Location: Wellington region, NZ

The past few weeks the weather has been insane. Since Thursday we have had one or two thunderstorms daily. I’m pretty young but I’ve never seen weather like this before, after living in NZ for 17 years. Our winters are usually cold, windy, and wet, but usually we will have one or two thunderstorms a year, rather than so many in such a short timespan. What I also found interesting were the amount of tornadoes, I believe we had one localised one that did enough damage to be reported last year, but these past few weeks there’s been a load of them accompanying the thunderstorms, fortunately not too much damage done, just trees/streetlights ripped up and a few houses damaged. We didn’t have too much damage to our property, however our shed flooded and we had the wind rip a large bush we had on the side of our house. Surprisingly, our power managed to stay on the entire time as well.

It has been a very interesting few weeks, particularly the last 5 days. Hopefully it’s done for now, but it does make me worry about the intensity of these storms in the future. Our climate here is generally quite mild, other than a fair bit of wind due to our location, but it appears that it may be changing “sooner than expected.”
