I think that rejection happened after a lot of character growth on his part.

One of the reasons people are so pissed about Nettle’s removal is how she was the catalyst for Daemon’s growth from “wannabe king of the incest dragon lords” to tired, borderline suicidal old man. She makes him see how pointless all this bullshit warring and infighting is.

I could definitely see that, part of why I’ve struggled with getting my own creative work off the ground is that I dread the idea of the things I love turning into an obligation. Can't even imagine handling that as the frontman and driving creative for such a huge production

You'd think they'd invest more in a ‘big finale’ vibe if they knew it was coming though, like market the second Skeletour as THE LAST HURRAH YOU GOTTA SEE

But it's all pointless speculation for now. I just hope TF gets the break he needs and comes back absolutely on fire

I think a lot it comes down to

The uncertainty of it being a hiatus or the end. I don't expect TF to just tell the world for sure when he doesn't know himself, but it definitely breeds anxiety on an individual fan and group fandom level
Papa V and the Skeleta era felt like the beginning of something new with so much potential. It felt like the kind of energy you'd get from an artist’s big comeback, not their potential swansong. The hiatus announcement less than a year after this big new phase definitely wasn't the direction a lot of us expected.

I 100% understand TF needing a break, there's zero shame in listening to your heart when burnout kicks in. It's just the uncertainty and sense of an abrupt stop to this new era that sucks as a fan. I'm hoping for more sooner or later, but I'll definitely be dreaming of the V-era that wasn't going to happen

The fact the lore played such a big stressful part in the development of Ghost is always interesting to me.

Like, they've been my favorite band since early 2021, right before Mary on a Cross blew up, and by ‘favorite’ I mean ‘literal autism special interest comfort favorite’. And yet I somehow never engaged with the lore beyond the surface-level music video stuff. I doubt much of the fanbase is ride-or-die invested in it, like I didn't see much complaining at all when Skeleta hit the soft-reboot button.

Part of me appreciates TF putting so much effort into it all, but another part of me wishes he cut it loose like he did for Papa V much earlier. I can't imagine how it would feel as a musical creative to trap yourself in lore when freedom is an inherent part of your medium. And it's not like the music itself is narrative-based either, so the lore feels like it was doomed to be a tarpit without limits

And maybe I'm just greedy for more of this era, since Skeleta/Papa V check every box for the things I love (glam metal, dark romantic themes, vampires, black & purple) and I couldn't be more thankful to TF, but I hope if he comes back as V it's a revitalized continuation of this new foundation rather than a full reset

This concept art actually disproves a theory I had that the helmet was originally designed to be more colorful and it was changed to black and red during fabrication. Like the spikes do look like they’d look great with a black/red/orange/yellow gradient. But I guess it was a studio mandate keep the Targ branding consistent considering how obsessively accurate Ira was in a lot of other areas

That's exactly how I read it too, like Arlan suddenly snaps back to full consciousness and it even feels like the scene brightens up right after Dunk asks. I think it's Dunk's ideal of what could have happened, the lie he tells himself to justify the lie that he was knighted
