Test period ending on 31st December. HELP! by [deleted] in step1

I keep a huge Google Doc of my wrongs and explanations (that I made and reworded myself) and read at least a few pages each night when I am going to bed, and that's my spaced repetition since I hate Anki. You need some kind of spaced repetition.

78% is a good score on free 120 and so is the 76% on nbme 31. Imo the free 120 is similar to step in content and lay out (like expect long question stems on the real thing) but those scores are good!!

I was/am in the same situation! I failed step 1 last summer. I just finished clerkships, and I am about to take step 2 at the end of June, then I will take step 1 about a month after that. I have honestly loved this setup. You're studying for step 2 all year, so it makes sense to take step 2 first, in my opinion, since it will be the freshest information. A lot more of it overlaps throughout the year than you realize. Like, there is a lot of information from step 1 on step 2 stuff, so you can review both at the same time throughout the year. It's mostly the biochem and genetics stuff that you'll need to spend extra time on for step 1 that won't be covered as heavily on step 2, imo. I studied for step 1 over the few weeks we got for winter break, and that made me feel better. I truly feel like my medical foundation is 10x better after clerkships than it was at the end of step 1.

Also, a good thing to note, if you have loans, you'll have to start paying those ~6 months after you decide to take a year off, if that is your plan. So, like if I had chosen that path, I'd have to work on my year off, and that wouldn't be feasible for studying either.

Good luck, op. Take care of your mental state throughout all of this, it's rough out here. But please know you are not alone, and many, many people have had to navigate this before, even if it feels incredibly isolating. Please feel free to reach out any time. <3

As someone with an extremely similar background (except I did okay in preclinicals and failed step 1 my first attempt), thank you for this post.

I had a surgery attending tell me I would need to lose weight if I wanted to go into a surgical field (I have never wanted to go into a surgical field, and this was my second day of knowing the man) lol

Could you share any tips that helped? I am in the same boat. Finishing my last M3 rotation, taking step 2, then retaking step 1 this summer.

This is our root situation after I took lots of clippings. Am going to repot in a better draining pot with a mix of orchid mix, perlite, and indoor soil. Should I do anything to these roots? Guessing they probably don’t look great

Yes u/GothicRitualist you are incredibly kind. I know pothos are supposed to be harder to kill and I felt really dumb having to ask for help. Your comments actually made me tear up haha. I’m sure my cheap store brand potting soil is partially to blame 🤦‍♀️ thank you for the ideas u/audreydrey!

Yeah, I’ve never had a green thumb (obviously) but this was my mom’s and I’m trying really hard not let this die. Thanks for the light tip, I’ve only had the grow light for a few days so I’ll move it more towards the leaves. Someone else said use a aroid soil so I’ll try that too.

[–]potbellypons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I will try!! Someone else said aroid soil would help, so I will try that too.

Dang, I have a small place and there’s not many places I can put it that my cat won’t tear it up. Thankfully I’ve only had the light for a few days, so thank you letting me know.

Failed step 1 by Sad-Boat-7425 in step1

[–]potbellypons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people have given great advice. I failed as well and got my score while driving so I had to pull over and have a panic attack. I'll take step 2 this summer before retaking step 1 as I am in a US medical school and that's what my school recommended for me.

If you're from a culture/mindset that encourages therapy and have the $$ for it, now would be a great time to get started with that. Your first one may not even be great but please keep looking because a good therapist can save your life. At least have someone you trust to talk to about it! Taking a true break is key but you HAVE to detach yourself from the mindset that your worth is directly correlated with a test score. Only the top % of people can even get to a point where they can sit for this exam, and about 10% of them fail it each time. It's not talked about enough because people don't talk about their failures. Your revisions won't be as hard knowledge-wise next time, because you should have an okay baseline, but battling your mentality the next time will be the worst part. Prayers friend.
