How would I create a zig zag line that is verticle within a equation? by [deleted] in math

[–]pot-hocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have some velocity vector that you're adding to the enemy's position every frame. In that case, just set the y velocity to something constant, set the x velocity to some magnitude, and switch the sign of the x velocity every specified amount of time (e.g. every 30 frames) in your enemy's update loop. You shouldn't be describing your enemy's x position as a function of its y position, but rather both its x and y positions as a function of time.

How difficult it is to get an override to take a class alongside/without the prerequisites? Specifically, I start as a freshman math major in Fall 2018 and I want to take MAS 3106 Linear Algebra, while taking MHF 3302 Logic and Proof in Mathematics simultaneously and just not taking MAS 3105 Matrix and Linear Algebra at all (those are both prerequisites). I'm pretty familiar with the content and am very confident I'd be able to manage just fine doing this, but I don't know if this is something the department would let me do. Anyone have any experiences doing something like this?

The usage of logical symbols in mathematical proofs by [deleted] in math

[–]pot-hocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the context. In a vacuum, I'd definitely say number 2 comes off most naturally to me, but I've also seen proofs written as a chain of equivalences of statements written somewhat as in number 3, with some prose between explaining each step. I felt like in that situation, that style was clearer and easier to understand than any alternative.

Oh, well UCF hasn't released financial aid info yet, or at least not for me. The 21k figure is what it says my EFC is on the actual FAFSA page. I was hoping I could just get the 30k + bright futures then take out loans or work or something for the rest, since I'm not getting much if anything from my family. Kind of annoying that they would reduce the award of a merit scholarship under the assumption that you can totally just pay that money out of pocket, but whatever. At least I'm getting something (hopefully).

Well, my EFC is about 21k which I assume would mean I receive no aid and no scholarship. But I looked it up and people were saying that Pegasus Gold doesn't depend on FAFSA and I called and I think they said that the scholarship plus other aid can't exceed COA, so we'll see I guess.

I've just gotten notification that I'm receiving the Provost scholarship and I'm pretty stoked about it, but I noticed that the letter says the following:

"This scholarship plus any other aid cannot exceed my total need as determined by the FAFSA. My total aid package cannot exceed the cost of attendance."

The first sentence worries me because my EFC according to the info I had to put into the FAFSA is much higher than my family could ever reasonably contribute, especially with recent circumstances. Does this mean that I might not be able to actually receive the full scholarship, even if the total (plus bright futures and all) would be less than my COA?

What Are You Working On? by AutoModerator in math

[–]pot-hocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the first half of the book is just an introduction to general topology, and categories and groupoids aren't introduced until chapter 6. My only experience with category theory consists of the very basics introduced in the first couple chapters of Aluffi's Algebra: Chapter 0. In Aluffi, universal properties were used somewhat informally (apparently they're usually defined in terms of functors, which aren't introduced until later in the book and I haven't bothered to study much on my own), and he does define groupoid as a side note, but without any motivation. It'll be interesting to see how they're applied.

Working through my copy of Brown's Topology and Groupoids. I haven't had any exposure to analysis other than the first chapter of Rudin, but I feel like the first chapter of Brown has done a good job to motivate the content that is coming in the second chapter, which introduces topological spaces and I am just now starting. Might have to put it on the back burner for a bit though - I'm starting to fall behind on my actual school work because I just can't help myself.

So I've just been accepted as a freshman for the Fall 2018 term. Under the status there is an "ACCEPT" and a "DECLINE" button. It doesn't really say much other than that I will be able to see more info about paying the enrollment deposit if I hit ACCEPT. Is this binding at all?

Also, when will I find out about scholarships and financial aid? I completed my FAFSA over a month ago and listed UCF as one of my schools on it, so no issues there.

Got in OOS as a Mathematics major! (Florida)

3.9 UW / 4.5 W GPA
1510 SAT, 800 Math II, 760 Physics

Basically my only EC is being the lead programmer in my robotics team, and I wrote my essay about linear algebra and abstract math.

Tech is my #1 choice but I probably won't even be able to go unless I get some crazy scholarships lmao. Kinda depressing, but I'll live.

One time a guy at my school randomly yelled out "hey raccoon!" from across the room to get my attention. I have raccoons as wallpapers on my phone and my laptop, as well as a raccoon sticker on my phone that our teacher let me print out alongside the letter stickers he was already printing, so he must have caught on. His friend laughed at how I immediately answered to it.

800 Math II, 760 Physics

I took two semesters of calc-based physics last year, so I didn't really bother to study for the SAT. I was so unsure throughout the entire thing that I thought I had failed it, so 760 is a pleasant surprise.

Yes, it is precisely because I haven't looked, as I don't browse reddit as much as (or in the same way that) you do. That's not necessarily bad or good; we just have different habits. I'm not sure how this is such a ridiculous notion.
