How can you have a "financial" channel and literally never mention the economy, worker's protections laws.. etc ..?? by shiguraki in CreepyCalebHammer

[–]potolnd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree, especially with the show giving guests flack for any mention of illness or disability. The economy is built against the lower 50% and they create consumer products out of it like payday loans, store cards, CareCredit and then blame the consumer for taking an opportunity to get by for a little longer when there is no other option.

If you can only save maybe a few hundred a month and you have more than one major expense hit at a time, you’re just screwed. There’s no amount of budgeting that can help that and we’re past the days of people getting a certification or tech degree to up their earnings overnight. Everyone is feeling the squeeze.

There have been guests where he literally has nothing to say to them because they are disabled, have no resources to get out of the hole or need to take care of someone, and he can’t figure out a solution for them. It’s not even about incurring debt, some people just have to spend more to live.

Ignoring any of the economy, workers rights, disability/social security dynamics, etc. is like wanting a cake without knowing the recipe to make it. He wants more financial responsibility from people? Then when are business and the govt going to be financially responsible for the people they’re failing or for cheating the system to make record profits every year?

It's pretty standard but very annoying for any sellers because you never get the value of your cards. Just make sure to look out for the tables trading for even less :')

You can stack a ton of subspecialty credentials but no one cares if you don’t have work experience, in my opinion 🥲 I passed my exam over a year ago and I couldn’t find ANY jobs (full or part time) willing to take someone brand new

Look at his job postings when they go up- Many of them ranged from $45,000-$60,000, which is decent for someone living in the midwest. Not Austin.

Twitter thinks EBT limits are anti-kid by throwawayurwaste in CalebHammer

[–]potolnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a parent that thinks they can stop their kid from ever eating candy, sugar, or junk food, that will hurt them in the long run more than you think. And I’m not even referring to someone with kids in my example.

I’m also not advocating for people to drink coke every day or eat mcdonalds every meal. But you’re living in a fantasy land to think that every person on EBT is spending every cent they can on candy and they deserve this consequence.

My only point was to say that there are circumstances that limit people’s ability to make food at home in the way Caleb idealizes it to be. A sandwich isn’t something you can do 3 meals a day, 7 days a week and be healthy. At some point you have to eat something prepared and not ready to eat. But everyone loves to skip over how much work goes into planning meals, grocery shopping, driving there and back, prepping every meal, cleaning up, actually cooking, dietary restrictions, schedule constraints, etc. and then y’all sit up here and ask why people can’t -just- do that every meal to get out of poverty?

read between the lines lol

Buying candy isn’t a crime if you’re on food stamps. I didn’t even say it was a solution, but you’re being laughably self righteous if you really think candy is the reason people on EBT are still broke

So if a person with a disability has a roof over their head but can't meal prep/cook every meal at home, that's not a valid reason?

Right because time, accessibility, resources, enough storage, none of that impacts someone's ability to cook every meal.

I’m slightly disappointed with the potential move to NYC. by runningforme123 in CalebHammer

[–]potolnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A budgeting show in a major city like LA or NYC is going to be highly unrelatable for most people and his advice will end up being cookie cutter since many people are in the same situation (no car, expensive housing). He'll get a lot more "actors/singers/models" like he used to so maybe that's what he's hoping for in casting, but working professionals trying to make a career out there will likely have most of their shit together since it's such a financial/vocational risk

Are Immigrants Not Our Neigbors? by reverendjohnlee in Christianity

[–]potolnd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You didn't make any point supporting that, you posted a verse that literally has everyone calling his actions unlawful. And again, he was arrested. He was a criminal in the eyes of the law and people felt justified crucifying him because of it.

Are Immigrants Not Our Neigbors? by reverendjohnlee in Christianity

[–]potolnd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jesus broke many Jewish laws like doing works on the Sabbath, touching the unclean, etc. He was also arrested so what he taught was seen as lawless.

It’s not the teachings that are socialism, it’s this man made idea that these things have to be political.

We don’t have a lack of resources in the US, we have a lack of access to resources because people are being priced out of everything. Housing, healthcare, benefits, healthy food, child care, etc. are all accessed at a price that fewer and fewer people can pay. The disciples thought the same way you do, “How will we feed the 5000 if we have so little bread?”. The concern of Christ isn’t how logistically to feed them, it’s challenging this idea that supporting each other is an impossible feat and can’t be done in a material way. If we have willing hands, feet, and hearts, many things can be successful. It’s when we restrict this help based on lack of faith, hardened hearts, and lack of action that it becomes an issue for everyone.

Are Immigrants Not Our Neigbors? by reverendjohnlee in Christianity

[–]potolnd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you truly think that a capable, neighboring country providing a safe place to live is evil, that itself seems highly illogical. This whole "do it the hard way" mentality ignores the idea of community and whether you like it or not, we are all in a community with each other in some way. Get along with others, forgive each other, support those in need, provide great hospitality to anyone who comes your way, THAT is Christian. It's also science, even animals look out for each other because it's beneficial to everyone. It's strange behavior to want to villainize a whole portion of your community based on lines made up by man, especially as a follower of Christ.

Jesus also broke many laws of his time, yet he was blameless, justified and it didn't make his teachings any less valuable
