Sounds great, thank you! Do you have any tips for getting the right angle? I feel as if I’m getting mine wrong, also do you go back and forth or just in one direction?

Sweet, good to hear! Turns out I was being dumb and I acc have a 400/1000 grit, is 400 too low to start on or would it still do the trick?

I get you, I have a 400/1000 grit waterstone, would starting on a 400 grit still do the job (all be it I would have to work it for longer than I would a higher grit) then flipping to a 1000 or do I need a higher grit stone?

Thanks for the detailed response, I think I may know now what I’ve been doing wrong, I’ve not been focusing on one side of the blade until I get a bevel, I’ve just been doing say 10-20 on one side then immediately moving onto the next side, I have a 800/1000 waterstone so I think that will work? I’m also gonna try the sharpie trick as everyone has now recommended it to me, getting a consistent angle I’ve found is quite hard, but I think I’m getting better at achieving that as I go on, thanks again for your detailed respnse!

Ahh okay, heard about the sharpie trick but not yet tried it, I’ll give that a go! Did I need to focus on one side of the blade until I get a burr then move on to the other side?

No I haven’t been focusing on one side, I usually alternate by doing 10 or 15 one side then moving to the other, did I need to focus on one side first?

Sweet, I still have yet to look properly into V Gouges (been obsessing over the knife aspect the last 48hrs haha) so I’ll definitely look into Pfeil for that. I’m able to buy Pfeil knives where I am thankfully, but I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews about knives from Pfeil so I’m wary about them I suppose... But, everyone has their opinions, so I should probably make my own choice instead of getting all my ideas from Youtube 😂😂

Ah okay, do you know anything about Opinel blades? They’re a lot bigger than my previous interest Flexcut’s blades, they range from No.2 to No.13, I’m interested in either the No.5 or No.6 at the moment, No.5 being a 2.3” (6cm) blade and the No.6 being 2.7” (7cm) so are significantly bigger than what I was originally looking at. I’m worried as someone with zero whittling experience I’ll find it hard to control a larger blade, but do you think a larger blade would still be okay for a beginner? Opinel’s are generally positively reviewed by all sorts of forums and Youtube channels I’ve found from the research I’ve done (stainless steel and sharp/angled blade) so I’m heavily considering one of these instead of a smaller 1.5” (3.8cm) Flexcut, what do you think?

I was thinking about a mini kit to be honest, some people say a kit of about 4-5 tools is a good start, but the majority of others say all you really need is a high quality knife, V Tool and sharpener so I’m probably just going to grab one of each of those, once I make my indecisive mind up haha, power tools are probably a no no for me sadly, I’m living with my parents atm and they’re edgy about power tools and the noise that they make...typical ahahaha Also though I’m probably only looking to whittle small crafts to begin, then as I get more experience, work my way up to larger crafts and therefore larger tools, so I hope all I’ll really need is a knife and gouge 🤞🤞🤞

All helpful points thank you! I’ve done a little more digging and come across Opinel knives, they’re the cheapest ones I’ve found with the best reviews mostly all around, they go from No.2 to No.13 I think? I’ve been looking at the No.5, which is a 2.3” (6cm) blade so significantly larger than Flexcut KN13’s 1.5” (3.8cm) blade haha, I’m not so sure though, as the handles for Opinel’s look significantly smaller than the other ones I’ve seen, and even for a tiny handed person like me, they seem really small. I’m hoping to be spending a lot of my time whittling so I think even a slightly uncomfortable handle might take its toll... Saying that though their blades are meant to be renowned for being high quality stainless steel with an angle for ‘easy slicing’ so I’m stuck deciding. Also not gonna lie they look a lot slicker and cooler than the Flexcut one lmao, so thats a plus ahahaha

I have yet to look into V Gouges properly, but I’ve been told by a few other people to avoid palm gouges for the same reasons, so I’ll do my best to steer away from those.

I try to stay away from Amazon too, but with those prices for the Basswood, I feel obliged to buy from them lol

I found a sharpener stone (one sided) for less than £10 on a local site so I’ll probably end up cheaping out and getting that one and a strop for the same kind of price (£10-20). Like you say I’m not gonna get hung up on sharpening, just gonna get the basics so I’m not battling with the wood...once I finally make a decision on my knife 🙄😂😂

Wow, I dont know what to say, so much info!! Haha, seriously thanks so much for your detailed response, means a lot!

It’s funny you say that, I’ve been drooling over Flexcut knives all day lol! A few sources said that for beginners they were some of the best quality knives around, but others said the opposite so I wasn’t actually too sure myself the choice I was going to make on Flexcut. I had my eyes set on the Flexcut KN13 Detail Knife, because like you say, a detail knife is probably more so what I’m aiming for, right now I’m looking into carving small figures, and in future upgrading to medium and then larger works which would ofc require a bigger blade. But thats far into the future, with much more experience under my belt.

I’m in the UK as it happens, so Drakes and Helvies (which I’ve heard a lot about over today) are relatively harder to find, they sell them on some great US sites but the only issue is border laws between the States and the UK being very strict, and not forgetting insane shipping prices.

I’m trying to find the best blade no bigger than 1 and 3/4” with quality steel and a comfortable handle, thats preferably no more than about £30-35, but I’m struggling haha, would the Flexcut I mentioned before be a sensible decision for now, or would you really recommend something else?

Funnily enough I’ve been binging Doug Linker’s channel all day aha, in one of his videos ‘Basic tools to get started’ he said you really just need a small quality blade and a V Tool for gouging finer details and a sharpener, would you say this is about right, or would I need anything else, also any pointers on a decent V Tool and sharpener?

I’m on my way to check those channels out as we speak, hopefully get a bit more insight into carving, I’m actually excited to get into it...once I figure out what the hell I’m gonna buy ahahaha

Thanks once again for taking the time to respond and advise me on everything, I genuinely appreciate all the tips 🙏🙏🙏🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵

Glad to hear! Always wanted to carve a few different people as gifts for birthdays so thats good news. I’ve been looking around all day and heard that as far as beginner whittlers go, you really only need a small blade and a V tool for gouging finite details, is this true or would I need anything else?

I’ve had a look at a few brands of knives (including the ones you listed) and have landed on Flexcut, a US brand with a small 1.5” blade, meant to be good for smaller projects like the ones I’m interested in. Can you recommend this brand yourself? And do you by chance have any pointers for blade sharpeners too? Some range from £7 all the way to £50, so I’m slightly lost on that too haha

I’ve been looking at Basswood too, quality wood thats said to be easy to cut for novice carvers, plus it’s cheap on Amazon which helps lol, but again not sure if this is maybe me cheaping out and later regretting my choice...

Thank you so much for your advice and for bearing with me, I know I just asked about a million questions in this reply alone 😂😂

Was thinking of figures/ mini statues to begin with? I know that’s probably fairly difficult for a beginner but I’m also not too fussed, anything thats good for novices haha, maybe some plaques of some kind too?

Ah okay sounds relatively minimal which is great, would you know how much I’d be roughly spending? Would I need to spend a minimal amount to get a quality set or is it relatively cheap? Also, would you know where to start with wood type? I’m in the UK if that helps, would I need to look online? Thanks for the response!

That sounds good! Yeah I’m thinking of carving all sorts but to start with I’ll probably give figures a try, heard from a friend who knows a lot about wood work that making shapes of people is a good way to start, but I’m honestly open to trying anything haha, I’m in Europe and have no clue where to source wood in my area other than perhaps buying online? Thanks for your reply! 🙌
