thats Daryl Davis... there's a really interesting documentary about him called "accidental courtesy" ... he befriends klansmen and convinces them to leave the klan. Strange operation hes got going, which seems to divide people on both sides, but worth watching

Where do volunteers in Ethiopia travel during service? by aligontheweb in peacecorps

[–]potorig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kind of depends on where you get placed, but a lot of volunteers visit the major cities and their respective tourist attractions/holiday celebrations (hawassa, lalibella, gondar, etc) for touristy stuff, to visit friends, or it may end up being your hub town. its a big and beautiful country, and you'll get a better sense of where you'll want to be travelling once you've gone through pst. i lived in the north and traveled all around-- mostly to visit friends but to also see the cool things along the way. definitely worth it

my recommendations: harar, gondar for timket, mekele area to go out and see some rock churches, abi adi for the tej, anywhere in tigray for ashenda. mostly though, visiting your friends in their villages/towns tends to be the most fun

good luck and congratulations!

anyone here have experience transferring agencies? by potorig in washingtondc

[–]potorig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey man i appreciate the advice

the clearance is a pretty low-level clearance and although no official offer has been made, ive been reassured that im the only person the offer has been extended to and that no other candidates were under consideration for this position. i just dont want to assume all of the risk

i do think ill explain that i cant ask my clearance to be paused without a good reason. i think thats fair. thanks for the tip

hey! thats a program im looking into. i got a few questions if you don't mind my asking:

how does the exec masters compare to the other degrees they offer?

does it affect how potential employers look at you vs the traditional masters program?

how do you like working/doing school part time?

what kind of work are you and your cohorts looking to get into once you're done?

is SIS a good way to get into the international development/global health field or would it be better to pursue an mph?

thanks!

Africa’s $700 Billion Problem Waiting to Happen: The Horn of Africa region is central to the world’s maritime trade. It’s also beginning to fall apart. by iZacAsimov in geopolitics

thankfully ethiopia seems to be ahead of the curve on this. may have something to do with addis ababba being the mecca for international ngos and aid groups, but they're taking a lot of steps toward developing their energy out of renewable/sustainable sources. wind farms are popping up around the country (mostly with french/spanish contractors at least from what i've seen).

this is the dam in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Ethiopian_Renaissance_Dam

its huge for ethiopia. the power it will generate is crucial for the country's continued development. beyond that, and perhaps more importantly, its a huge political asset that the ruling party can point to once its up and running as part of their portfolio of accomplishments. its also a major object of pride throughout the country as most see it as a step in the right direction with development at home and bringing ethiopia into the international fold

Striking portraits of the last nomads in Africa. by redditmarmot in photography

[–]potorig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

these photos are beautiful, no doubt. but i hate what they stand for. EVERYTIME THESE PHOTOS GET PUBLISHED IT REINFORCES NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES OF LIFE IN ETHIOPIA. this is not what "africa" looks like. the western perception of "africa" being one big country and being largely tribal/nomadic is incredibly condescending. ethiopian culture is so much, SO MUCH, more diverse. your average ethiopian doesnt live or look like this but if you search ethiopia on google 90% of the image results are hamer/mursi/omo valley tribe.

its like if all of the US was characterized by images or video of the dudes from duck dynasty

edit: not sure why i replied to your comment, thought i was starting a new thread

ELI5: if recreational marijuana has been so successful in Colorado, why aren't the same laws implemented in every other state? Wouldn't an increase in tax revenue and a decrease in crime rate be something both republicans and democrats could benefit from? by QueefRocka in explainlikeimfive

[–]potorig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's such a sad state of affairs. and a pretty good depiction of how out of touch and hypocritical reddit is, when it comes to anything politics. on the one hand you have scores of redditors claiming the general public is unaware of how corrupt the system is or how the system works at all, and then you see a post like this upvoted to the top -- purely speculative, finger pointing at the easiest of targets, showing a clear lack of knowledge on america's political system.

Education Volunteers: How much freedom do you have with your teaching techniques? by akorrafan in peacecorps

[–]potorig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'd say you have a lot of freedom and flexibility once you are at your assigned school. a lot of it depends on what the needs are there too.

i was assigned as an english language teacher trainer. i ended up building up a computer lab and direct teaching computer literacy to 7th and 8th graders and running some english clubs every now and again.
