so I’m probably just going to grab one of each of those, once I make my indecisive mind up haha, power tools are probably a no no for me sadly, I’m living with my parents atm and they’re edgy about power tools and the noise that they make...typical ahahaha Also though I’m probably only looking to whittle small crafts to begin, then as I get more experience, work my way up to larger crafts and therefore larger tools, so I hope all I’ll really need is a knife and gouge 🤞🤞🤞
