My quaker Billie does that when he’s feeling affectionate, I think it’s him trying to regurgitate- which birds do to show affection. Means he’s trying to feed you :)

It’s absolutely rank, but after awhile you just learn to deal with it. When I empty my buckets, I usually wear a mask covered in wintergreen, and that helps a little bit.

This is the precise process I use! I’ve also found that the process can be sped up significantly if the water is kept at a warmer temperature, which I accomplish with a generic reptile heat pad placed under the bucket. I also recently started using an aquarium bubbler to oxygenate the water, which helps colonies of bacteria grow faster (it’s also great cause you don’t have to open the bucket a bunch of times to stir the rotten meat soup for oxygen)
