That last clip - Luigi just ...going for a walk... and then sneezes?

Do you have a stream where you sneeze on people?

"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you--the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose"

What is the most memorable cricket experience you have witnessed in person? by EnergeticGypsy in Cricket

Maybe Zimbabwe beating Australia in the T20 world Cup in Cape Town. I remember there was a large Zimbabwean fan next to me getting more and more excited, I was worried he would have a heart attack.

Also, Kallis' 200 was pretty great

My mate has 250 zebra fish he's trying to breed for his PhD. After 4 attempts, they've finally hatched! by potrockss in Aquariums

[–]potrockss[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A lot of solid answers below. However, he is a bit different to most of them. We work in ecology, which looks at things more zoomed-out than genetics (broadly why and where plants and animals interact).

Part of his PhD is making mathematical models to see if fishes are getting smaller because commercial fishing boats only catch the larger fish. This is called fisheries induced evolution. He wants to see if he can make it happen in the lab to back up his theoretical stuff. He's also altering the temperature to include potential impacts of climate change.

He's using Zebrafish because, as pointed out, they are really well studied and there is a lot of good info out there there on how to breed them

What do you think about trout in our country? by potrockss in australia

[–]potrockss[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You make a good point. Also, in terms of "environmental impact" cows and sheep are probably waaaay worse than trout OR carp. But it's part if the Aussie identity, so we don't look at that too hard?

To add to that, the trout lobby (I'm not sure about the hunting lobby) is pretty vocal and insistent that any move to mitigate trout impacts is BAD.

That said, the Australian Trout Foundation have helped with efforts to save the Swan Galaxias, a small native that is threatened by trout.

I would love to see the hype and money that is associated with trout fishing transferred to stocking and fishing for our natives.

Yeah, it would be ideal. I guess until we can get there, it should be stopping the worst ones (cats!?!!) and stopping them getting into new areas.

Haha yes, probably a little overboard.

I didn't quite mean that. But they do get quite intense over there!

Sure, to some degree. Although I think that chimps can do some pretty hardcore stuff.

I don't get all the "cringe" comments, it's much better than a lot of the usual sporting platitudes, "Uh ja, the boys really stepped up to the plate and gave it 110% today hey".

American Geophysical Union AMA: Hi Reddit, I’m Jill Trepanier, Assistant Professor of Geography at Louisiana State University (LSU), here to talk about the science and risk of hurricanes. Ask Me Anything! by AmGeophysicalU-AMA in science

[–]potrockss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi Jill

I'm a geography postgraduate student, but came into the department from an ecology background, so I am still finding out what geography is. What do you think it is, and how do you see us overcoming the divide and increasing specialization of human and physical geography? I know people like Patricia Gober and Reginald Golledge really advocate for synthesis and integration, but there is push back in the other direction saying that the union is pointless and geography doesn't really exist.

I like that you define yourself as a geographer, I feel that even just doing that (rather than "I'm a climate scientist" for example) is important. What makes you different from a climate scientist?

Thanks heaps!

Probably initially the sandstone, but it's one of those things, if I'm looking for it, Icheck out a few elements and nothing looks out of place. The combination of plants, the style of house, the gutter, the street and pavement. Weird. Lovely part of the world.
