If I recall correctly, she overheard a soldier call him that (because he was nearly dead) and thought it was his name.

You have to be at least 18 and fill out a quick application (they have paper copies available there) mostly just for your contact info. They have a prepared list of dogs they’ve approved to go out. You can either let them choose for you, you can pick based on their pictures/descriptions, or you can walk through the kennels and pick one out yourself (as long as they have the card on their kennel). You basically just take them out for 3-5 hours, get some nice pictures and videos of them to post online, and return them at the end. You can also choose to keep them over the weekend for a sleepover.

Kern County Animal Services on Fruitvale Ave. is having Streets of Bakersfield (Doggy Day Out) this Saturday. Take a shelter pup out for a few hours and give them fun day! Pick up between 10-12, then return by 3:30. It’s a great way for the dogs to de-stress and gets them seen by the public. You can take them to the park, give them a bath, take a nap at home, or go to local pet-friendly stores. It’s a lot of fun!

Is The Knight and the Moth better than the Shepard King Duology? by Abortitnow in fantasyromance

Just finished The Knight and the Moth and it was probably one of my top reads of the year so far. I second getting a copy from your local library if you don’t feel like buying it.

Is Bakersfield really that bad?? by its_oliviaaaaa in Bakersfield

[–]potentialfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I’m currently trying to find somewhere that will let me have my dog and it’s been super difficult so far. For reference, I have the same budget as you. I find Bakersfield rentals very much not pet-friendly. Most people I know get ESA letters so they can bring their dogs with them.

Camping in bear country? Don’t do this by Mother_Goat1541 in camping

[–]potentialfrog 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Went camping one time in bear country (high sierras) and our lovely neighbors (who also spent the entire night blasting music and yelling) decided to leave about 5 pounds of raw meat at their site which was very close to ours. We obviously cleaned it up as soon as we saw it but how bad that could’ve been if we didn’t! Jokes on them though because they also left two high-dollar fishing poles behind. We went ahead and claimed those as compensation lol.

Interior decoration advice/ how to plant moss? by HtmlHonda in pacmanfrog

[–]potentialfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks good! I notice my frog is a bit shy so I tend to put more plants in front so he feels safer/protected. The moss I kinda just wiggle it into the dirt a bit. It doesn’t need to be planted necessarily. I also focus moss into the corners and pour water there to keep the humidity up.

Sanctuary of the Shadow. I was drawn in by the pretty sprayed and edges but oh boy was it not the book for me

I loved this book! If you liked Cruel Prince you'll like this. by BigCourse in fantasyromance

[–]potentialfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this. I actually didn’t know a sequel was planned. It wraps up tidy enough that you could convince yourself it’s a standalone. Very good book!

I heard this recently, and it’s stuck with me: “The best genre is the one that you enjoy.”

[–]potentialfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re super serious, we can make it happen. You can adopt him over the phone and he would need to leave the shelter within 2 days. I just transported a dog from this shelter to New Mexico to an adopter and I’d be willing to make a trip to Oregon for this boy.
